UBS executives covering fixed income and equity strategies outlined in a recent note four different scenarios come November: a blue sweep, a Biden presidency with a split Congress, a red sweep, and a Trump presidency with a split Congress. The two overwhelmingly likely outcomes would be a Biden presidency with a divided Congress (40%) and a Trump presidency with a Republican Congress (45%), per UBS. A Biden victory with a divided CongressA Biden presidency will likely usher in increased tax rates and regulatory oversight, UBS said. A Trump presidency combined with a Republican Congress would mean an extension of the current lower marginal tax rates, the bank said. While antitrust regulation will likely ease under Trump, he's hardly a Big Tech supporter: Trump sued Facebook, Google, and Twitter (now X) in 2021.

Now, investment advisors are finding new and expansive use cases for AI in financial management. Vanguard is using AI to aggregate information from earnings transcripts and research reports, and has recently begun using AI to manage four of its stock funds. State Street is adding a generative AI feature to its platform which will answer customer questions about their portfolio and run analyses on portfolio data. There are some risks to using AI in investing, especially when your money could be on the line. Congress has pushed back on the rule, but Crawford is confident that AI regulation is in the cards, given the technology's far-reaching nature.

Cybersecurity: the software winner of 2024Amid the overall software downturn this year, cybersecurity is one of the few areas that hasn't seen reduced demand, and for good reason. Government organizations are a significant end market for cybersecurity, reinforcing demand for the sector's products. You actually may even dig in there when times get tough," Marino said, reinforcing the perennial nature of cybersecurity demand. Big Tech companies are pouring billions of dollars into building data centers to train it. The AI Value ChainAccording to UBS, investors should approach the overall AI industry as three interconnected layers: enabling, intelligence, and application. By understanding the major players in the AI space and investing in the most critical parts of the AI value chain, according to UBS. The bank predicts that the AI landscape will be marked by "vertically integrated" and "monolithic" firms with the scale to reach across the AI value chain. However, its stock hasn't seen the price appreciation that domestic tech companies have, suggesting that there's ample room for valuations to expand.

Extreme heat takes toll on outdoor workers

There’s little to no escape from sweltering temperatures for construction workers like Eva Marroquin, who cleans work sites in Austin, Texas, and has worked in the industry for 17 years. Since 2010, she’s worked closely with the Workers Defense Project, an organization that advocates for protections for low-wage, immigrant workers in the Texas construction industry. Slowing down small businessesIt’s barely just now summer, and heatwaves are already slowing down small businesses, according to Homebase, which provides payroll software to more than 100,000 small businesses, covering 2 million hourly workers. “I think anything that impacts small businesses is affecting the economy as a whole,” he said, noting how small businesses account for half the jobs in the country. For herself, the high heat is more of an inconvenience; the car’s hotter and she just needs to pack some extra water.

London CNN —Private schools in Britain may conjure up images of rolling lawns, pristine tennis courts, and dormitory rooms, serving as gilded hothouses of privilege. Not every private school is “synonymous with privilege and great wealth,” argues Sue Hannam, headteacher at Lichfield Cathedral School, a private school in central England. About 620,000 children are currently enrolled in private schools in Britain, equivalent to almost 6% of all school children, according to the Independent Schools Council. Hodge at the Education Policy Institute noted that, accounting for inflation, private school fees had risen by as much as 25% since 2010. Still, a demographic shift means state schools may “welcome” the influx, Sibieta wrote last year.

Enterprise software customers are seeing their profits shrink from high interest rates and weakening consumer spending, which is reflected in cost-cutting initiatives such as shrinking software budgets. The best software stocks to buy in today's environmentAccording to UBS, the current software industry offers investment opportunities for cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure stocks. Cybersecurity is a promising growth area, with potential for rapidly increasing demand, UBS said. Demand for cloud infrastructure — the combination of hardware and software needed for cloud computing — is also increasing. No shortage of problems can affect a flight, fueling traveler anxiety and contributing to thousands of daily delays and cancellations around the world. But for all of the frustration and alarm such events cause, it can be difficult to interpret and understand their severity. Here’s how aviation safety experts say travelers should think about disruptions when they occur. Several alarming air travel incidents have made headlines in recent weeks — a sharp plunge toward an ocean, an unnerving wobble that damaged the tail of a plane and an aborted departure after an apparent engine fire. But the most common mishaps and malfunctions, even if hair-raising, are not typically severe, experts said.
London CNN —A former opposition lawmaker in Britain’s House of Commons has alleged that the UK’s domestic spy agency MI5 may have issued a rare alert notice in 2022 about an alleged Chinese agent as a distraction from the so-called Partygate scandal, according to testimony before a tribunal looking into the alert. AI and data centers are driving up electricity usage in the US after a decade of flat demand. As a result, the utilities sector is performing strongly, especially independent power producers. IPP stocks like NRG, CEG, and VST will benefit the most from AI, says one portfolio manager. Investors are pouring into utilities stocks as data centers drive outsized demand for electricity.
