May 5 (Reuters) - Skinner, the bay colt trained by John Shirreffs, has become the fourth horse scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby, bringing the field for the first leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown down to 19, Churchill Downs said on Friday. Skinner was a fast-closing third in his most-recent outing, the Santa Anita Derby in early April, and was seen as a serious contender for the Kentucky Derby. The announcement comes a day after Lord Miles, Practical Move and Continuar were also scratched from the field, each for varying reasons. The last time four horses were scratched from the Kentucky Derby was 2015 when 22 horses entered the race. Lord Miles was scratched after Churchill Downs suspended the bay colt's trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. following the death of two of his horses at the property ahead of the Kentucky Derby.
The NewsA coalition of organizations that support abortion rights is planning to spend millions of dollars in an effort to place a measure protecting abortion rights on Florida’s ballot next year. The coalition of groups includes Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Planned Parenthood’s Florida affiliates, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, Florida Rising and Women’s Voices of SW Florida. Last month, a liberal Wisconsin judge won a crucial State Supreme Court race by a significant margin after running on her support for abortion rights. At the same time, if Mr. DeSantis runs for president as expected, he has clear incentives to defend the six-week ban he signed. A representative for Mr. DeSantis did not immediately respond on Friday when asked for comment on the ballot initiative plans.
The horses in the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby are listed in order of post position, with comments by Joe Drape and Melissa Hoppert of The New York Times. The morning-line odds were set by Mike Battaglia of Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., where the race will be held. Skinner was scratched Friday, and the morning-line favorite, Forte, was scratched Saturday, reducing the field to 18 horses. The last time four entrants were scratched from the Derby was 2015. Because of the scratches, more than half the horses in the field will break from post positions that don’t match their program numbers.

The event helped train the Air Force to use roads in case runways aren't an option. But that didn't stop the US Air Force from using the roads to land several aircraft — including one of its biggest planes. An MQ-9 Reaper with the 2nd Special Operations Squadron lands on Highway 287 during Exercise Agile Chariot near Rawlins, Wyoming, April 30, 2023. Air Force planes — including the MC-130J and Warthog — have landed on stretches of highway in recent years in places like Michigan, Latvia, and Sweden. And the Air Force Special Operations Command has even explored modifications to the MC-130J to allow it to land in water.

Mandatory Credit: Matt Stone-USA TODAY SportsMay 4 (Reuters) - A series of horse deaths at Churchill Downs cast a shadow over the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby, which kicks off the prestigious Triple Crown thoroughbred racing series on Saturday. Churchill Downs on Thursday handed an indefinite suspension to Saffie Joseph, Jr., who trained two of the horses that died, Parents Pride and Chasing Artie. The suspension forced another derby entrant, Joseph-trained Lord Miles, to scratch from Saturday's race. The network camera was drawn to Pat Riley after Jimmy Butler’s 22-foot jumper landed like a kick to the collective groin of the Milwaukee Bucks late in Game 4 of Miami’s first-round playoff series upset. While Butler, soon to complete a 56-point masterpiece, pranced in full-throated fashion, there sat Riley, a gray-haired Buddha, arms folded across his suit jacket and tie, smiling without celebrating, blinking but not moving. By this point in a long basketball life, what has Riley not already seen that would make him compromise on his veneer of calculated, unflappable control? Circulating online, the clip was another striking visual to add to the Riley collection. From the 1966 national championship game in which a Texas Western squad dominated by Black players defeated his all-white Kentucky team to his tenured role as the Heat’s president, Riley has been tethered to basketball history of tectonic magnitude.
May 4 (Reuters) - Practical Move has been scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby due to an elevated temperature and will be replaced in the field by Cyclone Mischief, Churchill Downs said on Thursday. Practical Move was one of the Kentucky Derby favourites and had drawn the 10th post position for the 1-1/4-mile race that is the first leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. Cyclone Mischief, a bay colt trained by Dale Romans, will now enter the competition in the No. 20 post position following third-place finishes behind champion Forte in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Florida Derby (G1). A jockey for Cyclone Mischief has not yet been confirmed.
Only days before horse racing’s signature event, the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is looking into the recent deaths during training of four horses, including a colt who was scheduled to run in Saturday’s Derby. Wild on Ice, a 3-year-old who had three wins in five career starts and was in the Derby field, was euthanized after he was injured while training on the dirt track on Thursday, Churchill Downs said in a statement. Two horses trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. died suddenly for unknown reasons, the track said. “This is something that doesn’t happen,” Joseph said on Wednesday morning at his Churchill Downs barn. I run almost 4,000 horses and it’s never happened.

Tucker Carlson won concessions from Kevin McCarthy in a deal that made him House speaker, per his texts. McCarthy needed 218 votes to win his bid to become House speaker, giving him a small margin of error. The result was 14 rounds of votes that failed to produce a House speaker, making it the most contested speaker election in more than 150 years. Grossberg discussed some of the conversations between her and Carlson regarding McCarthy's House Speaker election in an interview with CNN on Tuesday night. On January 7, the House held its 15th vote for House Speaker.

Another world existed in Wellington, where the crowd was as boisterous as the South Beach tent but more patrician. On the other, the members of the private Polo Club at the National Polo Center drank rosé and Kentucky whiskey and sampled from a buffet with a caviar and blini station. The tables were filled with players, families and patrons who own enormous polo enterprises. “We are highly competitive,” said Daniel K. Walker, the chief executive of F&M Bank in California, and a respected polo patron who owns about 50 ponies that he and his sons use. (He referred to the cost of running a polo enterprise as his “money pit of choice.”)Mr. Walker was visiting a table with a raucous Argentine group.
New York CNN —Two 10-year-old children were found working at a Louisville McDonald’s restaurant — sometimes until 2 a.m. — the US Department of Labor said Tuesday. The revelation was part of an investigation into the child labor law violations in the Southeast. “Investigators from the department’s Wage and Hour Division found two 10-year-old workers at a Louisville McDonald’s restaurant among many violations of federal labor laws committed by three Kentucky McDonald’s franchise operators,” the release said. “Investigators also determined two 10-year-old children were employed – but not paid – and sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m.”The three franchisees face a combined $212,754 in civil money penalties for the child labor violations, the release said. “Under no circumstances should there ever be a 10-year-old child working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens and deep fryers.”
More than 300 minors — including two 10-year-olds who were unpaid — were found to be working in violation of federal labor laws at McDonald's franchise restaurants across Kentucky and other states, the U.S. Labor Department said this week. The news comes as Republican lawmakers have targeted child labor laws nationwide. Labor Department investigators discovered two 10-year-olds working unpaid as late as 2 a.m. at a McDonald's location in Louisville, Kentucky, operated by Louisville-based Bauer Food LLC, according to a Tuesday release. Last year, the Labor Department division found that 688 minors were employed illegally in hazardous positions in fiscal year 2022, the highest annual count since fiscal year 2011. Child labor laws exist to ensure that when young people work, the job does not jeopardize their health, well-being or education," said Garnett-Civils.
I appreciate the fact that he's going to now oversee the Louisville Metro Police Department," she said. "The DOJ had a completely separate responsibility from what we did in terms of our investigation in Louisville. A year after Taylor's death, the Justice Department opened an investigation into the Louisville police department to look at whether it had a "pattern or practice" of unconstitutional policing. The findings resulted in a "consent decree," an agreement between the Justice Department and the police department on steps the force has to take to rectify those findings. No officers were directly charged with killing Taylor under Kentucky law after Cameron's office presented the case to a grand jury.

REUTERS/Joseph WhiteLOUISVILLE, Kentucky, May 1 (Reuters) - Shutting down the assembly lines that build Super Duty pickup trucks at Ford Motor Co's (F.N) Kentucky Truck Plant is a multimillion-dollar action company managers try hard to avoid. As part of a new approach to stamping out quality demons, Kentucky Truck Plant manager Joseph Closurdo said he stopped production for as long as three days earlier this year. Slashing the tax that quality problems levy on Ford's profitability has become Job One for Chief Executive Jim Farley. We did not start shipping until we saw consistent delivery on those targets," Super Duty Chief Engineer Andrew Kernahan told Reuters.
“A celebrity versus the resources versus old school,” said Scott Jennings, a Republican operative in the state, summing up the contest between the three top contenders. “Cameron is the front-runner, but there’s no doubt this race has gotten close and remains fluid,” added Mr. Jennings, who like many other Republicans has remained neutral. Indeed, many of the major forces in Kentucky Republican politics are staying on the sidelines. For Republicans, part of the challenge of defeating Mr. Beshear has to do with the G.O.P. Yet that has kept Mr. Beshear from contentious showdowns with Republicans on hot-button issues, and has let him focus on using state resources to help repair infrastructure and improve the economy.
