A man pauses outside of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on January 15, 2016 in New York City. Index-rebalance strategies, the talk of the town just a few short years ago, are seemingly on their last legs these days. What doomed the index-rebalance strategy is a tale as old as time on Wall Street. Times are tough now, but as Alex notes in his story, not everyone is completely giving up on the strategy. And while we're talking Man Group, here's a rundown on a program meant to help non-tech workers learn data-science skills to help streamline their jobs.
“Still” certainly doesn’t sugarcoat Fox’s life with Parkinson’s. At another point, a makeup artist gives him a touch-up because a fall has broken bones in his face. But such moments are reminders of just how much any movie would necessarily leave unseen. Marty McFly emerges as an almost autobiographical creation, because the making of “Back to the Future” (1985) required Fox to engage in a bit of temporal dislocation himself. To fulfill his obligations to the sitcom “Family Ties” while making the movie, he had to shuttle between sets, with little sleep in between.
When my car salesperson learned I was paying with cash, they tried to change my mind. After speaking with my financial advisor and accountant, it was clear that I was looking to buy a used car outright, in cash. My car salesperson wasn't enthusiastic about it, but I knew what I wantedYou know that old saying, "cash is king?" Or so used car salespeople would have me believe. Still, it felt good to say that I was paying cash and politely decline financing options.
Arguably the biggest financial conference of the year just wrapped in Beverly Hills. Insider's Dakin Campbell, who was on the ground at Milken, has a report on the five biggest topics discussed this year. Dakin's report got me thinking about how Milken stacks up against another high-profile conference: Davos. Milken is also designed, thanks to its namesake, with a keen eye on what the finance industry wants, he added. Bashing New York City has long been a popular pastime on the right. But New York crime isn’t really out of control. Still, even before the pandemic there was a steady if not huge flow of people out of New York. It probably wasn’t crime, although perceptions can be at odds with reality. About perceptions: From the early 1990s until the pandemic, a big decline in crime went along with consistent public beliefs that crime was rising.
John Nichols moved to Huntington, West Virginia, in 2021 after growing tired of Chicago. Katie thought that living in West Virginia would be nice because the weather was much warmer than it was in Chicago. I think aspects like these are making West Virginia more popular, especially for people who have had enough of big city life.

I just graduated from a Christian college on Wall Street, and it's on the verge of going under. The King's College is a tiny, private liberal arts school located in New York City's Financial District. And as an Asian woman who grew up in white, conservative Christian spaces, I didn't feel out of place in a student body that was predominantly white. 'Don't just go to college, come to King's'So how does a small, Christian school end up in the heart of the country's largest city? [1/2] Graffiti artist 'Maupal' known for having painted murals depicting Pope Francis as Superman poses for a photo outside his apartment near the Vatican two days before the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis' election to papacy in Rome, Italy, March 11, 2023. REUTERS/Guglielmo MangiapaneROME, March 13 (Reuters) - For Italian street artist Maurizio Pallotta, Pope Francis, who marked his 10th anniversary as pontiff on Monday, is a superhero. Another of his murals depicts the pope as a street artist painting peace signs on a wall while a Swiss Guard is watching out for the police. Francis laughed when he saw one which depicts the pope as an agile window washer wiping away atmospheric pollution in a big city. "I am a bit too fat to be able to do stuff like that," Pallotta quoted the pope as saying.
You might be surprised to learn that the place with the most polluted air in the U.S. isn't a big city, but a small town in California. This month, The Guardian released an analysis in conjunction with a group of researchers from several institutions, including the University of Washington, to rank the neighborhoods across the contiguous U.S. that have the worst air pollution. Julian Marshall, professor of environmental engineering at the University of Washington, told The Guardian that the analysis shows that neighborhoods with the worst air quality were predominantly Black and Hispanic. "What we're seeing here is segregation," Marshall said. "You have segregation of people and segregation of pollution."

Leaked audio reveals Google Cloud CEO giving a fiery speech on AI. During an internal town hall, Thomas Kurian slammed people for saying Google is late to the AI competition. In many ways, it's easier to become a brain surgeon than a Goldman partner (doctors, please spare me your hate mail). Unlike other esteemed white-collar groups — the partners at law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore, for example — turnover is somewhat common within the Goldman partnership. Insider's Carter Johnson and Dakin Campbell took a look at how many partners have left the bank since CEO David Solomon took over in 2018. In many ways, it's demonstrative of the allies the bank has across the Street. Former Goldman partners can be like missionaries for the bank, spreading the good word to anyone who will listen (and paying their fees).
The boomers' economy is brittle, stingy, and built on undersupply. While inflation may be cooling a bit, future prosperity for millennials, Gen Zers, and beyond depends on reversing this economywide bottleneck created by boomers. Boomers shrank the labor force they need nowThe baby boomers ensured the labor market of the generations after them would be inadequate in a few major ways. The boomer ethos on housing, which views homes not as places to live but as financial assets, is mirrored in the rest of the economy boomers made. They make loans, investment, and housing more expensive — putting the economy on a diet instead of growing the pie.
Commuters arrive into the Oculus station and mall in Manhattan on November 17, 2022 in New York City. According to data collected from June to November, the per-person reduction in spending in New York City was $4,661, followed by $4,200 in Los Angeles and $4,051 in Washington, D.C. My obsession is summed up pretty well by a tweet from @blagojevism: "George Santos is essentially a 19th-century character. Media depicting these characters found inspiration from real life: in a time before digital records and facial recognition, opportunity was everywhere. George Santos's brand of full-throated scammery is particularly American, something that belongs to this country as much as Abraham Lincoln and apple pie. The phrase "and if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you" comes from his legendary real-life method. But Santos, so far, has avoided jail time, giving him at least one leg up over the Yellow Kid.
