A Frontier Airlines flight bound for Tampa changed course Friday night after an unruly passenger was discovered with a box cutter, according to officials. After the suspect was taken into custody and searched, a second box cutter was found in their carry-on, according to the agency. The plane was then "diverted to Atlanta after a passenger on board the aircraft was observed in possession of a box cutter," according to a statement from the airline shared with NBC News. Frontier Airlines didn't provide any additional information on the incident, but according to the Transportation Security Administration, there had been a disturbance involving the passenger in possession of the box cutter. "FBI and Atlanta Police Department responded to the incident, took the suspect into custody and the flight was canceled."
A Frontier Airlines flight made an emergency landing after a passenger was seen with a box cutter. He threatened to stab other passengers, an Atlanta airport spokesperson told The New York Times. Box cutters have been banned on aircraft since a post-9/11 tightening of security regulations. The man threatened to stab fellow passengers and crew members on flight 1761, Tim Turner, a spokesperson for Atlanta International Airport told The New York Times. Knives and blades, including box cutters, should be identified in pre-flight screening.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Security officers at a South Florida airport have reported finding a handgun hidden inside a raw chicken packed in a traveler’s luggage. The Transportation Security Administration posted photos of the gun and poultry, with a pun-filled caption, Monday on its official Instagram account. The post didn’t identify the traveler who was transporting the weapon or whether any arrests were made. According to the TSA, fresh meat, seafood and other non-liquid food items are permitted in both carry-on and checked bags, as long as they are packed in ice. Unloaded firearms are allowed to be transported in checked bags, but they must be declared at the ticket counter and packed in a locked hard-sided container.
The service lets members skip long airport security lines for 5 years. The move is a rare example of a price cut in 2022. The service allows qualifying travelers to skip busy security screening lines at the airport for the next 5 years. "For individuals and families with plans to fly this holiday season, now is the time to enroll or renew in TSA PreCheck," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement announcing PreCheck's price cut. Not everyone qualifies to cut security lines, though.

US airlines forecast the continued health of leisure travel heading into holidays. The TSA screened 15 million passengers last week at US airports, according to checkpoint data. Since the Labor Day holiday, airline traffic stalled out in September as the summer vacation season came to an end. Flight bookings have shown three straight weeks of steady improvements following a modest slow down after Labor Day, according to the report. The increased volume in international bookings more than offset a drop in prices for global travel, according to BofA.
WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened 2.49 million air passengers on Sunday, the highest daily number since February 2020. The number was however below the 2.61 million screened on the same day in 2019. The Sunday checkpoint traffic was the highest since Feb. 11, 2020, when TSA screened nearly 2.51 million passengers and comes as airlines reported business travel is increasing. The figure is just above the number screened on July 1. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterReporting by David ShepardsonOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Travelers can save money on unconventional flying days. The average round-trip domestic airfare for trips between November 20 and November 24 this year cost $350, according to the Hopper travel booking app. Rising jet fuel prices, fewer scheduled flights, and pent-up travel demand have all contributed to the higher prices, Hopper said. On average, Black Friday fares are $175 less than the weekend days after Thanksgiving, according to Hopper. Hopper expects airline tickets to rise $10 per day starting Nov. 1 with domestic round-trip prices peaking at $550 for last-minute bookings.
Economic worries loom over U.S. airline earnings

Travel demand tends to cool after Labor Day, which marks the unofficial end of the U.S. summer season. Britain's biggest airport, Heathrow, on Tuesday warned of a possible slowdown in travel demand this winter. As companies call their employees back to office, business travel demand has received a boost. Prior to the pandemic, business travel accounted for up to 50% of the U.S airline industry's passenger revenue, according to trade group Airlines for America. "We're looking at business travel," Christopher Raite, senior analyst at Third Bridge, said.
One would think that those perpetuating the “open border” myth would be eager to seize every opportunity to strengthen border security. This action — and similar ones orchestrated by other GOP governors — have also deliberately elevated the “open border” narrative, which falsely represents that unlawful immigrants are waltzing into the U.S. through a porous southern border in droves. Contrary to the “open border” myth, U.S. borders are guarded by a vast and well-funded national security agency that has grown far larger and more powerful in recent years. Nick Ut / Getty Images fileOne would think that those perpetuating the “open border” myth would be eager to seize every opportunity to strengthen border security. Characterizing the humanitarian challenge at the southern border as a solely U.S. “open border” problem also presents an inaccurate picture of the global forced displacement crisis.
The rocky summer travel season ended on a high note during Labor Day weekend with a surge in air travelers and relatively smooth operations across the U.S., according to data released on Tuesday. The Transportation Security Administration screened nearly 8.76 million people from Friday through Monday, surpassing pre-pandemic levels of the same weekend in 2019, when it screened 8.6 million people. Airlines had reduced their schedules this summer to help stop spiraling flight delays as they grappled with labor shortages. Flight disruptions over the popular travel weekend were also below recent trends, helped by decent weather. That compares with 2.1% of U.S. carriers' flights canceled between May 27, the Friday before Memorial Day, through Labor Day.
The CEO of Accor, Europe's top hotel chain, said he's hiring workers without experience or résumés. Sebastien Bazin said some Accor hotels were limiting restaurant hours because of staff shortages. Hospitality workers have been quitting their jobs over wages, benefits, and working conditions. It means some hotels have been forced to widen their candidate pools — with Accor, Europe's largest hotel chain, turning to workers without experience or even résumés. Some days, Accor hotels have been forced to stop serving lunch or even completely close their restaurants because they don't have enough staff, Bazin said.
