But he laments the fact that Yukinobu — and other women artists from Japan — are not given more prominence beyond occasional inclusion in broad group shows. For one, Trump took two hours before finally going to face Melania after the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape was released back in 2016, per an excerpt from The Washington Post reporter Mary Jordan's book on Melania, "The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump." Trevor Reed, the former U.S. Marine who was detained in Russia for nearly three years and later freed in a prisoner swap, was injured while fighting in Ukraine, the State Department said on Tuesday. He is receiving medical care in Germany, said Vedant Patel, a State Department spokesman. Mr. Reed was visiting his Russian girlfriend in Moscow in August 2019 when he was arrested on what his family said were bogus charges of assaulting police officers. The United States considered him wrongfully detained, and after months of diplomatic negotiations and mounting public pressure on the Biden administration, Mr. Reed was freed in April 2022 as part of a prisoner swap for a Russian pilot imprisoned on cocaine trafficking charges in the United States. The United States has repeatedly warned American citizens not to travel to Ukraine or participate in the war, though untold numbers of them have done so anyway.

The CFPB and state attorneys general sued a career boot camp that declared bankruptcy in 2022. Prehired sued nearly 300 former students last year, saying they'd defaulted on their loans. "Prehired also represented that consumers would pay nothing until they got a job and 'partner[ed] with' Prehired in their career. The lawsuit also accused Prehired of "falsely representing the amount of debt owed by consumers by stating that Prehired could collect more than the consumer legally owed." The complaint said Prehired filed more than 280 lawsuits in 2022 demanding that former students who it said had defaulted pay $25,000 each.

July 18 (Reuters) - The European Union (EU) said on Tuesday that Europe's slave-trading past inflicted "untold suffering" on millions of people and hinted at the need for reparations for what it described as a "crime against humanity". The idea of paying reparations or making other amends for slavery has a long history but the movement is gaining momentum worldwide. EU and CELAC agreed on one paragraph that acknowledged and "profoundly" regretted the "untold suffering inflicted on millions of men, women and children as a result of the transatlantic slave trade". It said slavery and the transatlantic slave trade were "appalling tragedies ... not only because of their abhorrent barbarism but also in terms of their magnitude". The CARICOM reparations commission "sees the persistent racial victimisation of the descendants of slavery and genocide as the root cause of their suffering today", the plan said.

The deadliest Marine sniper by number of confirmed kills is Chuck Mawhinney. The Vietnam War was a brutal conflict that left many of the service members who survived it with invisible scars. In Vietnam, Mawhinney "figured he'd never make it home alive," according to "The Sniper," a new book by Jim Lindsay written with input from the marksman. "Chuck" Mawhinney poses with a replica of the M40 sniper rifle he used during the Vietnam War. Another author of a series of books on snipers, Peter Senich, was able to use his connections with the Marine Corps archives to access Mawhinney's kill sheets showing 103 confirmed kills, officially making him the deadliest Marine sniper.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday asked the judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case to reject a motion by Mr. Trump’s lawyers to have his trial indefinitely postponed, a move that could serve to delay the proceeding until after the 2024 election. The filing by the prosecutors came three days after Mr. Trump’s legal team made an unusual request to the judge, Aileen M. Cannon, asking her to set aside the government’s initial suggestion to hold the trial in December and delay it until all “substantive motions” in the case were presented and resolved. Mr. Trump is now both a federal criminal defendant and the Republican Party’s leading candidate in the presidential campaign. There could be untold complications if his trial seeps into the final stages of the race. Moreover, if the trial is pushed back until after the election and Mr. Trump wins, he could try to pardon himself after taking office or have his attorney general dismiss the matter entirely.

During New York City’s crack era in the early 1990s, with homicide tallies five times higher than today, the authorities resorted to ruthless law enforcement. “They’d pull your socks off, pull your pants off.”Crime fell across the country during the ensuing decades in a broad societal shift, and New York become one of America’s safest big cities and a thriving tourist destination. But in its darkest days police and prosecutors had cut corners and used tactics that left untold numbers of innocent people — mostly poor men of color — imprisoned on bogus murder, rape and robbery charges. The prisoners’ dogged legal challenges prompted reinvestigations helped by left-leaning prosecutors, advances in DNA testing, pressure from newly formed advocacy groups and generous government restitution, turning New York into a national hotbed of exoneration. In recent years, one innocent middle-aged man after another has been released, ravaged by years in prison, into a tamer city.

I’ve been fascinated with film music since elementary school, when I got a cassette tape called “Kid Stuff: An Afternoon at the Movies,” which featured Mr. Williams and the Boston Pops. No one exemplifies this better than Mr. Williams, who is still composing at 91. Mr. Williams accomplished this by inviting the trumpet section of the London Symphony Orchestra to blast away in its most piercing register. As he has with other cues, Mr. Williams has given this particular set piece an afterlife in concert performances. Keep your eyes shut!” Maybe then we’ll stop passively hearing film music and begin actively listening to it.

An incredibly rare Magic: The Gathering card from a new expansion was found on Friday. Instead, it's all to do with Hasbro's trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, which released an expansion this month that crosses over with JRR Tolkien's beloved fantasy series. —Magic: The Gathering (@wizards_magic) June 30, 2023While the search is over, the card's ownership may not be settled. The breakneck pace and high costs of new releases has also been an issue for local game shops that sell Magic: The Gathering cards. In April though, the bank upgraded the stock to "neutral" after earnings showed revenue from the card game surged in the first quarter.

The majority of families don’t pay full price for the live-on-campus college experience that millions of teenagers seek. That leaves them waiting for the big money reveal after an offer of admission arrives and colleges send out financial aid award letters. Then, if they think they might qualify for need-based aid, seek help from financial aid staff in a separate process. If you do get in, the financial aid office tells you what it thinks you can afford and may offer so-called need-based aid. No application means no surprise and delight if your price, upon admission, is actually affordable.

Three weeks into my trek, as I ascended a steep path toward Yokomine-ji, the 60th of 88 temples along the Shikoku pilgrimage, I found myself enveloped by an unforgiving fog. In an instant, the colorful forest around me — mostly red cedar trees and fern bushes — faded, leaving me in a world of muted gray. Able to make out only the faintest shapes in the surrounded trees, I was convinced that I’d stumbled into an eerie fairy tale. Quietly, in the distance, I began to hear a chorus of small bells. In the newfound clarity of daylight, I began to wonder: Had the courteous band of fellow pilgrims existed only in my mind?

Moskowitz is pushing to curb the rule for reporters — and ultimately lawmakers — who enter the room. A reporter told Politico that the ability to wear sneakers could help many reporters who are constantly on the run. And Moskowitz — a 42-year-old sneakerhead with a penchant for Air Jordans — is looking to relax the rules governing footwear in the speaker's lobby. "Obviously, there is tradition here," Moskowitz told Politico in an interview.

(CNN) — Never-before-seen draft lyrics of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” suggest that Freddie Mercury considered giving his mock-opera anthem a somewhat different title: “Mongolian Rhapsody.”The discovery was made following the emergence of a 15-page folio of lyrics, vocal lines and harmonies handwritten by the singer as he composed his 1975 hit. Queen recorded “Bohemian Rhapsody” the next year. Sotheby's auction house said the handwritten lyrics present "untold insights into other possible directions the song could have taken." Opinion | Who Should We Honor on Memorial Day?
  + stars: | 2023-05-28 | by ( Kayla M. Williams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
While I worked in signals intelligence in Iraq, my friend Alyssa Peterson worked in human intelligence. In 2020, more than 6,100 veterans died by suicide. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, better known as the Wall, is inscribed with over 58,000 names of Americans who died in or supporting combat, or within 120 days of injuries or illnesses incurred in the combat zone. Their names will not be inscribed on the Wall, though the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is seeking to memorialize them in other ways. I will forever mourn and honor her, too, among our war dead this and every Memorial Day, whether or not her name is ever inscribed on a list of those killed in the global war on terrorism.
