Airbus develops fuel-cell engine for hydrogen plane
  + stars: | 2022-11-30 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Airbus has started developing a fuel-cell engine, it said on Wednesday, sticking with plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft by 2035. The system is one of several options being considered for a potential zero-emission aircaft based on hydrogen, Airbus said. Jet engine makers Rolls-Royce , General Electric , Safran and Pratt & Whitney are among its biggest suppliers. An alternative approach based on combusting liquid hydrogen in more conventional jet engines depends on heavy cooling in larger and heavier tanks. Airbus will start ground and flight testing fuel-cell architecture towards the middle of the decade, the company said during a two-day sustainability event.
Airbus faces growing end-year jet delivery crunch

Airbus has told investors it plans to deliver "around 700" commercial aircraft in 2022. That figure is increasingly under pressure, barring what would be a record and essentially glitch-free performance in the busy month of December, industry sources said on Monday. According to latest available data from aircraft analyst Cirium, Airbus has delivered 536 aircraft so far this year, implying 39 to 41 deliveries so far in November. Between January and October, Airbus delivered 497 planes or a net total of 495 after adjusting for the cancellation of two planes stranded by Western sanctions against Russia. That could intensify the traditional crunch which often sees some planes delivered in the closing hours of the year.
The vintage aircraft in Saturday's deadly collision at a Dallas air show, as expected, lacked flight data recorders, making social media crucial to the investigation, a federal official indicated Sunday. "Neither aircraft was equipped with a flight data recorder or a cockpit data recorder," National Transportation Safety Board member Michael Graham said during a news conference Sunday. Photos and videos of the Wings Over Dallas Airshow collision, which killed all six on board the aircraft, could be “very critical, since we don't have any flight data recorders," he said. LM Otero / APStill, even under the NTSB's wish list for improved crash data, such vintage aircraft were not singled out. A cockpit voice recorder "records the flight crew’s voices, as well as other sounds inside the cockpit," the NTSB website says.

China Development Bank Leasing, ICBC Leasing, CMB Financial Leasing, BOCOM Leasing, CCB Financial Leasing, SPDB Financial Leasing and Jiangsu Financial Leasing on Tuesday signed orders for a combined 300 C919s and 30 ARJ21s at Airshow China in the southern city of Zhuhai, COMAC said in a statement on Wednesday. As with previous announcements, it was not immediately clear how many were firm orders or expressions of interest, and no delivery dates were provided. Before the latest deals, there had been 815 orders for the C919 from 28 customers, according to COMAC's website. COMAC said on Tuesday that China would need 9,284 new aircraft over the next 20 years to meet market demand, 200 more than in its forecast last year. The U.S manufacturer forecast China would need 6,370 single-aisle airplanes to support its growing network of international and domestic routes in that time, while COMAC said that 6,896 such planes would be needed.
China’s zero-COVID policy has hampered its domestic aviation industry and kept international traffic at a tiny fraction of pre-pandemic levels as Western carriers rebound sharply. Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) reported orders from leasing firms for 300 C919s and 30 ARJ21 regional jets. By contrast, the sun was setting in China on Tuesday on one of Europe’s most visible global symbols, the double-decker A380. Tracking website FlightRadar24 said China Southern Airlines operated its last A380 flight from Los Angeles on Tuesday. China is also showing off a FH-97A “Loyal Wingman” drone model designed to coordinate with crewed aircraft, the newspaper reported.

Boeing 's aircraft deliveries in October fell from a month earlier after a fuselage flaw in its bestselling 737 Maxes delayed handovers of new planes. The Virginia-based manufacturer's commercial aircraft unit had told investors that the flaw would impact its delivery numbers for the month. "We'll recover on that quickly," Stan Deal, chief executive of Boeing's commercial airplane unit, said during an investor event last week. The company logged orders for 122 of its 737 Max planes in October from carriers including Alaska Airlines and British Airways' parent International Consolidated Airlines Group.

Goldman Sachs said Boeing can soar more than 80% after its latest quarterly report. "We continue to believe Boeing has substantial deep value upside as financial inputs and valuation both remain at trough while long-term fundamentals are strong. Several inputs are now improving, including aircraft demand, 787 deliveries, services, and total cash flow," wrote analyst Noah Poponak, who has a buy rating on the stock. Still, the aircraft manufacturer generated nearly $3 billion in free cash flow, and said it expects it will reach positive free cash flow this year. Goldman Sachs lowered its 12-month price target to $242 from $265.

Western suppliers are behind some of the key technology in the C919, including the avionics and engines. Two C919 jets arrived in Beijing on Sept. 13, in a move widely viewed as preparation for certification by the aviation regulator on Sept. 19, a symbolic date given the model number. But that did not happen and the two jets remain parked in Beijing, according to flight tracking websites.
X-59: NASA’s ‘quiet’ supersonic plane revealed

CNN —If you’ve heard a sonic boom recently, you probably remember it. Now, NASA is working to change those regulations by transforming the boom into a “thump,” paving the way for a new generation of quieter supersonic aircraft. It’s set to take off for the first time later this year, ahead of its first quiet supersonic flight. “It will be significantly quieter than Concorde or any other supersonic aircraft that exist today,” Craig Nickol, senior adviser at NASA Headquarters, told CNN in 2022. However, it’s doubtful that any of them will be able to take advantage of the findings of the Quesst program, which will likely inform the next generation of supersonic aircraft.

One solution to the problem is autonomous trucks, and several companies are in a race to be the first to launch one. The journey was completed in 14 hours versus the usual 24 with a human driver, mostly because a truck doesn't need to sleep. Its plans are dependent on state legislation, however, because currently some states do not allow for testing of autonomous trucks on public roads. According to Lu, that's still cheaper than paying for a human driver. But you're saving the cost of a human driver, which based on average US wages is about $80,000 to $120,000 per year -- or 80 cents to $1.20 per mile.
