Michael Bocchieri | Getty ImagesIn Europe, the battle between U.S. Big Tech companies and telecommunications firms has reached fever pitch. In May 2022, EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager said she would look into requiring Big Tech firms to pay for network costs. In South Korea, companies have similarly lobbied politicians to force "over-the-top" players like YouTube and Netflix to pay for network access. Tech companies, naturally, don't think they should pay for the privilege of sending their traffic to consumers. There's also the matter of why internet users pay their providers in the first place.

DETROIT – Shares of AutoNation , Group 1 Automotive and other automotive dealers rallied Thursday following strong third-quarter earnings and optimistic outlooks regarding consumer demand for new vehicles. Shares of AutoNation were up by as much as 8.2% after the company beat Wall Street's estimates on Thursday. Pricing remains strong, demand remains strong for our products, but we can't ignore what others are saying out there and what others are seeing out there," GM CFO Paul Jacobson told reporters Tuesday after reporting strong third-quarter earnings.

WASHINGTON — Whenever his aides are pressed about President Joe Biden’s political future, they’ll often point to one person as the true decider: his wife of 45 years, Jill Biden. Eager to introduce herself to Gina McCarthy, then the president’s chief climate adviser, she gathered some flowers from a White House garden and brought them to her office, according to White House aides. When the realization of her new security restrictions sunk in, Jill Biden told her staff she didn’t want to become isolated. Journeys outside the protective cocoon of the White House expose her to the vitriol coursing through the nation’s politics. “I don’t pay attention because I just don’t want to hear it,” Jill Biden said.

The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have all notched double-digit losses so far this year, putting the market on pace for its worst annual performance since the global financial crisis in 2008.

The Ethereum blockchain's mega-upgrade finally went live on Sept. 15, moving it to a less energy-intensive "proof of stake" (PoS) system with hardly a hiccup. Some crypto investors are now turning their attention to the next event that could shake up prices. It would allow validators, who have deposited ether tokens on the blockchain in exchange for a yield, to withdraw their staked coins, to hold or sell. Longer-term, though, the switch to PoS is expected to decrease the rate at which ether tokens are issued - potentially by up to 90% - which should drive up prices. Additionally, annual yields of 4.1% for staking ether tokens to validate transactions could prove tempting for investors.
Ron DeSantis has proposed an additional $1.1 billion in tax cuts presented weeks ahead of his November reelection bid. He promised to announce more tax cuts in the weeks ahead. Still, some of the tax cuts DeSantis is proposing come on items that families find essential and that they'd likely buy with or without a tax break. Florida is one of nine states that doesn't have a state income tax, and tax cuts are typically a major part of GOP platforms. DeSantis first previewed the proposed tax cuts during a press conference at the end of August.
Ukrainian soldiers sit on infantry fighting vehicles as they drive near Izyum, eastern Ukraine on September 16, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Such repeated threats have raised concerns Putin could at some point turn to small nuclear weapons or chemical warfare. It would change the face of war unlike anything since World War Two." Some military analysts have said Russia might also stage a nuclear incident at Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear power plant held by Russia but run by Ukrainian staff. His remarks were a reminder of the risks of escalation as the United States and its NATO allies aid Ukraine from a distance.

Kathy Hilton — dressed in a black Valentino gown, gold belt, and studded stilettos for a photo shoot — was begging for some attention. Ms. Hilton sighed and shrugged. Set amid a season of heavy legal dramas and lighter histrionic fare, Ms. Hilton’s oddball asides and eccentric behavior has sent the internet into paroxysms of adulation. “And the words they used … they said, ‘You’re quirky and refreshing.’” Her sunny face went dumbstruck. I’ve been asking my friends lately, ‘Do you think I’m quirky?’”
