Chang said the Biden-Xi meeting was a “good” one, pointing to their agreement to resume high-level military communications. “It should help reduce the tensions between the U.S. and China, and it should increase stability of Taiwan Strait,” Chang said. Washington has a security pact with Taiwan to deter any armed attack from Beijing and has stepped up its support for the island. Researchers at the institute looked at records of almost 18,000 incidents in which vehicles struck pedestrians. Tall front ends are common among full-size trucks and SUVs but they aren’t exclusive to very big vehicles. In general, vehicles with box-shaped front ends, even when they’re only medium height, are roughly 26% more likely to kill a pedestrian, according to the IIHS. NHTSA has also proposed adding pedestrian safety tests to its regimen of crash tests and other safety measurements for new vehicles. But automakers should also consider pedestrian safety in the design of their vehicles, IIHS president David Harkey said in a statement.

Motor vehicles with higher, more vertical front ends raise risks for pedestrians, according to a highway safety organization. But among vehicles with hood heights between 30 and 40 inches, a blunt, or more vertical, front end increases the risk to pedestrians. Vehicles with hood heights of more than 40 inches and blunt front ends angled at greater than 65 degrees were 44% more likely to cause fatalities. “There’s no functional benefit to these massive, blocky fronts.”While sloping front ends did not reduce the risk posed by vehicles with the tallest hoods, they did make a difference for vehicles with hood heights of 30 inches to 40 inches. There was a 25% increase in the risk of a fatality for vehicles with flat hoods — those with angles of 15 degrees or less — compared with vehicles with more sloping hoods.

☆ Zepbound: The newest obesity medication explained by an expert

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration approved the medication Zepbound last week to treat chronic obesity. Tirzepatide joins a similar medication called semaglutide that was also initially developed for diabetes treatment under the name Ozempic and has since been approved to treat obesity under the name Wegovy. Studies on both have shown high effectiveness in treating diabetes and obesity. The injectable medication Zepbound, manufactured by Eli Lilly, was approved by the FDA on November 8 to treat chronic obesity. Note that technically, the versions of the medicines someone needs for obesity treatment are Zepbound and Wegovy.

A two-day G7 foreign minister meeting held in Tokyo ended on Wednesday and mainly called for humanitarian pauses in the Israel-Hamas war to allow in aid and help the release of hostages. "China will resolutely counter any smear campaigns from external forces," the embassy said, adding it strongly protested against other countries' intentions to curb China with regards to Taiwan. President Tsai Ing-wen, of the democratically governed Taiwan island, said she would continue to work with G7 members toward a free and open Indo Pacific. Critical comments on Taiwan and Hong Kong have long riled Beijing, which considers such criticism as outside interference in its domestic affairs. Democratically governed Taiwan, which China considers as part of its territory, is the most sensitive issue.

CNN —The American Cancer Society has just updated their lung cancer screening guidelines in an effort to increase earlier detection. In women, breast cancer is more common than lung cancer, and in men, prostate cancer is more common than lung cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2023, there will be about 238,000 cases of lung cancer, and about 127,000 people will die from lung cancer. Wen: There are two main types of lung cancers, small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Those with first-degree relatives with lung cancer may also have a slightly higher risk of lung cancer themselves, though often this is hard to separate from the effect of second-hand smoke.

TAIPEI, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Taiwan's two main opposition parties said on Monday they will team up for parliamentary elections in January in a bid to win more seats but said more discussions are needed on a joint ticket for a presidential vote. The issue of China, which views self-ruled Taiwan as its territory, looms over the Jan. 13 parliamentary and presidential elections. It has stepped up military and political pressure to press the island to accept its sovereignty claim, which Taiwan rejects. China cut off a routine talks with Taiwan after President Tsai Ing-wen of the DPP took office in 2016. The two opposition parties have vowed to pursue dialogue with China on an equal and dignified basis and "restore peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait".
