Stocks ended Thursday slightly higher ahead of a key update on inflation. PCE for May will be published on Friday morning, providing new hints about when rate cuts may be coming. Chip firms Nvidia and Micron dipped in Thursday's session, though the broader Nasdaq edged higher. Bond yields dipped ahead of the new data, with the 10-year Treasury yield falling about two basis points to 4.292%. CNN —President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, are set to make history on CNN Thursday night as they meet for their first 2024 debate. Thursday’s debate will be the earliest in the election cycle that a presidential debate featuring the major parties’ nominees has taken place in modern history. That’s why Trump’s advisers and allies have urged the former president to focus on issues like the economy, crime and inflation as he debates Biden. The Biden campaign knows all this, of course, so it will be interesting – and instructive – to hear his message and analyze where it’s being targeted. The Trump campaign distanced itself, in part, from the plan, noting that the advisers who wrote it are not on the payroll.

New York CNN —This is the summer of fast food value meal wars, and Taco Bell isn’t sitting back. The chain announced Thursday that it’s entering the battle with one of its biggest deals ever. “We believe that fast food should be a luxury that every one can afford everyday,” said Taylor Montgomery, Taco Bell’s chief marketing officer. He added that its deal offers “full-sized favorites” compared to some of its rivals’ deals that have smaller portions. Like its rivals, Yum has been vocal that some of its problems stem from customers spending less on fast food.

Crude oil futures held firm on Thursday as fears of war between Israel and the Iran-backed militia Hezbollah overshadowed soft U.S. gasoline demand. "The hurricane left a noticeable mark on US gasoline consumption," Prateek Kedia, vice president of global commodities research at JPMorgan, told clients in a research note Wednesday. Here are today's energy prices:But oil still managed to close slightly higher Wednesday, as escalating tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border provided a price floor. Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of S&P Global, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday that Middle East tensions are hanging over the market. He cautioned that oil could spike again, pointing to the April rally when prices broke above $90 per barrel when Israel and Iran teetered on the brink of war.

Former President Donald Trump has promised to attack President Joe Biden specifically on inflation. Even as the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates, demand and prices have stayed high, keeping housing inflation stubbornly elevated. Where Trump standsAs president, Trump didn't pursue as many policies directly intended to make housing more affordable. While in office, Trump's proposed budgets included significant cuts to agencies that provide federal housing subsidies, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Lumber prices are down 24% from their mid-March peak amid subdued home-building activity. The combination of oversupply and falling demand for lumber are driving prices down, say industry experts. AdvertisementLumber prices have plunged this year as the peak home-building season falls flat amid subdued demand. Putting added pressure on lumber prices is that the commodity is experiencing a period of oversupply. And falling demand combined with rising supply can be a powerful dynamic that puts downward pressure on prices.

Part of the military's mission at home is to keep stockpiles of goods like critical minerals on hand for emergency wartime use. When China finally reopened to tourists in 2023, we got visas and booked a July flight to Beijing via Doha on Qatar Airways, paying about $1,400 total. The link on the Qatar Airways website was broken, but I confirmed online and with friends who had recently traveled to China that I could fill it out upon arrival. At the airport, Qatar Airways disagreed, and when I once again couldn’t get the form to work, we were denied boarding. Qatar Airways mostly refunded the tickets — we received $1,185 — but refused to admit it was wrong.
