President Joe Biden delivers remarks during the CNN Presidential Debate at the CNN Studios on June 27, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. Many of the Democratic Party's top fundraisers are privately sounding the alarm after President Joe Biden's disappointing debate performance Thursday against Republican former President Donald Trump. CNBC began hearing from worried Democratic campaign donors and fundraisers less than 20 minutes into the 90-minute debate hosted by CNN. "Game over," said a longtime Democratic campaign advisor, who has been raising money for congressional leaders for over a decade and helped raise money for Biden's 2020 White House bid. Biden's campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu told NBC News this was because the president had a cold.

"I just really wanted a Tesla because it's something my ex wouldn't let me [have], and I regret buying that full price," the 34-year-old tells CNBC Make It. It wasn't necessarily that she couldn't afford the car or the approximate $1,000 a month she puts toward the loan. But in retrospect, she says buying a shiny new car wasn't a very smart investment. Gail Collins: Not to be obvious or anything, Bret, but do you have any predictions about the big debate tonight? Bret Stephens: No predictions, just the wish that both candidates deliver roughly the same performances they put in four years ago: a coherent Joe Biden and an unhinged Donald Trump. But here’s my question for you: If Biden’s performance is disastrous, will you join me in calling for Democrats to find a new nominee? Gail: It’d have to be pretty super disastrous, Bret. My own opinion on the matter makes no sense whatsoever — at least not the opinion that A.I. I checked the other day after seeing a social media post that described me as not approving of trans people. McWhorter also suggested other gender-neutral pronouns, including ‘que, ‘s/he, and ‘one.’”Hmm, not a word of that is true. I wouldn’t be caught dead endorsing the ungainly, unpronounceable “s/he” or the hopelessly wooden “one,” and God knows what “que” is. Plus, “they” had already been used in a singular, gender-neutral way (“Each student has an hour to complete their test”) for several centuries.

Brianna Villafane was in Lower Manhattan protesting police violence in the summer of 2020, when officers charged into the crowd. One of them gripped her hair and yanked her to the ground. “I felt someone on top of me and it was hard to breathe,” she said. Ms. Villafane received a letter from the oversight agency about its conclusions. The next step would be a disciplinary trial overseen by the New York Police Department, during which prosecutors from the oversight agency would present evidence and question the officer in a public forum.

You know you’ve touched a nerve with progressive activists when they tell you not just that you’re wrong but that you’re on the other side. Such is the fate of any old-school liberal or mainstream Democrat who deviates from progressive dogma. New York magazine’s liberal political columnist Jonathan Chait was accused of lending “legitimacy to a reactionary moral panic” for critiquing political correctness. But the goal and the effect is to narrow the focus of acceptable discourse by Democrats and their allies. If liberals are denounced for “punching left” when they express a reasonable difference of opinion, potentially winning ideas are banished.
