The Canadian government alleged on Tuesday that Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a close ally of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was behind the plots to target Sikh separatists on Canadian soil. The Washington Post newspaper first reported that Canadian officials alleged Shah was behind a campaign of violence and intimidation targeting Sikh separatists in Canada. India has called Sikh separatists "terrorists" and threats to its security. Sikh separatists demand an independent homeland known as Khalistan to be carved out of India. The Canadian case is not the only instance of India's alleged targeting of Sikh separatists on foreign soil.

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday baselessly claimed that Pennsylvania is "cheating" at "large scale levels," escalating his spread of election fraud conspiracies in this all-important swing state. The Republican presidential nominee's Truth Social post in the final week of the race dovetailed with a broader GOP effort to sow doubts about Pennsylvania's election integrity. The efforts are similar to what Trump and his allies claimed before the 2020 presidential election. Trump went on to lose Pennsylvania to President Joe Biden by 81,000 votes. As in 2020, Trump's playbook in Pennsylvania involves exaggerating and mischaracterizing any irregularities around the state's election to bolster claims of widespread fraud.

The outcome of this year's presidential election could bode well for different parts of the stock market, according to Evercore ISI. "Trump will be positive for US-only retailers (which have higher tax rates vs retailers with int'l exposure)," Evercore ISI said. Under a Harris win, these stocks could benefit, per Evercore ISI: Evercore ISI forecasts Harris winners to be renewable energy and EV companies, as that administration is expected to maintain the Inflation Reduction Act and other clean energy policies. Discount retailers such as Burlington and Ross Stores are another likely beneficiary of a Democratic win, according to Evercore ISI. A slew of tech companies, namely Apple , Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise , could fare well with a Harris win given the risk of lower tariffs.

CNN —H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a pig in the United States for the first time, the US Department of Agriculture said Wednesday. The USDA and Oregon veterinary officials are investigating bird flu cases in a backyard farming operation that had a mix of poultry and livestock, including pigs, the agency said. After H5N1 was identified in other animals on the farm, five swine were euthanized for testing; two tested negative, and results are still pending for two others. Some previous flu infections in pigs have allowed influenza viruses to change rapidly and develop new capabilities. Across the United States, more than two dozen people have tested positive for H5N1 flu this year, and nearly all of them have reported exposure to infected dairy cows or chickens, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In this case, filaments radiate away from a “zombie star” the explosion created. Then, in 2023, astronomers spied weird filaments glowing with light from sulfur within the nebula. Scientists know the supernova created the filaments, but it’s unclear how or when the structures formed. The robust data that the instrument captured allowed the team to measure the motions of each filament and create a 3D map. The Keck Cosmic Web Imager enabled measurements of the velocity of any material within the nebula that emits light.

Despite a difficult quarter, McDonald’s looks resilient in the face of various pressures, analysts say — something the company shares with U.S. consumers overall. “The spotlight is always on McDonald’s because it’s so big” and something of a “bellwether,” she said. That diary is now believed to be the only known primary source documenting the involvement of Chinese naval officers in the D-Day landings at Normandy. The 24 British-trained Chinese naval officers were forced to choose between the two sides, with many of them going on to have distinguished careers in the Chinese or Taiwanese militaries. Vice President Kamala Harris will make her closing argument to voters Tuesday evening at a Washington rally that is expected to draw as many as 20,000 supporters to the National Mall. Harris will draw contrasts between herself and Trump, and encourage voters to turn the page on the era of American politics that Trump ushered in. In turn, Harris has worked to paint herself as the non-incumbent candidate who represents a new generation of American leadership — though that is a delicate balance given her current role in the Biden administration. Ants will do things like take dead ants out of the colony and into the refuse pile. If we take oleic acid and we put it on a live ant, the other ants will treat it like a dead ant and take it out to the refuse pile. So they’re not really understanding death. The concept of death has often been understood in very cognitively demanding ways — as somehow requiring an understanding of infinity or absence.
