George Frey | ReutersThe Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved Eli Lilly 's blockbuster drug tirzepatide for weight loss, paving the way for even wider use of the treatment in the U.S. The FDA said the approval was based on two of Eli Lilly's late-stage trials on tirzepatide, which evaluated its effects on weight loss after 72 weeks. Higher doses of the drug were associated with even more weight loss, with a 15-milligram dose leading to 22.5% weight loss on average. The bigger issue is that many insurance companies are dropping weight loss drugs from their plans. Preliminary data is already available: A recent late-stage trial found that Novo Nordisk's weight loss drug Wegovy reduced the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke by 20%.

Eli Lilly on Thursday said supply of its blockbuster diabetes drug Mounjaro has improved in the U.S. after months of widespread shortages. During an earnings call Thursday, Eli Lilly executives said the company experienced tight supply for Mounjaro throughout most of the third quarter. But U.S. product shipments of Mounjaro have recently increased, and inventory levels at U.S. drug wholesalers have improved, according to Eli Lilly CFO Anat Ashkenazi. Eli Lilly has also invested more than $3 billion to build two new manufacturing sites in its home state of Indiana. Eli Lilly's main rival in the weight loss drug space, Novo Nordisk , is still navigating its own supply constraints of diabetes drug Ozempic and obesity treatment Wegovy.

A fine against Grand Canyon University is the latest action by the Biden administration that aims to root out misbehavior by institutions connected to the federal student-loan system. The Education Department ordered the Phoenix-based Christian school to pay a fine of $37.7 million, the largest ever of its kind. The school, which has an enrollment of more than 100,000 on-campus and online, will also need to comply with a series of special disclosure requirements for the next few years.

The actress Leah Remini has listed her home in the picturesque Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles — and is doing so at a price cut. Ms. Remini bought the six-bedroom, nine-bath property in 2003 for $3.75 million and first listed it on the market in September 2022 for $12,995,000. Now, she’s slashed half a million dollars off the price for the property, which stretches more than 10,000 square feet on a manicured and gated 1.58-acre lot, asking $12,499,000. The home is in the neighborhood of Fryman Canyon, one of Los Angeles’s most prestigious and star-studded corners. That has allowed forests to become four to seven times more densely wooded than they once were, Safford said. Fire scientists advocate more deliberate burning at low-to-moderate severity to clear vegetation that makes forests susceptible to big fires. Susan Britting, executive director of one of the groups, Sierra Forest Legacy, acknowledged any cutting triggers skepticism because loggers historically took the largest, most marketable trees. But she said thinning trees up to a certain diameter is acceptable, though she prefers prescribed burning. Homeowners are anxious prescribed fires will jump perimeters and destroy houses.

REUTERS/George Frey Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Several people were hospitalised in Austria after using suspected fake versions of the diabetes drug Ozempic, the country's health safety body said, the first report of harm to users in a widening European hunt for counterfeiters. Regional regulator, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), last week warned about pre-filled injection pens falsely labelled as Ozempic, which has seen surging demand for its weight-loss benefits. The maker of the drug, Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO), has flagged a surge in online offers of fake versions of Ozempic as well as its weight-loss drug Wegovy, both based on semaglutide. The BASG did not provide an exact number of people harmed by the fake Ozempic, or say how long-lasting the adverse effects would be on their health. That person likely did not procure the fakes from an official pharmacy, it said, warning that fake injection pens may still be in circulation.

Grand Canyon issues warning about ‘love locks’
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( Lilit Marcus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
CNN —“Love is strong, but our bolt cutters are stronger,” reads a new Facebook post from Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Many people believe that the locks are good luck for a relationship, and that throwing away the key symbolizes an unbroken love. However, while the locks themselves are considered “littering” and “graffiti” in the park, it’s the keys that can cause even more serious problems. When the city of Paris removed the locks in 2015, the weight of the 700,000 metal objects was the equivalent of 20 elephants. Once they were all removed, the city put glass partitions up on the bridge to prevent anyone from adding new locks.

In a three-way race, Gallego is ahead in Noble's polling, with 34% support, compared to 26% for Sinema and 25% for Lake. DETROIT – An ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Detroit automakers had little to no direct effect on General Motors' third-quarter U.S. new vehicle sales. Sales of every one of the Detroit automaker's brands rose compared to a year earlier. Only 25,200 workers, or roughly 17% of UAW members covered by the expired contracts with GM, Ford Motor and Stellantis, are part of the work stoppages. UAW has been gradually increasing the strikes since the work stoppages began, after the sides failed to reach tentative agreements by Sept 14. The targeted walkouts aim to preserve the union's funds and prolong the work stoppages to keep the automakers off keel.

New York CNN —General Motors and Ford are laying off 500 additional workers between them, blaming the expansion of the strike announced by the United Auto Workers union at those companies on Friday. General Motors said it was laying off 164 workers at stamping plants in Parma, Ohio, and Marion, Indiana. Ford said it laid off 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping Plant and Lima Engine Plant following the union’s decision Friday to strike its Chicago Assembly plant, which made the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. It had previously laid off 600 hourly workers at the Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan who were not on strike. Those benefits for both strikers and laid-off UAW members will cost the union about $14.3 million a week, but it went into the strike with $825 million in its strike fund.

U.S. health care providers wrote more than nine million prescriptions for Ozempic, Wegovy and similar diabetes and obesity drugs during the last three months of 2022, according to a new analysis released Wednesday. Among the other drugs prescribed are Eli Lilly's diabetes drug Mounjaro and an older GLP-1 drug from Novo Nordisk called Saxenda, which isn't as effective for weight loss as Ozempic and Wegovy. Ozempic's list price tops $935 per monthly package, and its weight loss counterpart Wegovy is about $1,300. Other drugmakers are jockeying to capitalize on the budding weight loss industry. And analysts say Eli Lilly's Mounjaro has the potential to overtake drugs from Novo Nordisk after its approved in the U.S. for weight loss.
