"The labor market is basically OK, but it does seem to be slowing," said Guy Berger, principal economist at LinkedInin San Francisco. "The Fed is going to try to thread the needle where they slow down the labor market enough to put downward pressure on wages and inflation, without causing a recession." Still, the labor market remains tight, with 1.9 job openings per unemployed person at the end of September. Stripping out any distortions from the weather and calendar quirk, wage growth is cooling. The increase in the unemployment rate from 3.5% September reflected a 328,000 decline in household employment. "The hope is that the labor market is merely returning to a more normal pace, rather than sitting dead in the water."

Johnson & Johnson is betting on a promising and fast-growing category of heart pumps to jump-start sales in its medical-device business with a new $16.6 billion deal to acquire Abiomed Inc. The health-products company will face challenges meeting ambitious growth targets for the new business, however, and ongoing clinical trials aren’t certain to produce results that will lead to wider use of Abiomed’s devices that J&J is counting on, analysts say.
The spin-off of J & J's consumer business, including such brands as Band-Aid and Tylenol, is expected in November of next year. Bottom line The new standalone J & J consumer company will be called Kenvue . A decision like this, to lay out nearly $17 billion, or $380 per Abiomed share, upfront, can therefore speak to management's confidence in the opportunity this acquisition presents. Jury selection began Monday in the Manhattan district attorney’s prosecution of the Trump Organization for tax fraud. The trial judge may be tempted to eliminate anyone who acknowledges having formed some opinions before trial about Trump personally or the evidence reported in the media against the Trump Organization. But in March, the Supreme Court reinstated Tsarnaev’s death sentence, arguably changing jury selection for the worse. In the Black Lives Matter era, we have seen several high-profile trials that challenged the search for impartial jurors. And it’s not a standard that should be employed as jurors are vetted in the New York criminal trial of the Trump Organization.
