REUTERS/Leonardo Fernandez ViloriaCARACAS, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel group said on Saturday they will resume peace talks in Mexico next month, overcoming a recent impasse after the government recently declared and then called off a bilateral ceasefire. There was a first cycle of talks last year in Caracas to end the guerrillas' part in nearly six decades of war. The about-face on the ceasefire came after ELN said it had not agreed to it. "In said cycle, the issue of society's participation in peace building will be addressed. Colombia and the ELN said they would jointly examine progress in implementing agreements reached during the first cycle of talks and agreed to keep communication channels open even when not at the negotiating table.
But there's a glaring catch to my support for pay transparency: I haven't actually practiced it in my own life. To find out why, I decided to commemorate the dawning age of salary transparency by telling pretty much everyone in my life what I earn. Norway responded to pay transparency with yet another level of transparency, and that brought down the level of snooping.. Thanks to its nationwide experiment, Norway has been fertile ground for scholars trying to measure the consequences of extreme pay transparency. But I do believe that as more states implement pay-disclosure laws — and as Gen Z increasingly comes to dominate the workforce — salary transparency is going to become the new norm.
In exchange for as little as a few thousand dollars in contributions to the nonprofit, these people received easy access to events where Supreme Court justices would be. Supreme Court Historical society trustee Jay Sekulow, center, represented President Trump during the latter's impeachment trial in 2020. Anti-abortion advocates cheer in front of the Supreme Court after the decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores was announced in 2014. Alito did not respond to a request for comment on his involvement in the Supreme Court Historical Society. Supreme Court justices, though, aren't even required to stay within those weak guardrails because no code of ethics governs justices' behavior.
"It always rains a lot here, it's very cold and it's January and it feels like summer," said Bilbao resident Eusebio Folgeira, 81. French tourist Joana Host said: "It's like nice weather for biking but we know it's like the planet is burning. Scientists have not yet analysed the specific ways in which climate change affected the recent high temperatures, but January's warm weather spell fits into the longer-term trend of rising temperatures due to human-caused climate change. "The record-breaking heat across Europe over the new year was made more likely to happen by human-caused climate change, just as climate change is now making every heatwave more likely and hotter," said Dr Friederike Otto, climate scientist at Imperial College London. French national weather agency Meteo France attributed the anomalous temperatures to a mass of warm air moving to Europe from subtropical zones.
Most people are familiar with the scourge of the résumé gap. Young entrants to the workforce are leading a new conversation about the workplace, and the long-scorned résumé gap is no exception. Instead of viewing it as a negative, many Gen Zers are arguing that career breaks are positive and forcing employers to reconsider their preconceived notions about the résumé gap. The pesky résumé gapWhile job candidates have papered over résumé gaps for years, taking a break during the long march of a career is not uncommon. For those looking at working well into their 70s, a career gap, or two, simply makes sense.
Layoffs are getting loud, and workers are stressing out. Roughly 1 in 3 U.S. workers, 31%, say they're concerned their company is planning budget cuts or layoffs, according to a recent LinkedIn Workforce Confidence survey, which includes data from 21,000-plus professionals from September to December. Other lines of work, like business admin, policing, social work and accounting, are also necessary to keep daily life running. Anders notes that these workers can be considered society's problem solvers: "Think of them as a recession's essential workers." As workers lose confidence in their job security, we could see fewer people quitting in droves each month, economists say.
The path to raising successful kids can seem nebulous. Here are three things parents of highly successful kids have in common. But Pryor mocked the notion that the 60,000-member professional organization was working "in the shadows" to reshape the courts. He also took aim at liberal commentators who frequently criticize the Federalist Society. He also took issue with criticism of society's role in the judicial nomination process. Leonard Leo, a long-time conservative legal activist, while serving as a Federalist Society executive helped compile a list of potential U.S. Supreme Court nominees that Trump drew from during his tenure. "Are there members of the Federalist Society who are involved in that process?

Union for Bread Producers Chairman Cihan Kolivar made the comments to broadcaster Haberturk on Monday as he spoke about the rising price of bread and Turkey's soaring inflation. "Bread is the staple food for stupid societies. I speak scientifically, I am not making it up - per capita consumption is 210 kilos in Turkey; and 45-50 kilos in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Japan," Kolivar said. Critics blame Turkey's economic ills on Erdogan's unorthodox monetary policies, which he says are aimed at boosting exports, investment and jobs. "In addition to insulting our nation and bread, this person's statements show that he is an element of the politics of hostility, the politics of hatred," Celik said.

The runoff shaped up as a close contest between President Jair Bolsonaro and his political nemesis, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. There were multiple reports of what critics said appeared attempts to suppress the turnout of likely da Silva voters. Most opinion polls gave a lead to da Silva, universally known as Lula, though political analysts agreed the race grew increasingly tight in recent weeks. But while da Silva topped the Oct. 2 first-round elections with 48% of the vote, Bolsonaro was a strong second at 43%, showing opinion polls significantly underestimated his popularity. "If da Silva wins, we're going to have a problem," said Pedro Correia, 40, who joined his wife and two children in Copacabana.
LONDON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Having hiked mortgage rates after political turmoil drove up the cost of borrowing, British banks are now cutting home loan prices, albeit slowly, as markets calm since Liz Truss's government collapsed and Rishi Sunak took power. But as markets have stabilised and borrowing costs have fallen, the trickle of mortgage rate cuts has lagged behind. By contrast, average rates on two-year and five-year fixed-rate mortgages have fallen just 0.16 percentage points, Moneyfacts data shows. Reuters GraphicsFIXED RATESMortgage brokers say fixed-rate mortgage rates typically lag changes in swap rates, a trend which could be exacerbated this time as lenders focus on reintroducing products. Five-year mortgage rates have followed a similar pattern, Moneyfacts data shows.
For good.”R&B superstar Blige said she lost aunts and other family members to breast, cervical and lung cancer. She has promoted breast cancer screening in the past, especially among Black women who are disproportionately affected, through the Black Women’s Health Imperative. First lady Jill Biden, right, holds hands with singer Mary J. Blige during an event to launch the American Cancer Society's national roundtables on breast and cervical cancer in the State Dining Room of the White House, on Monday. Patrick Semansky / APBlige blamed misconceptions about mammograms among Black women and “the practice of not wanting other people in our business” for disparities in breast cancer outcomes between Blacks and whites. “She has a rock-hard mass in her breast,” Gore said.
So why aren't developers building more affordable housing? And more recently, the Biden Administration's 2023 budget includes a proposal for $25 billion for Grants for Affordable Housing Production. "Nuveen so far has $3.5 billion in assets under management and has 120 actual affordable housing properties across the country in 25 states," West says about the company's affordable housing portfolio. "Inflation has a direct, immediate effect on the cost of building affordable housing. Research shows that the shortage of affordable housing costs the American economy about $2 trillion a year in lower wages and productivity.
Oct 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ.N) therapy for treating a type of multiple myeloma, the company said on Tuesday, giving another treatment option to patients with the incurable blood cancer. Tecvayli is a bispecific antibody, which is engineered to redirect body's immune system to recognize and kill cancer cells. It is the first drug of its class to be approved for multiple myeloma. The Nov. 6-18 summit in Sharm el-Sheikh is the first annual U.N. climate conference to be held after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. A petition led by 12 Egypt-focussed rights groups has called on Egypt to address restrictions on civil society, saying "effective climate action is not possible without open civic space". "Certainly we're very alive to the fact that Sharm el-Sheikh is an enclosed space, very controlled, very curated," she said.
Trump was deposed at Mar-a-Lago on Wednesday in writer E. Jean Carroll's 2019 rape defamation suit. In his first response, Trump 'truthed' two clips from the conservative video platform Rumble. Without commenting, Trump 'truthed' out a pair of Rumble clips that combined snippets of old interview footage of Carroll. The misleadingly edited, minute-long clips use Carroll's out-of-context remarks to imply she fantasizes about rape and did not take her own accusations against Trump seriously. Carroll has accused Trump of raping her in the mid-'90s in the fitting room of a Manhattan Bergdorf Goodman store.

For meteorologist Joseph Trujillo, the right translation is more than a language issue, especially when it comes to weather-related warnings. A NOAA assessment revealed a lack of weather-related resources in the Spanish language that could have helped communities take action to save lives. But those linguistic differences can bring great challenges when translating emergency information, such as weather alerts, for all Hispanic people. They designed a new list of categories that better reflect the risk of climate emergencies in simpler terms: minimum, low, moderate, high and extreme. That first experience led him to pursue meteorology and his investigative work, which he presented to the National Weather Service.

Media mogul Jann Wenner told Joe Rogan that he believes people earning $20,000 should pay no tax. Studies show that having structure and familiar rituals teaches kids how to constructively manage themselves and their environment. As a physician who studies early brain development, I've found one surprising factor that contributes to increased resilience at a young age: creating "nurturing routines." When children do things in a similar way and at a similar time, over and over, they know what to expect. And as they begin to do parts of their routine with less supervision, they will grow more independent and confident. Explaining the why behind a routine helps kids learn what's expected of them and feel the positive impact of completing the routine.
