Half of registered voters plan to vote early this fall, new figures from the September NBC News poll show, with Democrats continuing to run up the score among early voters and Republicans getting stronger backing from those who plan to vote in person on Election Day. It's a smaller lead among a slightly smaller share of the electorate than Harris has over those early voters. The massive political difference of early and Election Day voters is the latest evidence of a dramatic and enduring shift in the Trump years. And with that jump came a massive partisan difference — future President Joe Biden led among early voters by 26 points in the survey, while Trump led with Election Day voters by 29 points. But while the share of voters planning to vote early has dropped between the end of 2020 and now, the major partisan split remains.

An Idaho man has been charged with threatening to kill Donald Trump in phone calls made to the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, according to court documents. Warren Jones Crazybull, 64, of Sandpoint, made at least nine threatening phone calls to Trump’s home on July 31, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit that was first reported Monday by Forbes. Mar-a-Lago security told the Secret Service that eight additional phone calls making threats were received from the same number, the court documents said. "There have been two heinous assassination attempts on President Trump, and their violent rhetoric are directly to blame." The Secret Service determined his location using T-Mobile phone data, which located him in Montana, according to the filing.

The Secret Service is heightening security around former President Donald Trump, an agency official said Monday, following the apparent attempt on his life just two months after an assassination attempt at a campaign rally. “Given recent events, the Secret Service is taking a heightened posture in its protection of the former president,” the official said. The new measures appeared to be visible Monday when Trump got off his plane in Pennsylvania and a Secret Service agent followed closely behind. Federal prosecutors recently charged Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, in connection with an apparent assassination attempt on Trump on Sept. 15. Routh was charged a little more than two months after a gunman in Butler, Pennsylvania, shot Trump in the ear during a campaign rally.

Prosecutors from Smith's office have said that such a filing is necessary because it would address the Supreme Court's concerns about presidential immunity issues in the case while limiting the number of possible appeals. They have asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the election interference case, to allow them to file a 180-page brief on the issue by Thursday. Smith's office declined comment Monday night. If Chutkan allows prosecutors to file their motion, it's unclear how much of it would be made public. In a separate filing over the weekend, Smith's office said "the opening brief and its exhibits contain a substantial amount of Sensitive Material, as defined by the Protective Order" and would require redactions.

But think-tank economists warned Business Insider that former President Donald Trump's proposed mass deportation could open that door right back up. Beyond posing significant humanitarian concerns, economists worry Trump's proposed mass deportation would be hugely inflationary, partly due to the basic calculations of supply and demand. Both he and Edelberg said a sudden mass deportation would upend the labor supply and, in turn, the ability to make goods. McKibbin has researched the impact of mass deportation and said it would lead to a combination of lower production and higher costs, particularly in the agriculture and construction sectors. Add on the uncertainty that mass deportation would bring, and a chilling effect among investors seems plausible.

As Zuckerberg attempts to convince Republicans that he, and his company Meta, are nonpartisan, sources told the New York Times that he's sunk into a political cynicism. Much of the animosity toward Zuckerberg trickles down from the top of the party, beginning with former President Donald Trump himself. Zuckerberg suspended Trump's Facebook account after the events of January 6 and thus ignited the former president's anger.

Routh, allegedly “stalked” Trump in Florida for more than a month, prosecutors told a federal magistrate judge on Monday, with cell phone data allegedly placing Routh at the golf course as well as Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence across several days between August 18 and the day Routh was arrested. Routh was originally charged with two gun-related offenses, including obliteration of a firearm’s serial number and possessing a firearm while a convicted felon, while the investigation continued. Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who oversaw, and later threw out, the federal criminal classified documents case against the former president, was randomly assigned to oversee the case, court documents show. The charges against Routh also include possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer, in addition to the two previous gun charges Routh faced. Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Johnny Mercer Theatre in Savannah, Georgia, on Sept. 24, 2024. If implemented, this proposal would reverse a major component of Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which phased out traditional R&D tax credits. Starting in 2022, businesses were no longer allowed to write off their R&D expenses the same year they incurred them. The former president also said he would appoint a specialized "manufacturing ambassador" if he wins a second term in the White House. Trump also doubled down on his hardline approach to trade, saying he would impose a "100% or 200% tariff" on cars imported from Mexico.

U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt on Tuesday defended the company's planned sale to Japan's Nippon Steel, expressing confidence that the deal will "close on its merits" despite President Joe Biden's vocal opposition. "We strongly believe the deal closes on its merits," Burritt said in an interview on CNBC's "Money Movers." "It strengthens national security, it strengthens economic security and it strengthens job security." CFIUS told Nippon that the sale could "lead to a reduction in domestic steel production capacity," according to a letter obtained by Reuters earlier this month. The committee said supply chains could be disrupted in sectors critical to national security such as transportation, infrastructure, construction and agriculture.

Trump’s promised business tax cuts come alongside his suite of targeted tax relief for individuals, a list that continues to grow. Trump used tariffs, in part, to help boost American manufacturing. Reducing the corporate tax rateTrump has long wanted to reduce the corporate tax rate to below 21%. It will force owners of successful companies to sell their businesses to raise the cash to pay the tax, Trump said. Notably, the tax cut law temporarily created a special deduction for the owners of certain pass-through entities who pay business taxes on their individual tax returns.

Two of Walz’s false claims are related to Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation think tank’s detailed right-wing blueprint for the next Republican administration. Project 2025 has been the subject of multiple false or misleading claims from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign this summer. Project 2025 does not propose to make people register with any federal agency when they get pregnant. Americans are fretting over the job market

Washington CNN —America’s slowing job market is taking a toll on people’s moods. The Conference Board’s latest consumer survey showed that Americans became much more pessimistic about the US economy’s current health and the future of the job market. “September’s decline was the largest since August 2021 and all five components of the Index deteriorated.”The US job market is in decent shape, but it is clearly running at a much slower pace these days than it has in recent years. Peterson said the weaker-than-expected survey results “reflected consumers’ concerns about the labor market and reactions to fewer hours, slower payroll increases, fewer job openings — even if the labor market remains quite healthy, with low unemployment, few layoffs and elevated wages.”The job market’s fate is unclear. Employers might be holding back on hiring for two good reasons: Uncertainty over the upcoming US presidential election and the fate of interest rates, CNN previously reported.

CNN —The FBI on Monday reported that violent crime dropped across the US last year, registering the steepest annual decline in murders in decades. But the report was almost entirely ignored by right-wing media outlets, which have pushed a false narrative that crime is surging under President Joe Biden. Overall crime fell by 3% and property crime fell by 2.4%. The routine release of FBI data comes just weeks before a high-stakes presidential election in which perceptions of crime and safety have become a key political flashpoint. The decision by right-wing media outlets to bury the report underscores the disconnect between public perception on the issue of crime and the reality of falling crime rates.
