New York officials released Monday forensic sketches and informational flyers about a possible new victim in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, in an effort to identify them and get new leads in the roughly 20-year-old homicide. HONG KONG — A Hong Kong man pleaded guilty Monday to sedition for wearing a T-shirt bearing a protest slogan, in the Chinese territory’s first conviction under new local national security legislation. He was arrested in November while wearing the shirt at the Hong Kong airport. Sedition is generally defined as inciting hatred or contempt against the Chinese central government, the Hong Kong government or the judiciary. Officials said the local legislation was necessary to close “loopholes” in a national security law that Beijing imposed in 2020, which did not cover sedition. Hong Kong and Chinese officials say both laws were necessary to restore stability after the protests, which sometimes turned violent.

The history of the US Secret Service

The agency was commissioned within the Treasury Department, and the Secret Service was entirely focused on counterfeit money, a major problem of the day. Threatening presidents was not made a crime until 1917, the same year Congress approved Secret Service protection for the immediate family of a president. The Secret Service remained a part of the Treasury Department until 2003, when a massive government reorganization after the 9/11 terror attacks moved the Secret Service to the Department of Homeland Security. But the Secret Service is still tasked with fighting financial crimes. The entire Secret Service employs nearly 8,000 people for its protective and investigative missions, and it secures thousands of events each year.

CNN —A mayoral debate in the Brazilian city of São Paulo turned ugly when one of the candidates attacked a rival with a chair. Video from the debate, broadcast live on Sunday by TV Cultura, shows a tense exchange between José Luiz Datena and Pablo Marçal before Datena swings the chair at his counterpart. Datena later told TV Cultura that he had attacked Marçal – who required hospital treatment for his injuries – because he had brought up old sexual harassment allegations against Datena that were dismissed several years ago. “He came with a case that was archived, that was not even investigated by the police because there was no evidence. CNN —Germany has begun new controls at all of its land borders as part of a crackdown on migration, placing restrictions on a wide area of free movement known as the Schengen Zone and stirring anger among its European neighbors. From Monday, as well as existing border controls with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, Germany will now also have internal border controls with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. Berlin will have the power to reject people at all land borders, a statement from the Interior Ministry said. The move marks how far Germany has shifted in recent years on the flashpoint issue of migration. Under European Union rules, member states have the ability to temporarily reintroduce border control at internal borders in the event of a serious threat to public policy or internal security.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — It was meant to be an event to help heal the community. Instead, Haitian residents and advocates were confronted by a small group of frustrated Springfield residents and at least one right-wing provocateur Saturday evening outside the local Haitian Community Help & Support Center. They questioned why so many immigrants had moved into Springfield “illegally,” a claim that city officials have repeatedly said is not true. Haitian residents and people who had gathered to support them deescalated the confrontation shortly before police arrived. Thrust into the national spotlight by baseless — and to many, racist — rumors of Haitian residents killing and eating wildlife and pets, its economic comeback has been dramatically overshadowed by tensions that once rarely reached beyond city council meetings.
