United Airlines "briefly" grounded its Airbus A321neos due to a peculiar rule. It needed an exemption from requirements flight crew be able to turn off "No Smoking" signs. United received an exemption for Boeing jets in 2020, but ordered the A321neos a year later. The FAA told BI it was "working to quickly resolve a non-safety issue that United Airlines discovered with some of its Airbus A321neo aircraft." Around four hours after those statements, a United spokesperson said the FAA gave it permission to keep operating the jets while it evaluates the exemption request.

A nasty storm with 60 mph winds raked parts of the Northeast on Tuesday creating dangerous conditions on the road and snarling airports. More than 1,200 flights were cancelled before noon, mostly along the East Coast, but that is likely to spread west as the day goes on. NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — A small airplane collided with a vehicle as it made an emergency landing on Interstate 75 in southwest Florida on Friday afternoon, authorities said. The crash landing happened near the Pine Ridge Road exit in Collier County, just north of where the interstate heads east toward Fort Lauderdale along what is known as Alligator Alley. The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that the southbound lanes were closed and advised motorists to seek alternate routes. A photo captured by the Florida Department of Transportation showed a huge plume of black smoke rising from the plane. It was not immediately known if anyone was injured.

Most U.S. adults believe that air travel is generally safe in the U.S., despite some doubts about whether aircraft are being properly maintained and remain free from structural problems. About 7 in 10 U.S. adults say planes are a “very” or “somewhat” safe method of travel, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Slightly fewer than half — 45% — have “a great deal” of confidence in pilots' training, while 38% say that about air traffic controllers. The snowplow named for Taylor Swift was the runaway winner of Minnesota’s fourth annual Name a Snowplow contest, with eight new names announced Tuesday. Walz thanked the state’s snowplow drivers for braving dangerous conditions, working 12-hour shifts and clearing 200 miles (322 kilometers) or more at a time. The Name a Snowplow contest is a way to personalize both the massive trucks and the people who drive them. The agency knew officials in Scotland had named snowplows for years and decided a similar effort in Minnesota might draw attention to their winter work, Meyer said. The response in the first year of the contest was overwhelming, with about 24,000 submissions and 122,000 votes cast. “There's a natural infatuation with (snowplows),” said Kristine Bustos-Mihelcic, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Transportation. I moved to Helsinki without ever visiting Finland because I read that it was the happiest place on earth . Finnish people don't wear shoes in the officeWhile it's not unusual to take off your shoes before entering someone's house, most Finnish offices also have a no-shoe policy. Some offices will have "indoor shoes," but for the most part, colleagues will wear socks. Reindeer meat tasted good to me, very tender and rich earthy flavor. I see reindeer meat mostly sold in local markets throughout the city.

Alaska Airlines plans to resume flights with its Max 9s on Friday, and United aims to follow suit on Sunday. United Airlines made similar similar findings. Travelers returned to the Boeing 737 Max 8 after two of them crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people. In that case, Boeing had to redesign an automated flight-control system before the FAA would let Max 8s and Max 9s resume flying after a 20-month grounding. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A proposed high-speed passenger train between Las Vegas and Southern California got another boost on Tuesday with Biden administration approval to issue $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds for the $12 billion project. The announcement benefiting the Brightline West project followed a $3 billion U.S. Department of Transportation grant in December and government authorization in 2020 for the company to sell $1 billion in similar bonds. "We appreciate the confidence placed in us by DOT and are ready to get to work,” Brightline founder and Chairman Wes Edens said in a statement. The 218-mile (351-kilometer) Brightline West project aims to whisk passengers at 186 mph (300 kph) or more in electric trains on new tracks along the Interstate 15 corridor — cutting in half a four-hour freeway trip between Las Vegas and suburban San Bernardino County near Los Angeles. No date has been announced for work to start, but officials have said it might be operational by the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
