When Time’s ‘Man of the Year’ Meant Something
  + stars: | 2022-12-03 | by ( Lance Morrow | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Time magazine’s Man of the Year selection once was a bigger deal. During my 40-year career at Time, I wrote seven Man of the Year cover stories. It was called Man of the Year in those days but Time by no means excluded women from consideration. In 1976 I did the Women of the Year story about outstanding women in various fields. A man wouldn’t get that assignment today.
November marks Native American Heritage Month, and the following 10 LGBTQ+ Indigenous trailblazers are bringing important representation to TV, challenging traditional gender expectations at powwows and elevating issues affecting Indigenous people, such as the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Tom Williams / CQ Roll Call via AP fileRep. Sharice Davids, a member of the Ho-Chunk nation, became the first LGBTQ Native American elected to Congress and one of the first Native American women to serve in Congress after winning her race for Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District in 2018. Scott, of Aurora, Colorado, who uses she and they pronouns, leverages her platform to highlight issues affecting the queer Indigenous community. “I just want to flood the industry with Indigenous people, Indigenous models, Indigenous stories, and Indigenous designers.”Kali Reis (KO)Kali Reis, who is Seaconke Wampanaak and Cape Verdean, is a trailblazing Indigenous two-spirit athlete who wears many hats. Native American Heritage Month invites non-Native folks in joining us in recognizing our histories and celebrating our communities.
As part of the honor, Marie, whose pronouns are they/she, was invited to attend Out Magazine’s gala in New York. Although the majority of American women wear sizes 14 or above, Marie said, many stores stock only sizes 12 and under. “Apparently the dress that I love from the Emmys this year was in shambles because everyone kept stepping on Lizzo’s train,” Marie said. “So she [the manager] said, ‘But we found one that’s really similar.’"Marie said Lizzo's manager offered them the magenta tulle gown that was custom-made for Lizzo’s 2019 American Music Awards performance. “You can send me a paper bag and say Lizzo wore this at a photo shoot and I would have worn it on the red carpet at that point,” Marie said.
WASHINGTON — “Here Comes the Bride” will be heard at the White House very soon. Stewart McLaurin, president of the historical association, said special occasions at the White House aren’t soon forgotten. “It’s like being part of the American fabric.”A White House wedding is no guarantee of a lasting marriage. Lynda Johnson Robb said she never thought about a White House wedding, but circumstances practically dictated that she and Marine Capt. Red is her signature color and December nuptials meant the White House was already decorated for Christmas.
Rappers 21 Savage (left) and Drake (right) are being sued by Vogue magazine’s publisher Condé Nast. Rappers Drake and 21 Savage have released a series of fake media appearances—a fake NPR “Tiny Desk” concert; a fake interview with Howard Stern; a fake musical performance on “Saturday Night Live”; a fake Vogue cover—to promote their new album “Her Loss.”Fans have called it entertaining. Vogue magazine, however, has sued.
The publisher of Vogue magazine has sued rappers Drake and 21 Savage for promoting their new album using a fake Vogue cover and the magazine’s name without authorization, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday. And none of it has been authorized by Condé Nast,” the publisher alleges in its lawsuit. “Vogue magazine and its Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour have had no involvement in Her Loss or its promotion, and have not endorsed it in any way.”A representative for Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Graham, declined comment. Their “deceptive campaign” has caused unmistakable confusion over the veracity of the magazine cover and “underscores the tremendous value that a cover feature in Vogue magazine carries,” the lawsuit stated. The distribution of a fake Vogue cover is among several spoofs the rappers rolled out in support of their album release.
It and other publications rightly called it out for mocking the LGBTQ community. Republicans are belittling knowledge that they find threatening to the status quo that gives the lives of social conservatives meaning. To play on the words of Ben Shapiro, I call this movement the “feelings over facts” orientation, and it has been positioned as a bulwark against indoctrination by disciplines that focus on race, gender and art. This is the not-so-subtle implication of the mailer supporting DeSantis. For everyone who doesn’t believe gender studies is threatening, the student in the photo the mailer used is just a new nonbinary college graduate.
LOS ANGELES — Chris Evans may have put down Captain America’s shield but he’s got a new badge of honor: he’s been named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Evans, who for nearly a decade played Captain America in Marvel’s sprawling superhero films, takes the baton from another Avenger, Paul Rudd. “It’s ripe for harassment.”Among those likely to heckle him are co-stars and previous Sexiest Man Alive winners like Rudd, Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth. Evans’ first film role came in 2000′s “The New Comers” and he played superhero Johnny Storm in two “Fantastic Four” films released in 2005 and 2007. “It’s something that as I become old and saggy I can look back on and say ‘I remember then…’” Evans said.
Nov 7 (Reuters) - “Captain America” actor Chris Evans was named People Magazine’s "sexiest man alive" for 2022 on Monday, following his Marvel co-star Paul Rudd having the title in 2021. “My mom will be so happy,” Evans told People in an interview. Despite his many Hollywood accolades, the “Gray Man” star has aspirations outside of acting, which include marriage and fatherhood. Evans said, “That’s absolutely something I want.”“Some things you want just for you, or just for my family and my friends. CNN —People magazine has crowned actor Chris Evans this year’s Sexiest Man Alive. The former “Captain America” star, who couldn’t appear on the show, was instead congratulated by Johnson on the set of their movie, “Red One.”“It means a lot coming from a former Sexiest Man Alive,” Evans tells Johnson in the video. Johnson, a 2016 Sexiest Man cover star, however, goes on to correct him: “I never give the title up….I’m Sexiest Man Alive in perpetuity, which means for life.”Evans, confused, tries to get clarification, but Johnson stops him. We’re sharing it!”Evans agrees and the two sexiest men alive live, apparently, happily ever after. But not before Johnson prompts his co-star to say something “sexy” into the camera and Evans obliges.
An image is circulating online purporting to show the October cover of the German satirical magazine ‘Titanic’ featuring a caricature of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy with text reading “eternal appetite” is fabricated. No such cover was published by the outlet, the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief confirmed to Reuters. The image shows the Titanic logo in red on the top left corner and a caricature of Zelensky centered across the purported cover. Julia Mateus, Editor-in-Chief of Titanic magazine confirmed to Reuters that the pictured cover was not an official Titanic cover. The outlet posted the official cover of the October edition via Twitter on Sept. 30 (here).
CNN —Anne Hathaway chooses to look at the troubling period after her Academy Award win almost a decade ago as an “opportunity” to learn. Hathaway won a flood of awards for her performance that year, including a Golden Globe and a BAFTA and was considered a heavy favorite for the Oscar. “There is a difference between existence and behavior,” Hathaway added. And if you do, you’re not where it’s at.”She concluded on a positive note, pointing out how hatred is a learned behavior that can be unlearned and changed. Period,” Hathaway said.
The doctor sent along the questions and answers and received a resounding “no” from the PR official: “We ask that you do not comment to the NY Times at this time.”“They’re censoring me,” the doctor told CNN. Even when they are permitted to speak about abortion as private citizens, these doctors say, their employers have made it clear that they would prefer the doctors not talk at all, and so they have hesitated to speak up. UT Southwestern isn’t the only medical center that has been hesitant to allow their doctors to speak with the media. About 10 hospitals and medical practices said no, Wade told CNN. And I thought we would use our position as a respected women’s health institution to continue to educate about the impact these laws have on women’s health,” she told CNN.
The advice columnist E. Jean Carroll accused President Trump of sexually assaulting her in the mid-1990s in her forthcoming book. Mr. Trump, in a statement, emphatically denied the incident. It should be sold in the fiction section.”[President Trump called E. Jean Carroll a liar. In her book, Ms. Carroll describes what begins as a friendly encounter, as Mr. Trump, whom she’d met once before, asks her to try on lingerie that he is considering buying as a gift. Once they entered the dressing room, according to Ms. Carroll, Mr. Trump pushed her against the wall, pushed his mouth against her lips, then pulled down her tights, unzipped his pants and forced his “fingers around my private area, thrusts his penis halfway — or completely, I’m not certain — inside me.”
