Here's why you may get a smaller pay raise next year

The typical worker will get a 4.1% pay raise for 2025, down from 4.5% this year, according to a new poll by WTW, a consulting firm. Job market was 'unbelievably robust'Worker pay in 2021 and 2022 grew at its fastest pace in well over a decade amid an "unbelievably robust" job market, Wisper said. "I'm not sure I'll ever see that kind of job market in my lifetime again," Wisper said of 2021 and 2022. Still high relative to recent pastWhile the typical 4.1% projected raise is smaller than that during the last pay cycle, it's "still kind of high" relative to recent years, according to Wisper. For example, the median annual pay raise had largely hovered around 3% in the years after the 2008 financial crisis, she said.

The Justice Department’s in-house watchdog found no evidence of political interference in the reduction of a prison sentence proposed for the longtime Trump ally Roger Stone in 2020, attributing the stunning reversal to “ineffectual” leadership, according to a report released on Wednesday. The report concluded a four-year investigation into the decision by Attorney General William P. Barr in February 2020 to reduce Mr. Stone’s proposed sentence to about three years, after initially recommending seven to nine. The episode incited accusations of political interference and prompted four prosecutors in the case to resign. He denounced the sentencing recommendation as a “miscarriage of justice.”But the inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, concluded that Mr. Barr had argued that the more stringent sentence was unreasonably harsh before Mr. Trump expressed those sentiments. Mr. Barr was blindsided by a subordinate who had led him to believe the department would request a lesser prison term, Mr. Horowitz wrote.

Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald.
