Three Israeli hostages were rescued from his family’s building on June 8. “Hamas only trusts Hamas when it comes to those very sensitive issues such as Israeli hostages,” he said. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office told CNN she was held by the Abu Nar family but did not provide further details. Three relatives of Abu Nar also posted on social media announcing he had been killed by Israeli forces that day. Many locals questioned why so many Palestinians had to die for the Israeli forces to rescue just four hostages.

In the mid-1990s the right was already moving toward climate change denial. The characters’ silence is louder at a time when in real life many Republican leaders continue to deny climate change is a problem. In a 2022 survey, only 23% of Republicans thought climate change was a major threat.

The legal proceedings are themselves on trial, on hold or in the process of being dismissed. More strikingly, the case Mr. Trump would have made for himself in his acceptance speech as a witness, a martyr to serial partisan persecution, has suddenly been transcended. It was shoved aside by the would-be assassin’s bullet, which came within an inch of its target, drawing blood but not brain. The scene instantly recalled worse American tragedies — the assassinations of John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, the Rev. Never Trumpers have frequently accused Mr. Trump of lacking courage — sometimes because he has never faced death on the battlefield.

Trump’s social-media posts and interviews since the shooting have stressed the need for national unity, but unity was not his first impulse. In the canon of Trump books and speeches, “fight” is a constant byword, but it has meant radically different things in different contexts. In scripted moments meant to convey suitably presidential sensibilities, Trump is fighting for others — whether the American people or those the nation has forgotten. In moments of political or legal crisis, when Trump feels besieged, his call to “fight” becomes personal. It is not a fight for others, but a battle for himself, one in which the people are enlisted in Trump’s wars, persuaded that his causes are their own.

Tokyo CNN —America’s two most powerful allies in the Pacific are taking their defense ties to new heights amid increasing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region and North Korean threats, Japan’s top general said Thursday. Yoshida called on Japan, South Korea and the United States to “demonstrate our strong unity domestically and globally to ensure regional peace and stability.”But bilateral cooperation between Japan and South Korea is the most noteworthy result of this week’s meeting in Tokyo. Kim said he and Yoshida “share a lot of the same thoughts,” an acknowledgment of the mutual perspective on the regional threat posed by China and North Korea. Last month, Japan and South Korea joined the US in the inaugural Freedom Edge in the Pacific, a military exercise that focused on ballistic missile and air defense, anti-submarine warfare and more. “Domestic politics remain complicated in Seoul and Tokyo, but policymakers and military professionals want to lock in coordinated responses to North Korea, Russia, and China before any major political changes occur in Washington,” Easley said.

The night Mitt Romney accepted the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, he was introduced by party stalwarts like Newt Gingrich and Jeb Bush. In 2004, George W. Bush went with Gov. Tonight, former President Donald Trump will be preceded by Kid Rock, Hulk Hogan and the chief executive of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It is less a display of political lineage than an unapologetic show of masculine kitsch. The lineup suggests a swing back to the bellicose political style that defined Trump’s rise.

As a result, international buyers are pulling out. This comes as both the average ($780,300) and median ($475,000) purchase prices were the highest the NAR ever recorded for foreign buyers. "Therefore, it's not surprising to see a pullback in U.S. home sales from foreign buyers." International buyers tend to pull back during times of political uncertainty. It is unlikely sales from foreign buyers will improve in the coming year unless several factors, both economic and political, improve.

Vance did his initial walk-through of the Republican National Convention stage this week after he was named Donald J. Trump’s running mate, the Ohio senator was joined not just by aides and event organizers. He was accompanied by a man who had pushed behind the scenes as hard as almost anyone to put him on the ticket in the first place: Donald Trump Jr. When they each deliver a prime-time address on Wednesday night, the moment will mark not only Mr. Vance’s national debut but the unquestioned arrival of Donald Trump Jr. as a political force to be reckoned with in his own right. The younger Mr. Trump is now the rarest of political creatures: a top confidant not only to the Republican presidential nominee but also the vice-presidential nominee. Soon after Mr. Vance got the call from the former president that he would be on the ticket, one of the first outbound calls he made was to the younger Mr. Trump to thank him for his help, according to a person with knowledge of the call.

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. To the Editor:Re “Judge Voids Case About Documents That Trump Held” (front page, July 16):It is rare that I read a news article that I describe as breathtaking, but Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of Donald Trump’s classified documents case falls into this rare category. I may have been naïve in my belief that in the U.S. justice system, judges were in place to decide cases based on evidence and arguments before the court. The ruling highlights that individual judges are no longer arbiters but rather extensions of political parties. Steve ReichShort Hills, N.J.To the Editor:The timing of Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of the classified documents case — right before the Republican convention — is so cynical and political. Washington CNN —President Joe Biden was bracing for a week of political onslaught. When gunshots rang out at a Donald Trump political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Saturday evening, much of that appeared to change. He also addressed the nation from the Oval Office, calling for a lowering of the political temperature. “I think it should,” one close Biden ally told CNN when asked if that may end up being a result of Saturday’s attack. But those expected discussions were quickly eclipsed by the response to the assassination attempt on Biden’s predecessor and political opponent.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

A whole generation of political professionals are so enamored of “The West Wing,” Mr. Sorkin’s show about the travails of White House occupants, that they now suffer from what I think of as Terminal West Wing Brain. It depicts America as a place that is divided but that yearns for consensus, for the good of the country. Jed Bartlet, the fictional Democratic president, is often reaching across the aisle to a wrongheaded but often well-meaning Republican. Voters say they want Americans to be unified, but Republicans mean they want everyone to be a Republican, and Democrats want everyone to be a Democrat. Bipartisan cooperation requires a shared idea of reality that exists in “The West Wing” but not in the real world.
