In the Footsteps of Charles III
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( Sarah Lyall | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
No royal heir in British history has waited longer than Charles III, the king formerly known as the Prince of Wales, to ascend the throne. By contrast, Charles — the oldest Prince of Wales in British history to become king — was born a monarch-in-waiting and has had a lifetime to prepare. The public in turn has had a lifetime to get to know Charles, starting from his rarefied childhood in the public eye. But Charles was an unusually outspoken Prince of Wales. He has often waded into debates on unexpected topics like alternative medicine and organic farming (pro) and modernist architecture (against).

A Netflix series spotlighted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Much now rides on the streaming giant’s ability to get something from your kid’s roommate’s brother. First-quarter results from Netflix on Tuesday were a decidedly mixed bag. But Netflix added only 1.75 million new paid subscribers during the quarter, which was 20% below what analysts had expected. It said subscriber growth in the second quarter would be roughly similar to what it just reported—less than half the 4.1 million net new subscribers analysts were expecting for the period.
LONDON, April 12 (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry will attend the Coronation next month of his father King Charles but his wife Meghan will remain in California with the couple's young children. "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th," the palace spokesperson said. "The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet." Asked in one interview in January whether he would attend the coronation if given an invitation, Harry said: "There's a lot that can happen between now and then. Spokespeople for King Charles and Prince William have declined to comment.
CNN —Prince Harry will attend the coronation of King Charles next month, but his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will remain in the United States with the couple’s children, Buckingham Palace said Wednesday following months of speculation. “Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet,” the palace said in a statement. Details of the sibling rivalry between Harry and his brother Prince William were also shared. The palace has not specified which members of the family will appear in the procession and on the balcony.
LONDON, March 27 (Reuters) - The first hearing in a lawsuit brought by Prince Harry, singer Elton John and other high profile figures against the publisher of the Daily Mail newspaper over alleged phone-tapping and other breaches of privacy, is due to begin on Monday. Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday and the Mail Online, has said it "utterly and unambiguously" denies the allegations. It is seeking over four days of hearings this week at London's High Court to have the case thrown out. His wife Meghan also won a privacy case against the publisher in 2021 for printing a letter she had written to her estranged father. Meanwhile, Harry is expected to appear in court in May to give evidence in a libel trial against the Daily Mirror newspaper over accusations of phone-hacking.
These included hacking mobile phone messages, bugging calls, getting private information such as medical records by deception or "blagging", and "commissioning the breaking and entry into private property", their lawyer David Sherborne said. Harry, who flew in from his California home, sat just feet away from reporters, watching intently and taking notes. Elton John, Furnish, Frost and another claimant, Doreen Lawrence, mother of Black teenager Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in a 1993 racist attack, were also in court on Monday. Harry hugged Lawrence at the end of the day's hearing and chatted to her and Furnish, and gave a thumbs up to crowds outside as he left court. REUTERS/Maja Smiejkowska/File PhotoLONDON, March 10 (Reuters) - Britain's King Charles named his younger brother Prince Edward as the new Duke of Edinburgh on Friday, handing him the title last held by their father Prince Philip, Buckingham Palace said in a statement. Edward, 59 on Friday, becomes the latest member of the royal family to be granted a new title since Charles became king in September after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. William, Charles's eldest son and heir to the throne, was named Prince of Wales, while the children of his second son Harry, no longer a working royal, were officially named as prince and princess earlier this week. Edward's new title comes after he took on a number of his father's roles, including at The Duke of Edinburgh Award charity which encourages young people to undertake challenges. Philip had held the title of the Duke of Edinburgh since his marriage to the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 until his death in 2021.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File PhotoLONDON, March 8 (Reuters) - The children of Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan will be known as prince and princess, with the couple publicly using their daughter's royal title for the first time to announce she had been christened. Under royal rules, the monarch's grandchildren can become princes or princesses of the realm, meaning that Harry's children, Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, were eligible to use the titles since his father became king last September. Buckingham Palace said it will update the royal website to reflect Archie and Lilibet's titles in "due course". Meghan said in an interview two years ago that the British royal family refused to make her son Archie a prince and had conversations about how dark his skin might be.
Britain's Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, reacts as she, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Queen Camilla and King Charles attend the state funeral and burial of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, in London, Britain, September 19, 2022. King Charles III's office has been in touch with Prince Harry about the new monarch's coronation, raising the possibility the prince will attend the historic ceremony despite tensions within the royal family. A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, confirmed Sunday that Harry had received "email correspondence'' from the king's office about the coronation. Camilla was once reviled for her long-term affair with Charles, which contributed to the breakdown of his marriage to the late Prince Diana, Harry and William's mother. Harry, meanwhile, continues to share his personal experiences and critique of the royal family as he promotes his book.
LONDON, March 5 (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have received an invitation to his father King Charles's coronation but will not yet confirm publicly whether they will attend, a spokesperson for Harry said on Sunday. His recent high-profile and stinging criticism of his family had led to speculation over whether Harry, who stepped down from royal duties in 2020, would be invited to the coronation and, if he was, whether he would attend. "I can confirm The Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty's office regarding the coronation," a spokesperson for Harry said. "An immediate decision on whether The Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time." Florence’s Pitti Palace Showcases a Real Renaissance Woman

The Italian Renaissance has long been presented as a procession of male power players, from artists like Michelangelo to arts patrons like banker-statesman Lorenzo de’ Medici. But that view is set for a corrective this month, when Florence’s Uffizi Galleries mounts a comprehensive show at Pitti Palace about Eleonora di Toledo (1522–1562), the Florentine duchess who ruled the Tuscan roost for a few decades, overseeing a makeover of the city’s historic core south of the Arno that still shapes it today. Bringing together a host of splendid objects, from cameos to textiles to paintings, Eleonora di Toledo and the Invention of the Medici Court in Florence runs through May 14 in the vast palace, which Eleonora brought into the Medici orbit and then ornamented with the Boboli Gardens park just beyond. Eike Schmidt , the Uffizi director, describes Eleonora as the true “manager of the Medici court.” She acted as a consort and frequent regent for her husband, Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, a descendant of Lorenzo’s.

Both groups are well above the $193 overall average among individuals who will spend money on Valentine's Day.

LONDON, Jan 16 (Reuters) - British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson said he had emailed an apology to Prince Harry and Meghan after he wrote in a national newspaper column that he hoped the Duchess of Sussex would one day be forced to parade naked through the streets. Neither Amazon Prime nor a representative for Clarkson immediately responded to a request for comment. "The language I'd used in my column was disgraceful," Clarkson said on Instagram on Monday, adding he had sent the apology on Christmas morning. Harry and Meghan have made headlines around the world in recent weeks after the couple released a Netflix series, and later Harry's book, in which they accused the British tabloid press of misogyny and racism. Following the widespread public backlash after his column was published, Clarkson has said previously he was "horrified to have caused so much hurt".

Netflix's "Harry and Meghan" is a hit in the US, based on Nielsen numbers. During the week that the second half of the series dropped, half its viewers were 50 or over. Half of the viewers in that week-long period were 50 or over, and a whopping 73% of viewers were women, according to Nielsen. "The Crown," Netflix's dramatized Royals series, also leans older, but even moreso than "Harry and Meghan." When its fifth season debuted in November, Nielsen said that 60% of its viewers were over the age of 50.
“I was twenty the first time I heard the story of what Pa allegedly said to Mummy the day of my birth,” Harry writes. So, too, despite all Harry’s resentment, seems to be his brother. William stays by Harry’s side the night before Harry’s wedding, only leaving to stay the night with Kate and his kids. But on this topic, Harry’ resentment gets the better of him. They’ll read “Spare” and see that, personalities aside, the chief culprit for Harry’s lifelong resentment is the unfortunate law of primogeniture.

At the heart of Harry and Meghan's narrative is that Britain's sensationalist popular press is a "devil" that members of the royal family have colluded with to protect or enhance their own reputations. The royal family have been here before, though. "That said, you could argue it only reinforces the victim narrative from Harry and Meghan in America," the former aide said. "The one thing the royal family has on its side is time. So it can play the long game - which Harry and Meghan maybe can't, in that they have to be telling their story now."
LONDON — Prince Harry will deliver another highly publicized blow to Britain's royal family Sunday, in a pair of TV interviews two days before the publication of his much-anticipated memoir. In conversations with Tom Bradby, a news presenter at British broadcaster ITV, and with Anderson Cooper on CBS' “60 Minutes,” Harry is expected to shed more light on the acrimonious royal split. Timed to coincide with the release of his autobiography, “Spare,” trailers from both interviews show Harry accusing his family of fueling negative news coverage about him and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. In the memoir Harry accuses his brother of physically attacking him during an argument over his marriage to Meghan. The two first outlined their side of the story in their bombshell interview with media mogul Oprah Winfrey, accusing members of the family of racism.
