Oil drops on weak sentiment, set for weekly decline
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices ticked higher on Thursday, buoyed by a bigger-than-expected weekly decline in U.S. crude stocks. Oil prices fell on Friday, setting up for a second weekly decline, as mixed economic signals weighed on investor sentiment and boosted the dollar. Brent crude prices fell by 51 cents, or 0.6%, to $84.50 a barrel by 0035 GMT. "Crude oil was under pressure amid a broader risk-off tone across markets," Hynes said. Oil prices found some support in the prior two sessions after the U.S. government reported a bigger-than-expected weekly decline in oil stockpiles.

For Europe, the prime concern is tariffs," wrote Goldman analysts. "If the entire impact came in 2025 this would be enough to eliminate any growth that year (our current top-down forecast is 4%)," Goldman wrote. Within sectors, beneficiaries of rising trade risks tend to be defensive stocks such as utilities, health care as well as Europe's GRANOLAS stocks, according to the bank. But he says a "meaningful selloff" in mega tech will see other names "pushed down as collateral damage." And if the AI narrative plays out as expected, a material sell-off in Mega Tech will present a buying opportunity in those names as well," he wrote.

Now, the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has injected even more uncertainty into the US political landscape. 3 trades for political riskFirst, cash remains king. Within the financial sector, Landsberg recommends that investors allocate part of their portfolio to insurance companies, which can benefit from inflation by raising premiums. While concentration isn't always a cause of concern, increased volatility due to political turbulence can lead market conditions to change quickly. Muni yields are at their highest levels in years, offering significantly better compensation than in recent history. For example, let's say you're in the 35% tax bracket, comparing an 8% corporate bond to a 5.25% muni bond. Still, in 2024, municipal credit upgrades have outpaced downgrades by a ratio of 2.1 to 1, as of March 31, according to Moody's Analytics. The federal exemption for muni bond interestAmid the looming 2025 tax cliff and federal budget deficit, some experts also worry about the federal tax break for muni bond investors, Kozlik said. Although the exemption remained intact through TCJA negotiations, federal lawmakers enacted other changes that raised levies on muni bond issuers.

Since calling the bottom of the real estate market at the beginning of the year, Blackstone's confidence that inflation is receding has continued to increase, leading to more deployment of capital into real estate. It's also providing more possibilities to exit and realize returns on its real estate assets. NEW YORK AP —John Deere says it will no longer sponsor “social or cultural awareness” events, becoming the latest major US company to distance itself from diversity and inclusion measures after being targeted by conservative backlash. The move from the company known on Wall Street as Deere & Co. arrives just weeks after rural retailer Tractor Supply ended an array of its corporate diversity and climate efforts. Both announcements came after backlash piled up online from conservative activists opposed to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, sponsorship of LGBTQ+ Pride events and climate advocacy. “If it’s so polarizing that people just abandon it, then we all lost.”Legal attacks against companies’ diversity, equity and inclusion efforts have also drawn more attention following the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling to end affirmative action in college admissions. That doesn’t mean companies will stop their DEI efforts entirely, she added, but they may have to change language or find new workarounds.

How business credit scores differ from personal credit scoresWhile business and personal credit scores share some similarities, such as their impact on your borrowing power, they don't perfectly align. Business credit scores are based on underlying business credit reports that track loans, credit lines, business credit cards, and other business borrowing activity to help lenders and business partners understand how risky the underlying business is when it comes to credit. Just like there are three credit bureaus that track consumer credit scores, there are multiple companies that track business credit scores. After a difficult two years for small cap stocks, the sector finally appears on path for a comeback, according to Citi Research head of U.S. equity strategy Scott Chronert. The small cap benchmark Russell 2000 index is up 4.3% week to date alone amid a 9.4% rally in July. As investors become more enthusiastic on the prospect of forthcoming interest rate cuts, they've started to sell off mega cap technology names — which have led the market rally — in favor of the rate-sensitive small cap sector. Banks currently have an "easier" valuation starting point, according to Chronert. The sector overall contains little exposure to tariffs — which has become a major campaign platform of former president Donald Trump.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump said the Federal Reserve should not cut interest rates before the presidential election, according to an interview he did with Bloomberg Businessweek. The Federal Open Market Committee has two interest rate decisions scheduled before the election in July and September. "I think it's past time for them to cut interest rates," Zandi said. During a February interview with Fox News, Trump accused Powell of being "political" and planning interest rate cuts to coincide with the election. "I think he's going to do something to probably help the Democrats, I think, if he lowers interest rates," Trump said, adding that "it looks to me like he's trying to lower interest rates for the sake of maybe getting people elected."

As is clear, that objective is considerably higher than the 2021 peak, which was the last time IWM made a new all-time high. The obvious question then would be this: If IWM does, in fact, make a new all-time high, what happens next? First, notice how well the IWM/SPX relative line performed as it rallied from a key low to a peak since 2011. Conversely, during the three times that IWM has broken out to new highs in absolute terms, the IWM/SPX relative line has declined soon thereafter. In fact, the relative line has been diverging from IWM for 13 years and hasn't made a higher high since 2011.
