Two candidates, GOP Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio, have already launched campaigns. He’s not the first GOP speaker to think so. But in this political climate, any Republican speaker who has to rely on Democratic votes is critically weakened and probably can’t last long. But the only way a Republican speaker will be able to pass aide to Ukraine will be to do so with Democratic help. The lack of such flexibility has been a fatal flaw of GOP speakers for years.

But far from ejecting Biden from office, McCarthy himself was gone in less than a month of launching that inquiry. The House vote to oust Kevin McCarthy from his post on Tuesday marked a historic first, as a group of conservatives sided with Democrats to successfully boot him from the speakership. Immediately following the vote to oust McCarthy, a temporary speaker – Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – took over based upon a list of succession that the former speaker submitted in January. In his first move in the temporary role, McHenry recessed the chamber to “discuss the path forward,” before lawmakers returned to their districts for the week. Matt Gaetz formally sought to remove the House speaker on Monday evening, filing a motion to vacate that would force Kevin McCarthy from his post in what will be a historic clash within the chamber’s Republican caucus in the days to come. “It is becoming increasingly clear who the speaker of the House already works for, and it’s not the Republican conference,” the Florida Republican said. And though it only takes one lawmaker to bring up a vote to vacate the speaker, it would require a majority of voting lawmakers to succeed. McCarthy has the support of most of his members for remaining speaker, but his conference has been riddled with infighting. If just a handful of those members joined with all Democrats, McCarthy would indeed be imperiled.
