The tight timeline will magnify any missteps Ms. Harris might make but also minimize the chances for a stumble. And in a race that Mr. Trump had been on a trajectory to win, Ms. Harris immediately becomes the ultimate X-factor. She was making the argument for herself but the logic applies to Ms. Harris, too. Her day job is not nearly as demanding as Mr. Biden’s, and she can barnstorm the country at a pace far faster than Mr. Trump has undertaken. And while Ms. Harris did not carve out a reputation in California as an outspoken progressive — her tagline as D.A.

Tadej Pogačar completes dominant Tour de France victory
  + stars: | 2024-07-21 | by ( Issy Ronald | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —A certain nonchalance has marked Tadej Pogačar’s ruthless overall victory at this year’s Tour de France, a race he has dominated from start to finish, accomplishing feats not achieved for more than a quarter of century. His fifth and sixth stage victories of the race followed on Saturday and Sunday, the biggest haul for any rider since 2009 and an enormous amount for a general classification rider like Pogačar. Not since 1948 has a rider won five mountain stages in a single edition of the race like Pogacar did this year. Their rivalry has shaped every edition of the Tour de France since 2021 when Denmark’s Vingegaard emerged as an unlikely challenger to a rampant Pogačar. Only young Remco Evenepoel, making his Tour de France debut, could remain within touching distance of these two, eventually finishing in third place, 9:18 behind Pogačar.

A state judge in Florida has given former President Donald J. Trump a legal victory, refusing to toss a libel lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump over a statement made by the board of the Pulitzer Prizes on coverage of the 2016 Trump campaign’s connections to Russia. The ruling on Saturday by Robert Pegg, a senior judge on a circuit court in Florida, means that Mr. Trump’s case will proceed, opening the door to a discovery phase that may allow Mr. Trump’s lawyers to question Pulitzer officials, who issue the most prestigious prizes in journalism. After the prize was awarded, a special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, investigating the Russian interference allegations, said he could find no evidence that Mr. Trump or his aides had coordinated with the interference effort. Mr. Trump and others who disputed the reporting had urged the Pulitzer Prize Board to revoke the award, but in its 2022 statement, the Pulitzer Prize board said two independent reviews had found nothing to discredit the articles. The reviews found that “no passages or headlines, contentions or assertions in any of the winning submissions were discredited by facts that emerged subsequent to the conferral of the prizes,” the board said in the statement.

CNN —President Joe Biden ran for reelection to save democracy. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a letter he posted to X on Sunday afternoon. His struggles validated concerns of majorities of voters that he would be too old for a second term that would have ended when he is 86. But in the end, Biden could not find a way to make voters unsee the poignant picture of an 81-year-old commander in chief who appeared to have seriously declined and was stumbling in the debate. Years earlier, in March 1952, Harry S. Truman, another Democratic president, had decided not to seek his own second term.

CNN —President Joe Biden outraised – and dramatically outspent – the campaign of Republican rival Donald Trump last month, new campaign reports filed Saturday show, raising questions about how long the president’s political team can operate at full throttle if donations dry up. By contrast, Trump’s campaign spent just shy of $10 million, leaving $128 million in its war chest. One fundraiser that proceeded over the weekend in Cape Cod brought in more $2 million, campaign officials said. Trump’s campaign, meanwhile, has consistently spent far less than Biden’s. A super PAC backing Trump’s candidacy, MAGA Inc., meanwhile, entered July with nearly $114 million in available cash.

On Sunday, the American clinched the Open Championship to claim the second major of his career. South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence finished one shot behind Rose and Horschel in tied-fourth, with American Russell Henley a further stroke back. Yet the attacks were coming from all angles now, the most ferocious of all from playing partner Lawrence and Schauffele, two holes ahead. The steely-eyed barrage continued with two more birdies across the next three holes to open up a three shot lead. Rose and Lawrence had barely erred, each bogeying just once, but such was the relentless pace set by Schauffele.

Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat seeking re-election, has noticed voters returning to the same question in recent days as she crisscrosses her state to make the case for her campaign: Does she think President Biden can win in November, and should he even try? “Typically, I’ll go to an event; I’ll share my remarks,” Ms. Baldwin said in an interview on Friday at a newly opened campaign office in southwestern Wisconsin. “And then people come up one by one and — at first in a whisper — are really concerned.”A soft-spoken two-term senator who has carved out a reputation for her cross-party appeal, Ms. Baldwin easily cruised to victory in 2018, and her race this year was never expected to be ultracompetitive, even in this crucial swing state. But rising concerns about Mr. Biden’s age and fitness to run have introduced new risks for Democratic candidates like Ms. Baldwin just 100 days out from Election Day, imperiling even seats that were once considered relatively safe for the party. That has left Democrats already anxious about losing the White House to former President Donald J. Trump contemplating the prospect of widespread losses in Congress that could leave the party locked out of power altogether during a Trump presidency and well beyond.

Schauffele is the first player to win the PGA and Open in the same season since Rory McIlroy did it 10 years ago. With the 2024 major schedule completed, this is the first time American players have swept a major season (in a year when all four were contested) since 1982. Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

Former US President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “not to believe the ‘fake news’” that his possible reelection would help Russia, the Ukrainian president’s press secretary said Saturday. The two also talked about the latest Russian attacks on Ukraine and “agreed in principle” to hold a joint meeting, he said. The phone call between Trump and Zelensky marked their first conversation since the former president left the White House, and came the day after Trump formally accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for president. Trump’s newly minted running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, is a staunch critic of sending support to Ukraine. Trump on Friday said he “had a very good phone call” with Zelensky, while the Ukrainian president said he wished Trump “strength and absolute safety in the future,” and “noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral” US support for Ukraine.

An official Republican presidential nominee who is also the most polarizing figure in modern American history. Growing talk that Donald Trump could win in a landslide. “There are decades when nothing happens, and weeks when decades happen,” Lenin is widely quoted as saying. To me, the tumult raised fears but also offered hopes and potential turning points — the most significant of which is the prospect of President Biden withdrawing from the race, as it seems he’s considering. Trump had a triumphant and exultant week, but his acceptance speech also underscored his lack of discipline and tendency to hail himself as America’s Caesar.

The Voting Machine Conspiracy Theorists Are Still at It
  + stars: | 2024-07-20 | by ( Alan Feuer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Nearly four years later, zealous supporters of former President Donald J. Trump who promoted the conspiracy theory that Dominion Voting Systems had rigged its machines to rob him of the 2020 election are still at it. Even though Dominion has aggressively defended itself in court, a network of pro-Trump activists has continued to push false claims against the company, often by seeking to use information gleaned from the very defamation lawsuits the firm has filed against them. The network includes wealthy business executives like Patrick Byrne, who once ran Overstock.com, and Mike Lindell, the founder of the bedding company MyPillow. Both have sought without credible evidence to put Dominion at the heart of a vast conspiracy to deny Mr. Trump a victory. It also includes a pro-Trump sheriff from southwest Michigan, a former election official from Colorado and Mr. Byrne’s own lawyer, who is facing charges of tampering with Dominion machines and who once worked alongside Mr. Trump’s legal team in claiming that the company was part of a plot to subvert the last election.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky became the first foreign leader to attend Britain’s cabinet meeting in person since former U.S. president Bill Clinton in 1997, in a public display of Britain’s staunch support for Ukraine as doubts grow about future U.S. military aid if Donald J. Trump wins a second presidential term. Mr. Zelensky briefed the British government’s top ministers on Friday on his country’s military conflict with Russia, while discussing moves to prevent oil tankers from breaching international sanctions against Moscow. The Ukrainian president, who was greeted with a standing ovation, was the first foreign leader to be invited into Downing Street by Keir Starmer, the new British prime minister, following his general election victory earlier this month. The two leaders also discussed a new defense export support treaty designed to boost production of military hardware and weaponry in both countries. Mr. Zelensky’s visit to Downing Street followed his attendance on Thursday at a summit of more than 45 European leaders at Blenheim Palace, near Oxford, where Ukraine was high on the agenda, and where he won renewed pledges of support for his battle against the forces of Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin.
