Cinven this month signed an accord with GIC, Singapore's sovereign fund, and another two investors to purchase from them 140 million euros of Tier2 Eurovita bonds, the source added. Cinven, which acquired Eurovita in 2017, also launched a tender offer to buy back another 20 million euros of bonds from investors including Italian financial institutions, so that only around 9 million remain outstanding, the source said. Italian insurance authorities placed Eurovita under special administration this year, the first time they have taken such a step, after rising rates blew a hole in the life insurer's cash reserves. Instead, Cinven was asked to carry out the debt buyback and cancel the bonds to support a solvent liquidation, one of the people added. Like other life insurers, especially those relying on banks to sell products, Eurovita was hit by early redemptions once rates started rising and savers sought better returns.

The Fed's massive quantitative tightening campaign has had limited effect on the market. That's as private sector participants have taken over its role in the Treasury market. These balance sheet reduction efforts are more commonly known as quantitative tightening, and are a strategy deployed by the central bank to drain excess liquidity from markets. While the central bank isn't selling bonds outright, running off its balance sheet has a similar effect of reducing liquidity by removing a large buyer from the market. AdvertisementAdvertisementBut since its June 2022 implementation, QT has fueled market concern, given the history of previous balance sheet reductions.

China's capital exodus is among the worst seen by emerging markets, said Robin Brooks, chief economist at IIF. That's as global investors have grown wary of autocratic regimes, he tweeted on Sunday. "The change in global capital flows is seismic. "But China has now seen consistent and large outflows for the past 18 months, as investors grow wary of autocracies." Global markets look at China in a new light," Brooks said in a separate X post.

The firm has recently touted its data center investments amid the artificial intelligence boom. Blackstone's push into data centers comes with its own set of challenges and questions. "You might not own apartment buildings in 10 years, but the largest data center company in the world." Meghji said in the company's video that interest from data center users in QTS data centers had doubled "since ChatGPT came out." Gerber said he had recently discussed data center investments with Blackstone representatives and has confidence in the strategy.

That's as the debt binge may pressure bank reserves, economists at the St. Louis Fed wrote. The Treasury has issued $1 trillion in T-bills since June, and another $600 billion is expected by year's end. But a prior quantitative tightening campaign saw a drop in bank reserves, forcing the Fed to do an about-face in 2019 and buy T-bills. "Although there are currently ample reserves, there is some lower level of reserves that can cause stress in financial markets," the St. Louis Fed economists wrote in a paper. While the St. Louis Fed's note estimated that $2 trillion in banking reserves could be the optimal level, the data are signaling higher levels.

The private fund industry manages $20 trillion in assets. They would also require funds to perform annual audits. "Private fund advisers, through the funds they manage, touch so much of our economy," he said at the time. The rule would require fund managers to disclose so-called "side letters" - an industry practice through which funds can offer some investors special terms - when they are financially material. Earlier, the proposed rules would require investors and private funds to re-write all their contracts.

Enes EvrenInvestors piled into Series I bonds amid record yields, and some are now eyeing an exit for higher-interest alternatives. After reaching 9.62% annual interest in May 2022, I bond yields have declined with falling inflation, reaching 4.3% interest for new purchases from May through October. However, the U.S. Department of the Treasury still needs two months of CPI readings before the next I bond rate change. "It's falling back in line with I bond inflation rates we had before the pandemic," said Ken Tumin, founder and editor of DepositAccounts.com. While longer-term investors may like the current 0.9% fixed rate portion of I bond yields, short-term investors may prefer higher-paying alternatives.

Added to valuations from December, major REITs, which build, own and operate property assets, have marked down office portfolios by roughly a tenth or less over the past year. Dexus shares have fallen 28% since 2022, while Charter Hall has nearly halved. "Buyers aren't willing to pay the price from the last valuations," said Winston Sammut, an investment manager at Sequoia Financial Group and a former executive at Charter Hall. Dexus and Charter Hall did not respond to requests for comment. "We're looking to see whether the fund managers, the Charter Halls, the Centurias, the Dexus are also getting large redemptions."

Ark Invest has marked down its Twitter valuation by 47% since it was taken over by Elon Musk, the Wall Street Journal reported. Musk had recently tweeted that Twitter's advertising revenue has been cut in half since he took over the company. Given Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion late last year, the markdown would put the company's current valuation at about $23 billion, based on Ark's estimate. "We're still negative cash flow, due to ~50% drop in advertising revenue plus heavy debt load," Musk said of Twitter on Twitter. We also think that longer term, Elon and team are very serious that they're going to turn this into an everything app," Wood said.

Charter Hall did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. On its website Charter Hall said the fund would "only sell assets for prices that reflect fair value and given the lower sales volumes in the office investment markets, sales have proved challenging". Another REIT and Australia's largest office landlord Dexus (DXS.AX) last month sold a premium downtown Sydney office block for a 17% discount on a valuation made six months earlier. The Australian and U.S. REIT benchmark indexes are down roughly a fifth since highs at the end of 2021. But unlisted fund valuations have declined more slowly, creating an incentive for investors to pull money out while a chunky premium over listed equivalents remains, according to fund managers with investments in REITs.

WHAT ARE MONEY MARKET FUNDS? All the major asset managers and bank groups, including BlackRock, Vanguard, Fidelity and Goldman Sachs offer money market funds. The panic was reminiscent of 2008 when a run on money market funds threatened to freeze up global markets and prompted the government to backstop the sector. The agency has made changes to primarily address concerns about “prime” and tax-exempt money market funds, which are particularly susceptible to runs in times of stress. In addition, some money market funds would be required to impose a discretionary liquidity fee if the fund’s board deems it’s necessary.

Money market funds saw massive outflows in March 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the U.S. government to intervene to stabilize them. The panic was reminiscent of 2008 when a run on money market funds threatened to freeze up global markets and prompted the government to backstop the sector. Critics have said money market funds, which are a key source of short-term corporate and municipal funding, now enjoy an implicit government guarantee. In December 2021, the SEC proposed new liquidity requirements for money market funds, as well as scrapping redemption fees and restrictions. "I believe that liquidity fees, compared with swing pricing, offer many of the same benefits and fewer of the operational burdens."

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - The European Union's banking watchdog urged stablecoin issuers on Wednesday to voluntarily comply with 'guiding principles' on managing risks and protecting consumers ahead of mandatory rules due in a year's time. The European Banking Authority (EBA) published on Wednesday for public consultation its first batch of measures to flesh out MiCAR requirements for issuing a stablecoin that would come into force on June 30, 2024. Separately the EU's European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) set out draft rules for so-called crypto asset service providers (CASPs) who trade cryptocurrencies. EBA will issue a second batch of draft rules in October that focus on capital requirements for stablecoin issuers, and how firms should deal with stablecoin redemptions in stressed markets. The SEC is expected to vote on new rules for money-market funds Wednesday. Increase in liquidity requirements Most money market funds invest exclusively in cash or government securities. Some, known as "prime" money market funds, also invest in commercial paper. All are subject to liquidity requirements (some assets have to be readily convertible to cash), including levels of daily and weekly liquidity requirements. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), an industry trade group, wrote to the SEC, expressing "substantial concerns" about the liquidity requirements.
