The Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina is out with a new TV ad where he and his wife reveal that she had an abortion 30 years ago. Mark Robinson and his wife talk directly to the camera, revealing few details about the procedure beyond his telling viewers, "Thirty years ago, my wife and I made a very difficult decision. Robinson’s promise in his TV ad to keep the state’s abortion ban at 12 weeks appears to mark a shift from his previous remarks. "As governor, Mark Robinson will work to make North Carolina a destination for life by building a culture that does more to support women and families, including bolstering adoption, as well as foster and childcare." Robinson isn't the first GOP candidate this year to publicly say his wife had an abortion.

Hospitals have identified at least 30 newborns with what has been identified as “fetal fentanyl syndrome,” NBC News has learned. The infants had specific physical birth defects: cleft palate, unusually small heads, drooping eyelids, webbed toes and joints that weren’t fully developed. Birth defects linked to fentanyl by geneticists at Nemours Children’s Health in Wilmington, Del. But despite a rise in fentanyl misuse, even during pregnancy, there is no indication of a concurrent rise in birth defects. And most babies exposed to fentanyl in utero aren’t born with the defects that are hallmarks of the fetal fentanyl syndrome.

Washington CNN —Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe provided new details about the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Tuesday, delivering forceful testimony at a Senate hearing about the agency’s failures earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania. NEW YORK AP —Francine Pascal, a onetime soap opera writer whose “Sweet Valley High” novels and the ongoing adventures of twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and other teens captivated millions of young readers, has died at age 92. Pascal died Sunday, her publisher, Penguin Random House, said. Starting in 1983, Francine Pascal oversaw the completion of more than 150 “Sweet Valley High” stories with the help of others. “Sweet Valley is the essence of high school,” Pascal told People magazine in 1988. John Pascal died in 1981.
