CNN —As she adjusts to life in the WNBA, rookie phenom Caitlin Clark is also having to navigate becoming a lightning rod for societal discourse. “It’s disappointing,” replied Clark ahead of the Indiana Fever’s home game against the Atlanta Dream. Her rivalry with fellow star Angel Reese, for example, has triggered discourse about race in the US. Clark has had a mixed start to her WNBA career so far, showing flashes of her brilliance but struggling initially with the physicality of the professional game. “Nobody’s apathetic about the WNBA because we’ve brought in so many new fans into what we call the fan funnel this year.”

A facial recognition start-up, accused of invasion of privacy in a class-action lawsuit, has agreed to a settlement, with a twist: Rather than cash payments, it would give a 23 percent stake in the company to Americans whose faces are in its database. Clearview AI, which is based in New York, scraped billions of photos from the web and social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram to build a facial recognition app used by thousands of police departments, the Department of Homeland Security and the F.B.I. The litigation has proved costly for Clearview AI, which would most likely go bankrupt before the case made it to trial, according to court documents. The company and those who sued it were “trapped together on a sinking ship,” lawyers for the plaintiffs wrote in a court filing proposing the settlement. “These realities led the sides to seek a creative solution by obtaining for the class a percentage of the value Clearview could achieve in the future,” added the lawyers, from Loevy + Loevy in Chicago.

CNN —Soccer star Sam Kerr has signed a new contract with current Women’s Super League (WSL) champion Chelsea, the club announced Thursday, but not before giving her fans a minor scare. According to BBC Sport, it was Kerr’s idea to tease the fans around the news of the contract extension. Kerr has become one of the best players in women's soccer. Former Chelsea manager Hayes had made it her mission to convince Kerr to move to the WSL club back in 2019. Sonia Bompastor’s recent arrival as the new Chelsea manager marks a new era in west London, but retaining Kerr will help steady the ship.

Vivian Maier was a disappearance artist. He has dedicated himself to promoting her legacy, and co-directed an Oscar-nominated documentary film, “Finding Vivian Maier” (2014). “Vivian Maier: Unseen Work,” at Fotografiska until Sept. 29, is the first New York museum show devoted to Maier and one of the largest exhibitions ever mounted of her photographs. Organized by Anne Morin, director of diChroma Photography, it was first seen in a different iteration at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris in 2021. In the 1970s and ’80s, as Asian immigration to the United States soared, grocers like H Mart; Patel Brothers, an Indian grocery founded in Chicago; and 99 Ranch Market, originally focused on foods from China and Taiwan, started in Westminster, Calif., opened to meet the demand for ingredients that tasted like home. These were tiny mom-and-pop shops in suburban strip malls or outer boroughs with large Asian immigrant populations. They weren’t fancy, but they were vital to their communities. Now, those same shops have transformed into sleekly designed chains with in-store roti machines, mobile ordering apps and locations across the country — all aiming to serve the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States and the millions of others who now crave flavors like Shin Ramyun, chili crisp, chaat masala and chai.

CNN —President Joe Biden’s power to engineer a swift abatement of the war between Israel and Hamas just suffered two serious new blows. • The rescue mission also emphasizes the disparity in the death toll between Palestinians and Israelis in the conflict. • The absence of Gantz may also create an even greater obstacle to approval of any peace deal between Israel and Hamas. • The fracturing of the Israeli war cabinet and Gantz’s call for elections could have unpredictable consequences in Israel amid rising protests against Netanyahu.
