SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Once a sports superpower, Cuba now celebrates every gold medal at the Pan American Games. Heavyweight Julio César La Cruz beat Brazil's Keno Machado 4-1 in the final and became the first ever athlete of the sport to win a fourth Pan American gold medal. Dominican Yunior Alcántara reduced the deficit in the Caribbean bout with a gold medal that didn't make him sweat in the final. Cuba is the country with most medals for boxing in the history of the Pan American Games. But that position in Santiago was passed on to Brazil, with four gold medal winners.

U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., October 24, 2023. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - U.S. House Republicans picked Majority Leader Tom Emmer as their nominee for speaker on Tuesday, making him the third pick in as many weeks, after the last two failed to garner enough support on the House floor to get the gavel. LEADERSHIP ROLEEmmer served as chair of the House Republicans' campaign arm from 2019 to 2022, helping to win back the majority in 2022 before being elected majority whip. Emmer has pushed back on this, pointing to his endorsements of Trump in 2016 and 2020, and adding that other Republican leaders have also not endorsed Trump yet, including former speaker nominee Steve Scalise and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. However Trump came out swinging against Emmer on Tuesday, saying on social media, "Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!"

Before the court action, Alabama – which is 27% Black – had only one Black-majority congressional district out of seven seats. The case is expected to land before the all-Republican state Supreme Court, where DeSantis appointees hold most seats. A separate federal case in Georgia challenges the congressional map on constitutional grounds and is slated to go to trial next month. UtahThe state Supreme Court, in a case it heard in July, is considering whether it even has the authority to weigh in on map-drawing decisions by the GOP-controlled state legislature. Advocacy groups and a handful of voters are challenging a congressional map that further carved up Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County between four decidedly Republican districts.

CNN —The high-stakes race for House speaker enters a new phase this week, with a slate of new candidates vying for the gavel following Rep. Jim Jordan’s exit from the race. Scott, who represents Georgia’s 8th Congressional District, serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Armed Services Committee and the House Agriculture Committee. The failed full-court press to install Republican Rep. Jim Jordan as House Speaker revealed ugly examples of how violent threats are becoming normalized inside Trump’s GOP. According to Rep. In the next breath, however, he says that the war in Israel creates moral urgency to push through a Jim Jordan speakership. CNN —Twenty years ago this month, I was a young Marine lieutenant marching down a California street in an Iraq War victory parade. It was the right decision to kill insurgents without losing more Marines, but leveling a school doesn’t win you a lot of hearts and minds. To be sure, there are some fundamental differences between Israel’s war with Hamas and America’s war in Iraq. Our First Marine Division motto in Iraq, under General Mattis, was “no better friend, no worse enemy.” I want Hamas to know no greater enemy than the Israeli Army, and I want to see every Hamas fighter defeated. There are a lot of peace-loving Palestinians in Gaza who loathe Hamas, but it’s up to the Israeli Army to prove themselves better friends.

The bulk of the Trump PAC money went to law firms that have defended Trump against a series of criminal charges or in civil lawsuits. “Well, if the little fish’s lawyer is being paid by the big fish that’s less likely to happen potentially.”The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. That money is earmarked for political and campaign activities, not for legal expenses, according to the campaign. To help pay the legal fees, Trump’s political operation has also moved millions from his super PAC, MAGA Inc. Those concerns are amplified in court records filed by Smith’s team in the Mar-a-Lago case.

But its following has surged on popular messaging app Telegram since its October 7 terror attack on Israel. Hamas is a designated foreign terror organization in the United States, and new internet laws in the European Union mean large social media platforms can face penalties for hosting terroristic content. Hamas’ growing audienceThe Telegram channel for Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, had about 200,000 followers at the time of the attack. Fishman said while the huge growth in the number of people following Hamas’ Telegram accounts is concerning, it doesn’t mean all the followers are supporters – pointing out that many journalists, researchers and others are likely following the accounts. And that could make it more difficult for plaintiffs to use legal action to force Telegram to remove Hamas content.

A pipe for transporting carbon dioxide to removal equipment is shown at the Tomakomai carbon, capture and storage (CCS) test site in Tomakomai, Hokkaido prefecture, Japan March 22, 2018. Japan aims to cut total carbon emissions by 46% by 2030 from 2013 levels, and has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2050. In Japan, those difficulties are made worse by the already-strained state of the national power system due to the sharp drop in nuclear power generation since the 2011 Fukushima disaster. Over the longer term, Japan is also targeting increases in wind power generation, especially from offshore sites. The United States Supreme Court building is seen as in Washington, U.S., October 4, 2023. In this case, the state legislature was accused of racial gerrymandering to reduce the influence of Black voters. The Republican legislators and other state officials who appealed to the Supreme Court told the justices that the map was designed to secure partisan advantages, a practice that the Supreme Court in 2019 decided was not reviewable by federal courts - unlike racial gerrymandering, which remains illegal. The new map increased the district's share of white voters while reducing its share of Black voters, which the lower court referred to as "bleaching." The United States Supreme Court building is seen as in Washington, U.S., October 4, 2023. At issue is a map adopted last year by the Republican-led state legislature delineating the boundaries of one of South Carolina's seven U.S. House districts. A panel of three federal judges blocked the map for South Carolina's coastal 1st congressional district, which includes parts of Charleston. In this case, the state legislature was accused of racial gerrymandering to reduce the influence of Black voters. Clyburn's is the only one of South Carolina's House districts held by a Democrat.

But his political fortunes may be in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court as he seeks election in a coastal House district that includes parts of Charleston. Black voters tend to favor Democratic candidates. In this case, the Republican-controlled state legislature was accused of racial gerrymandering to reduce the influence of Black voters. Clyburn's is the only one of South Carolina's seven U.S. House districts held by a Democrat. In another historical parallel, that district also was redrawn by 19th century legislators who sought to weaken the influence of Black voters.

"The Exorcist: Believer" possessed the box office during its opening weekend, but industry experts wonder if it will continue to turn heads in the weeks to come. Still, on a production budget of just $30 million, "The Exorcist: Believer" could prove profitable if it continues to lure moviegoers in the coming weeks. "The Exorcist: Believer" fled from its original release date (Oct. 13) because Swift announced her Eras Tour concert film would arrive in cinemas that day. The film quickly snared the coveted, higher priced, premium format screens, leaving little room for "The Exorcist: Believer" to eke out a solid opening. The potential same-day opening was almost immediately shut down when "The Exorcist: Believer" moved its release date up a week.
