The complaint also says that in 2019, the company introduced "two new dangerous features": a live-streaming feature called TikTok LIVE and a virtual currency system called TikTok "Coins." TikTok incentivizes users to go LIVE by promising these monetary rewards 'the more popular [their] content becomes.'" The suit says that TikTok "earns substantial revenue" from its Coins, charging commissions of up to 50% on each transaction.

Saul Kavonic, senior research analyst at MST Financial, said supply disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices significantly higher. Oil prices traded more than 3% on Monday, extending gains even after notching their sharpest weekly gain since early 2023 last week. "But seeing where the oil price sits right now the market doesn't seem to hold much probability for such a development at all," he added. "A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push oil prices to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150/bbl in 2008," he added.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal brought by X, Elon Musk's social media company, declining to decide whether prosecutors should have been able to obtain data from former President Donald Trump's Twitter account without him being notified. The case arose as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump over alleged election interference in 2020, which the Supreme Court stymied earlier this year by ruling that presidents have broad immunity from prosecution for official acts taken in office. Smith has already obtained the data at issue in the appeal brought by X, as Twitter is now known following Musk’s takeover of the social media company. A federal judge approved the warrant, as well as a nondisclosure order that prevents X from telling Trump or anyone else about it. North Carolina Department of Insurance communications director Jason Tyson estimated that about 139,000 properties in the state have flood insurance through the NFIP. Part of the problem with flood insurance is a common misconception that regular home insurance covers flooding, which is rarely the case, four experts knowledgable about flood insurance and disaster management told Business Insider. "We don't think of western North Carolina and the Appalachian mountains as an area that has significant flood risk."

A spokesperson for the University of Pittsburgh said it “unequivocally condemns antisemitism” and will provide campus police escorts to Jewish students during the upcoming Jewish holidays. After the attack on Goodwin, two Jewish students at the University of Michigan were assaulted in separate incidents off campus. And on Friday, a group of six to eight men assaulted another Jewish student off campus at the University of Pittsburgh while using antisemitic slurs. They said there were numerous violent attacks on Palestinian, pro-Palestinian and visibly Muslim students around college campuses, as well as harassment of visibly Muslim students or students wearing keffiyehs. In New York that month, a Jewish driver struck a protester with his car at an off-campus demonstration involving Columbia students.

☆ Appeals court greenlights betting on congressional elections

A federal appeals court on Wednesday refused to block a lower-court ruling allowing Americans to bet on the outcome of the 2024 congressional elections. The CFTC had barred KalshiEx from listing its congressional contracts on the exchange, which the commission regulates, on the ground that they would violate the laws of many states that ban gambling on elections. But a judge in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., ruled last month that the CFTC had erred in finding that KalshiEx's congressional contracts involved gaming or gambling. That ruling was in effect for only about eight hours before the D.C. appeals court stayed it at the request of the CFTC. That administrative stay was lifted in Wednesday's ruling.

Scientists with the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center began sounding the alarm as early as Sept. 23. In a YouTube video posted that morning, the National Hurricane Center’s deputy director, Jamie Rhome, described a tropical cyclone that would “briskly develop” into a hurricane.
