World No 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the French Open with a knee injury sustained in his round of 16 win against Argentine 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo. Although Djokovic was able to get through on painkillers and adrenaline, the extent of the problem is too great for him to continue. If Djokovic chooses to undergo surgery on the tear, he would likely miss not just Wimbledon, which begins on July 1, but also the Olympic Games and US Open later this summer. Djokovic said Monday night, after another of his miraculous comebacks, that he had been experiencing pain in his right knee for several weeks. As of Tuesday evening in Paris, there was no decision yet on whether Djokovic would undergo surgery to repair the meniscus.

CNN —Emma Raducanu has dropped out of this year’s French Open qualifying, opting instead to focus on building her fitness. Despite initially being entered into the qualifying draw, the Briton pulled out before matches were due to start on Monday. Pouria Zeraati, a television anchor at the UK-based channel Iran International, was reportedly attacked by a group of men outside his home in south-western Wimbledon. Iran has designated the television station a “terrorist entity.” Iranian state media has repeatedly accused the channel of fomenting unrest. CNN —Sam Kerr, Chelsea FC star and Australia women’s captain, pleaded not guilty to a “racially aggravated offense” of a police officer, British authorities said Monday. The 30-year-old striker was charged following an incident involving an officer on January 30 last year in Twickenham, a suburb of southwest London. Kerr was charged “via postal charge requisition on 21 January with a racially aggravated offense under Section 4A Public Order Act 1986,” the Met Police added.
