Criticisms of small caps abound, though Hartman doesn't see any of them as valid reasons to ignore the group entirely. But to Hartman, those perceived flaws can actually be sound reasons to invest in small caps. "In the small-cap and micro-cap market, there's a lot of volatility," Hartman said in a recent interview with Insider. The small-cap fund also seemingly has no limit on the number of stocks it can hold. Investors can play the industrials sector with commercial aerospace stocks, Hartman said.

Scott Gessler, a former Colorado secretary of state representing Trump in the case, opposed it. He said a protective order was unnecessary because threats and intimidation already are prohibited by law. The issue is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court, which has never ruled on the insurrection provision in section three of the 14th Amendment. A parallel case in Minnesota filed by another well-financed liberal group is scheduled to be heard by that state's supreme court on Nov. 2. Value investing can be challenging, humbling, and even lonely, as fund manager Sam Peters has learned over the last three decades. Markets are usually efficient, Peters acknowledged, meaning that stocks usually trade near their fair value. Thanks to this method, Peters' portfolio often has an unconventional combination of companies that offers diversification with the potential to compound abnormally large returns over time. Peters added: "I think we're going to be in a higher nominal rate environment, higher inflation environment, higher rate environment. Such a setup would favor value stocks over their growth peers, Peters said.

During second-quarter earnings reports in August and September, nearly two dozen retailers said shrink has continued to weigh on profits. During its second quarter earnings call with analysts, the company said shrink was in line with the year-ago period. Over the last few quarters, more and more retailers have called out shrink as a drain on profits and blamed theft for those losses. Others that loosely blame shrink and theft for plummeting profits without providing much more explanation may be trying to obfuscate internal issues, said Lapinsky. Contrary to other retailers, shrink was the largest drag on Ulta's earnings during fiscal 2022, according to a securities filing.

An LA-based tech worker told Insider they stay at their job because it's convenient. The job is convenient because I can work remotely from my home in LA, but otherwise, I'm a "grumpy stayer" because I'm not completely happy with my work situation. HR and the executive team don't like that I'm an advocate and likely see me as grumpy or difficult, but I don't care. Leaving one mediocre job for another feels pointless, and I don't expect better working conditions. I'm a grumpy stayer because the economy is too crazy to return to full-time freelance.

High school football coach Joe Kennedy is back to coaching and praying on the field after a years-long fight. Joe Kennedy strode alone to midfield, knelt, and prayed for about 10 seconds after his Bremerton High School football team beat visiting Mount Douglas Secondary School 27-12 Friday night. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which works to keep government and religion separate, placed a billboard message near the school that read: "Wishing Bremerton High School a safe, secular & successful school year."
