But they need to grasp a critical point: Joe Biden is not yet the nominee of the Democratic Party. The nominee is chosen at the national convention (this year, it’s in Chicago in mid-August). As the party’s charter explains, “The national convention shall be the highest authority of the Democratic Party.” Under party rules, a nominee must win an absolute majority of delegates on a given presidential ballot at the convention. Now, with democracy in the balance, the convention can return to its old role of actually choosing the nominee. But it must decide alongside Mr. Biden.

Some of this stems from the belief that AI benefits workers with greater task-based responsibilities versus the broader job responsibilities of higher-level workers (with many experts saying AI is nearly at the level of a good intern). Still, 30% of senior-level employees fear they'll be fired for lacking AI skills, according to a recent report from online tutoring company Preply. Experienced employees can master AI insightsDespite the general stereotype that older workers (who often make up the senior-level echelon) have a harder time adapting to new technology, Preston recognizes that these are the workers for whom AI has unique advantages. "It would be easy to write off older workers and say this is just going to be too hard for them, they're not going to adapt," Preston said. "Let's lean into the value of AI to help leverage the jobs of the future for older workers, rather than assuming that for some reason, it's going to leave them behind."

The outlook for stocks is becoming more favorable as inflation slows and the Federal Reserve looks to cut interest rates by yearend, according to UBS. Against that backdrop, UBS thinks investors should maintain a neutral view and remain strategic in their stock allocations. Here are some of the stocks on the UBS list: One of the stocks added to the list was San Diego-based, medical device maker Dexcom . Despite growth in the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) segment of the diabetes market over the past few years, the sizable diabetes market has a "relatively low" penetration rate, according to UBS. Crude oil futures rose Thursday as inflation eased, bolstering hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this year. Lower interest rates typically stimulate economic growth, which can bolster crude oil demand. The inflation and interest rate outlook overshadowed mixed signals on oil demand for this year. The IEA is forecasting global oil demand growth will average just under 1 million bpd in 2024 due to subpar economic growth, greater energy efficiency and electric vehicle adoption. OPEC, on the other hand, is much more bullish, forecasting demand growth of 2.2 million bpd as the cartel sees solid economic growth of 2.9% this year.

Wuhan is the largest operational region for Baidu's Apollo Go, one of the largest robotaxi operators in China. CNBC was unable to independently verify the document, which claimed the taxi company had to stop operating four of its 159-car fleet since April due to falling income. Ride-hailing drivers on the riseA surge of new companies and ride-hailing drivers have meanwhile prompted some local governments to restrict the industry. China had more than 7 million registered ride-hailing drivers as of the end of May, according to the Ministry of Transport. With that in mind, the authors of the note — led by Ryan Hammond — are closely watching downward revenue revisions for signs the AI spending isn't paying off. "Today's hyperscalers will eventually be required to prove that revenues and earnings will be generated from their investments," analysts wrote. "Investors have expressed uncertainty about the return on those investments for the mega-cap tech stocks, but these stocks remain extremely popular," the analysts wrote. Goldman also points out that, according to a measure it tracks, just 5% of companies are currently using AI to produce goods and services. "Adjusting for profits of these companies, the AI capex cycle still pales in comparison to the tech bubble," the analysts wrote.

"Our conversations with investors have been defined by skepticism about latter stages of AI adoption," Ryan Hammond of Goldman's portfolio strategy research team said in a recent note to clients. "Even among investors that are long-term bullish on the potential gains from AI adoption, there appears to be considerable uncertainty about the timeline." Goldman's AI adoption tracker showed that only 5% of U.S. companies are using generative AI to produce goods and services. Many software companies tied to AI posted disappointing guidance during the last earnings seasons that triggered a sizeable sell-off, Goldman noted. Investors should focus on revised sales forecasts of AI-related companies, Goldman said.

Adoption referred to both experimentation and full implementation in the survey. He reasoned that while higher interest rates were a concern, solid earnings growth would keep stocks afloat. Since then, the S&P 500 has rallied 11.1% off its early May lows and extended its year-to-date surge to 16.9%. Since UBS GWM is neutral on US stocks, Lefkowitz recommends that investors keep their expectations in check and look for alternatives. Though not flashy, bonds boast attractive yields and should continue to rally if the Fed cuts rates this fall, according to UBS GWM. "We think investors should position for a lower interest rate environment and buy quality bonds, which have attractive yields and the potential for capital appreciation amid the potential for a deeper easing cycle," Marcelli wrote in the note.

It's a fraction of the size of the platform the RNC used during the 2016 and 2020 election cycles. The Trump campaign in a press release Monday afternoon touted the new document as "President Donald J. Trump's 2024 Republican Party Platform." The platform now begins with language mirroring a Trump campaign press release, including the presumptive nominee's "Make America Great Again" and "America First" slogans. The GOP also departs from its old platform on Social Security and Medicare. "Republicans will tackle Inflation, unleash American Energy, restore Economic Growth, and secure our Borders to preserve Social Security and Medicare funding for the next Generation and beyond," it reads.

Stocks within the adoption frameworkWhile there could be a few angles one might use to determine where a company fits within AI's development, Goldman Sachs created their version of AI's adoption phases. Additional early winners of AI were mega-cap technology names that had steep earnings growth and attracted a lot of investors. Throughout 2023, there was a 53% gap in annual earnings growth between the top five AI names and the rest of the S&P 500. But as we enter 2025, Goldman estimates that the earnings growth between the big five and the rest of the market will tighten. The graph below demonstrates Goldman's forecast of a slowdown in earnings growth from the concentrated names and a modest pickup for the broader market.

I believe Tesla (TSLA) remains one of the purest AI plays available to investors and has even more room to go higher as shorts cover their positions and investor enthusiasm reignites. The recent surge in TSLA's stock price has changed sentiment as Tesla seemingly has regained its mojo. Another key milestone event lays ahead at the August robotaxi event. However, I do have concerns that the robotaxi event could disappoint and I suggest traders to manage any and all Tesla risk prior to that event. Also, I chose an end of July expiration date for this spread which is about a week before the much anticipated robotaxi event.

AI systems need lots of computers to make them work. The end result has been that Google’s greenhouse gas emissions have soared 48% since 2019, according to the tech giant’s annual environment report. An October study from Dutch researcher Alex de Vries estimated that the “worst-case scenario” suggests Google’s AI systems could eventually consume as much electricity as the country of Ireland each year, assuming a full-scale adoption of AI in their current hardware and software. It added that data center electricity consumption is currently growing faster than it can bring carbon-free electricity sources online. The company has also used AI to suggest more fuel-efficient routes to drivers using Google Maps.

Investors now want to know whether these Big Tech giants will be able to make a return on their investment — a precursor for further spending on AI chips. However, "tentative" signs have started to emerge that spending on AI chips may be spurring investment in the broader economy, Capital Economics said.
