Biden is running for re-election in 2024 and will likely face Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. "The only reason Biden is going to Michigan on Tuesday is because President Trump announced he is going on Wednesday," the Trump campaign said in a statement late on Friday. Trump has called for rank-and-file union workers to ignore their leaders. United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain blasted Trump earlier in the week, saying the union was "fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers." Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

The UAW on Friday invited Biden to visit workers on its picket lines, and said that it would expand its Detroit strike to parts distribution centers across the United States at General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). "It’s very rare for a president to visit strikers," said Jeremi Suri, a historian and presidential scholar at the University of Texas at Austin. The White House said the president appreciates the UAW invitation, saying Biden will continue to fight for workers, but but did not immediately commit to visiting the strikers. Biden said the automakers should "go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts for the UAW," echoing sentiments by union leaders. Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

De Sarno’s debut Friday, nine months after being hired in the wake of Michele’s surprise departure, was the most anticipated on the Milan Fashion Week calendar for next spring and summer womenswear. The fervor was enough to fill the front row with Hollywood A-listers including Julia Roberts and Ryan Gosling. In one recent interview, De Sarno professed admiration for Brutalist architecture, suggesting a love of the essential, and his collection was exactly that. A tiny leather bra top in embossed leather was paired with a matching midi skirt. The conversation started this week by De Sarno is to be continued.

Tom Wolfe in New York Photo: Yann Gamblin/Paris Match via Getty ImagesTom Wolfe was not only one of the great writers of the 20th century but he was an unusually theatrical one. From his spats to his homburgs, with his cape, his wolf-tipped walking stick, his dazzling, bespoke three-piece suits in white or cream, he looked like a parody of an Edwardian fop. Moreover, he wasn’t just the most venerated journalist (and journalistically based novelist) of his generation, he helped found the New Journalism school of writing, inspired many imitators, and caused cranial detonation among his many detractors. He did all of this in a televisual age, making frequent appearances on chat shows and submitting to the “60 Minutes” treatment. If any writer can make an apt subject for a documentary, it’s Wolfe.

Rich St. Pierre was 7 years old when his mother died suddenly. Well-meaning adults would tell him that “she had gone to a better place.” What, he wondered, was better than home, with him and his siblings? Carolynne, a maternity nurse known for her sharp wit, had undergone exhaustive experimental treatments around New England, desperate to buy more time. When it looked like it was running out, Rich and Carolynne shifted their focus: journaling, writing letters and recording videos for the kids. They also agreed to let two journalists from the local newspaper document the family’s final months with Carolynne.

Power follows demand, so the new nuclear reactors tend to be built where fast-developing economies need power to fuel their growth. To the Editor:Re “Make Shakespeare Dirty Again,” by Drew Lichtenberg (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 14):I feel sorry for students in Florida. Shakespeare has been revered across the globe for his wit, his wordsmithy and his deep understanding of human nature. Ron DeSantis, it seems that the celebration, appreciation and lamentation of the human condition in its entirety, which is what has made Shakespeare last all these centuries, may be removed from what is presented to Florida students. What an intellectual and cultural crime! Shakespeare has captured this spirit as no other has so far.

Combined, those two factors can make it very challenging to break into the housing market. Currently, it represents about 3% of the housing market, although that rises to 5% among first-time buyers, according to NAR. Imagining a 20% down payment, for instance, may cause potential buyers to throw up their hands in despair. So there is wiggle room, and you might be more equipped to buy on your own than you think.”Nonetheless, the harsh realities of the housing market may dictate more co-buying in future. With high prices and high interest rates, some potential buyers may not have much of a choice – and this relative rarity in the real estate world may soon become more common.

The Future of Rap Is Female
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Niela Orr | Photographs Adrienne Raquel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +22 min
The Future of Rap Is Female As their male counterparts turn depressive and paranoid, it’s the women who are having all the fun. In the mid-’80s, the dynamics shifted slightly, when UTFO released “Roxanne, Roxanne,” a comical torch song dissing a woman who rejected the men’s advances. Like good sex, raunchy rap is only fun if all parties are completely enthusiastic, and this music provides necessary female perspectives to match what the men make. In Miami one weekend in late July, Rolling Loud, one of the biggest annual hip-hop festivals, made itself into a microcosm of the rap world. There’s a relentless gender pessimism in the air, too — on the street, on dating apps, in the Supreme Court and, of course, in rap music.

Ron DeSantis hoped that Donald Trump's legal woes would hurt his opponent, per The New York Times. A USC political science professor told Insider that DeSantis hasn't hit Trump "hard enough." With eight months until the primaries, the public's opinion can still change — and so can Trump's legal standing. As for Trump's top challenger for the GOP nomination, Grose said DeSantis hasn't quite "hit him hard enough." Regardless, it appears like the DeSantis campaign is working hard on its reboot.

We continue to have a deeply divided Congress and electorate, a good chunk of which is still maniacally in Trump’s corner. A Biden-Trump rematch feels like a concession, as if we couldn’t do any better or have given up trying. The sentiment most Democrats seemed to muster in Biden’s favor while he was running was that he was inoffensive. Democrats and the media seem to have become more vocal in pointing out the hazards of Biden’s advancing age. When asked point blank whether it’s time for him to step aside, Biden said, almost tangentially, “I just want to finish the job.”

The IT giant announced Wednesday it would spend $1 billion on improving its artificial intelligence capabilities over the next three years, including training its entire staff of 250,000 people across 66 countries in the fast-moving technology. Its move comes as generative AI, the technology that underpins popular platforms such as ChatGPT, has taken the world by storm. “With the emergence of generative AI, we expect a fundamental shift up ahead, for all industries,” Wipro CEO Thierry Delaporte said in the statement. Businesses are increasingly using AI to either bolster or replace tasks usually carried out by humans.
