Apple is now worth $3 trillion
  + stars: | 2023-06-30 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
New York CNN —Apple is once again worth $3 trillion, the only company ever to reach that milestone. With 15.7 billion shares outstanding, that stock price pushed Apple to its historic market value. Apple has been here once before: On January 3, 2022, Apple hit the $3 trillion mark during intraday trading, but it failed to close there. If Apple closes above the $3 trillion mark, it will become the only company ever to achieve that feat. This year’s stock market success for Apple comes in sharp contrast to 2022.

It's a startling achievement, given what's happened in the tech industry over the past four decades. Meta and Tesla , which both got hammered last year, have more than doubled in value so far in 2023. Nvidia shares soared 190% in the first half, lifting the 30-year-old company's market cap past $1 trillion.

Mark Zuckerberg is revamping his image, showing off his martial arts skills on Instagram. Beating Elon Musk in a cage fight would strengthen his comeback. That also plays well to a certain kind of tech crowd — the kind that loves both Joe Rogan and Lex Fridman. No wonder he's accepted a cage-fight challenge from Elon Musk. In another vindication, Apple has fueled hype for Mark Zuckerberg's pet project, the metaverse, by launching the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset.

Instead, Apple used words like "machine learning" and "spatial computing" to describe Vision Pro. Here are four terms Apple used while launching Vision Pro, and three it actively didn't. Apple blew reviewers and analysts away last Monday when it dropped the Vision Pro. The Apple Vision Pro, which is expected to be released in 2024, comes with a $3,499 price tag — much higher than competing devices like Meta's $499 Quest 3. Here are some of the key terms Apple did use in the presentation to launch Vision Pro, and some it seemingly steered clear of:

Mark Zuckerberg says Apple's new headset will make everyone lonelier. But even Meta's headset is, in the end, someone sitting alone on a couch too. As he pushes Meta's efforts to build out this alternative internet, naturally he's been keeping an eye on Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro goggles. That the Vision Pro is an isolating device isn't wrong. But where he's misguided is thinking Meta's vision is any better.

CNN —Days after Apple unveiled its $3,499 mixed reality headset, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared to take a jab at the company’s pricing and vision for the product. “Our device is also about being active and doing things,” Zuckerberg said at an all-hands meeting with Meta employees on Thursday, referencing its Quest VR headset line. The Apple Vision Pro headset blends both virtual reality and augmented reality, a technology that overlays virtual images on live video of the real world. Last week, Zuckerberg tried to preempt the expected Apple headset announcement by teasing the Meta Quest 3. In his remarks to employees, Zuckerberg repeatedly focused on headset pricing.

CNN —It’s not surprising that Apple’s debut Monday of its $3,499 Vision Pro headset integrating virtual and augmented reality was greeted with mixed reactions, including skepticism, criticism and even lampooning. Each previous incarnation of a headset that immerses the wearer in a virtual world (called virtual reality, or VR) or lets wearers see their surroundings with virtual objects overlaid on them (augmented reality, or AR) started with overhyped expectations only to flame out. I am also doing my doctoral research on the history of virtual and augmented reality (known together as “extended reality”). These apps will be available to Vision Pro users as well.
