HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas attorney has been accused of using work-related visits to a county jail to smuggle in legal paperwork laced with ecstasy and synthetic marijuana to inmates over the past several months, authorities announced Monday. Ronald Lewis, 77, was arrested on Friday after arriving at the Harris County Jail in Houston to visit an inmate, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a news conference. Other attorneys are also suspected of smuggling drug-laced paperwork into the jail but “we don’t think it’s actually widespread,” Gonzalez said. We’re going to make sure we investigate it fully and hold them accountable.”Gonzalez said the county jail is like others around the country that have seen an increase in overdoses. The county jail has had at least 18 inmate deaths this year, some of them believed to be drug-related.

A Salt-of-the-Earth Town That Sparkles

After he closed Cyrus, the Healdsburg, Calif., restaurant for which he’d earned two Michelin stars, in 2012, it took the chef Douglas Keane a decade to scout the dream locale for his new restaurant. Mr. Keane finally landed last year at a former prune-packing plant overlooking vineyards where the Russian River snakes through the Alexander Valley. Those vineyards are not in Healdsburg, Sonoma County’s unofficial gastronomic headquarters, but eight miles north in blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Geyserville. “Geyserville is real, rural wine country: Farmers are out at 5 a.m.,” said the 52-year-old chef on what drew him to the town. The whole town may be just two blocks of Wild West-looking storefronts, but its charms take an entire weekend to uncover.

LAÚNDOS, Portugal (AP) — Guilherme Peixoto, a village priest in northern Portugal, has been busy this month celebrating Masses at his two parishes, presiding over remembrances for the dead — and preparing the electronic music set for his next international DJ gig. "They can think, 'If it’s possible for a priest to be DJ, it’s possible for me to like music, and festivals, and be Christian.'" The priest broke onto the global stage when the organizers of World Youth Day in Lisbon asked him to “wake up the pilgrims” at 7 a.m. before Pope Francis’ open-air Mass in August. There, he re-mixed electronic dance beats with words from Pope Francis’ encyclical about protecting the environment. “It’s very important to me to not only be the priest DJ, but be the shepherd of the community,” Peixoto said.

Citing civic duty and a quest to return the community to normal life, Lewiston residents turned out to vote in several high-profile referendums and local races. Lewiston voters were choosing a mayor and filling seven city council and eight school board seats. On Tuesday, police were on hand to put voters and 140 election workers at ease amid threats. Some election workers stayed home, either out of safety concerns or to focus on mourning, City Clerk Kathy Montejo said. Lewiston, Maine CNN —The signs were there: hearing voices, expressing paranoid thoughts and making threats so violent, extra patrols were sent to guard a military installation. Instead, law enforcement relied on the gunman’s family to keep guns from him after they tried without success to talk to the reservist. Sheriff Joel Merry told CNN on Saturday law enforcement officers weren’t able to make contact with Card during two visits. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office sent an alert to other law enforcement agencies saying they were trying to locate Card. The fact law enforcement in Maine didn’t utilize the yellow flag law in Card’s case could point to its shortcomings, Rocque said.

The gunman who fled after killing 18 people and injuring 13 others at a bar and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, last month was most likely alive during much of the sprawling two-day manhunt that had forced thousands of residents throughout the region to remain in their homes. It remains unclear whether the gunman was hiding in the recycling plant trailer the entire time after the shooting, or if he went there later, but the time estimate suggests that the lockdown in and around Lewiston was justified. Law enforcement and other officials have faced scrutiny over the manhunt, in part because they searched the recycling plant, Maine Recycling, twice without finding Mr. Card. It was during a third sweep on Oct. 27 — two days after the shooting — that they also searched for the first time an adjacent dirt parking lot used by the company. That search took place after a supervisor at the company reached out to the police and suggested they look through the trailers, officials have said.

Mr. Biden huddled privately with the families of those killed or injured during last month’s rampage that claimed the lives of 18 people at a bar and a bowling alley in the city about an hour north of Portland. “Jill and I are here on behalf of the American people to grieve with you, and make sure you know that you’re not alone,” Mr. Biden said after stopping by a makeshift memorial in Lewiston with his wife, Jill Biden. About 90 percent of the students who reported vaping said they used flavored products, citing favorites that tasted like fruit and candy. Public health experts also linked other state and local flavor bans and education campaigns to the falling high school vaping rate, which is the lowest in nearly a decade. In all, about 2.1 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes, down from 2.5 million last year. While the agency has authorized about two dozen vaping products for sale, thousands of illicit candy-colored flavored vapes have flooded the country and are top sellers. Other researchers noted that the combined general use of tobacco products by middle and high school students barely fell, to 10 percent this year from 11 percent last year.

President Biden will travel to Maine on Friday to pay his respects to the 18 people killed and more than dozen wounded during a gunman’s rampage through a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, last week, the White House announced. Shortly after the massacre, Mr. Biden declared his frustration at the taking of yet more lives in a mass shooting. The gunman, Robert R. Card II, 40, was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot on Friday, two days after the killings. “Once again, an American community and American families have been devastated by gun violence,” Mr. Biden said on Friday as the discovery of Mr. Card’s body brought an end to a vast manhunt and lockdowns in the state. “In all, at least 18 souls brutally slain, more injured, some critically, and scores of family and friends praying and experiencing trauma no one ever wants to imagine.”In a statement, the White House said the president and the first lady would “pay respects to the victims of this horrific attack and grieve with families and community members.” The president will also meet with emergency medical workers, nurses and other officials, the White House said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will travel to Maine later this week to mourn with the community of Lewiston after 18 people were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in state history, the White House said Wednesday. Biden and first lady Jill Biden will go Friday to pay their respects to the victims, meet with first responders and others and will “grieve with families and community members,” the White House said in a statement. Investigators have yet to establish a motive but have increasingly focused on the mental health of Card, who was a firearms instructor. Card had also undergone a mental health evaluation after he began behaving erratically at a training facility last summer. Biden was alerted about the shooting as he hosted a White House state dinner honoring the bonds between the United States and Australia.

Reuters was not able to contact Card's relatives or officials at the Army Reserve unit. Instead, a sheriff's deputy spoke with officials at the 3rd Battalion 304 Training Group and connected them with Card's family. The battalion officials "assured our office that they would ensure that Card received medical attention," the sheriff's office said in the statement. After conferring with the Army Reserve unit and Card's brother the sheriff's office made no further attempts to contact Card: Card's unit commander told the deputy that Card no longer had any weapons from the reserve unit.
