Reuters —Three fires blazed on a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the Red Sea, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said on Friday, one day after rescuers evacuated its crew in the wake of an assault by Yemeni Houthi militants. The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control Yemen’s most populous regions, said on Thursday that they had attacked the Sounion oil tanker as part of their 10-month campaign against commercial shipping to support Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The Houthis first damaged the tanker on Wednesday with repeated attacks that caused a fire and a loss of engine power. The damaged tanker, carrying 150,000 metric tons of crude oil, poses an environmental hazard, the EU’s Red Sea naval mission Aspides said. The Sounion was the third vessel operated by Athens-based Delta Tankers to come under Houthi attack this month.

CNN —Authorities in Italy have opened a manslaughter investigation into the sinking of a superyacht, which killed British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and six others off the coast of Sicily earlier this week. Seven bodies have been recovered over the past four days, with divers working nearly 50 meters (160 feet) underwater to retrieve them. Italian authorities have confirmed who was missing from the Bayesian, but have not yet released a coroner’s report to formally name those found. While the reasons for the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht remain unconfirmed, many believe the yacht was struck by a waterspout — one of several types of tornadoes. The coast guard reported the yacht was struck by a tornado, and a waterspout was reported to the European Severe Weather Database around the same time.

The Summary Despite high ocean temperatures, hurricane season has hit a lull. The Gulf of Mexico is blazing hot, but hurricane season — temporarily, at least — has hit a lull, a surprise to researchers who see plenty of ingredients brewing in the Atlantic but no storms on the radar. Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Hurricane scientists predicted a record hurricane season this year, and it got off to a record-setting start when Hurricane Beryl became the first Category 4 storm to form in the Atlantic Ocean in June. The unofficial peak of hurricane season is Sept. 10.

Donald Trump’s campaign is expecting that Vice President Kamala Harris will get a “bump” coming out of the Democratic National Convention but generally does not see the week-long event changing the overall trajectory of the race. Security at a NATO air base in western Germany has been raised because of intelligence information pointing to a “potential threat,” and all staff not essential to missions have been sent home as a precaution, NATO said. The Geilenkirchen air base, near the border with the Netherlands, is where the alliance’s Airborne Warning and Control System, or AWACS, aircraft are based. A post on the NATO AWACS fleet’s account on social media network X late Thursday night announcing that “we raised the security level” did not elaborate on the nature of the potential threat. It said that “operations continue as planned.”The Geilenkirchen base said Friday that it had nothing to add to the statement and “the situation at the moment is unchanged.”German news agency dpa said a reporter saw police cars on the grounds of the air base. German media reported that drones had been spotted over a chemical park in Brunsbuettel, on the North Sea coast.

Divers scouring the wreckage of the superyacht that sank off the Sicilian coast have found the body of the last person missing from the luxury boat, believed to be the daughter of a British tech magnate. The body of Mike Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah was discovered early Friday, the Italian Coast Guard said, according to the Associated Press news agency — the culmination of a challenging five-day rescue operation. One other body, of the ship’s cook Recaldo Thomas, was recovered shortly after the accident. The local prosecutor's office has launched an investigation, though no cause or possible suspects had been publicly identified. Italian prosecutors investigating the case have scheduled a news conference on Saturday.

KINMEN, Taiwan — Taiwan wants to continue its free way of life and rejects being ruled by China’s Communist Party, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said Friday, visiting a frontline island between the two sides to mark a key battle with Chinese forces. “Our aim is that we hope for peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan sent its own forces to keep watch, the ministry said, using its usual wording for when China carries out such activities. China’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the latest combat patrol was related to Lai visiting Kinmen. MONTEREY, California — Hundreds of California sea lions have taken over San Carlos Beach in Monterey, California, prompting local officials to close the area to people. Caution tape has been put up but crowds are still drawn to the animal spectacle, taking photos of the sea lions as they rest and play on the sand and in the water. Hundreds of sea lions lay at the San Carlos beach in Monterey. They were expected to remain on San Carlos Beach for three to four weeks, Uttal said. Marge Brigadier, a volunteer with Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Bay Net program, said the sea lions were protected by the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, which prohibits people from changing the behavior of the sea lions, meaning that approaching too close or forcing them to flee is a violation.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

Dozens of boats zipped across Casco Bay during the Maine Lobster Boat Races on Saturday. That boat, a 32-footer with a powerful diesel engine, belonged to Jeremy Beal, 45, a large, soft-spoken man who comes from a long line of boat builders and lobstermen. “See, I grew up right in it,” he said between drags of a cigarette while leaning against the rail of his boat on the evening before the big race. For decades, Mr. Beal’s father, Wayne Beal, and an uncle, Calvin Beal, have built boats used by commercial fishers up and down the Maine coast. After years spent learning the family trade, Jeremy took over his dad’s business, Wayne Beal’s Boat Shop, in Jonesport, a seaside town more than 200 miles northeast of Portland.

Divers on Friday recovered the body of the final person who had been missing after a violent storm off the coast of Sicily sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea, the Italian firefighter corps said. The discovery of the body, that of Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, put an end to a wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived. Ms. Lynch, whose family owned the yacht, was the final person who had been formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s victory in a high-profile fraud case. There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which Mike Lynch had built his technology empire. Fifteen survived.
