When Donald J. Trump repeatedly singled out the Japanese construction equipment maker Komatsu during his 2016 presidential campaign, employees at the company were taken aback. In one interview, Mr. Trump criticized the Affordable Care Act as being so expensive that it required people to “get hit by a Komatsu tractor” to meet the deductible. At the time, Komatsu’s president brushed off the remarks, saying the company was grateful to Mr. Trump for helping to raise its global profile. After his improbable victory over Hillary Clinton, however, Komatsu took steps to ingratiate itself with the Trump White House. Since then, it has increased investments in North America, adding thousands of workers to its payroll and ramping up domestic production.

In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Jonathan Allen explains why Democrats need to retool their economic message during Donald Trump's second term. Plus, senior national politics reporter Matt Dixon writes that the battle to succeed Trump in four years is already underway. How Trump broke both parties — and where Democrats go from hereBy Jonathan AllenOver the course of the last decade, President-elect Donald Trump broke both national political parties. Before Trump, Democrats nominated — and the country twice elected — Barack Obama, a candidate who ran against leaders that walked the country into forever wars and a finance-and-housing crisis that nearly toppled the economy. Harris’ economic policy offerings were largely expansions of Biden proposals, such as more generous homebuyer and child tax credits than he called for.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic victory has scrambled next week’s three-way contest to replace Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, the chamber’s longest-serving leader who is stepping down at the end of the year. One ally of both Scott and Trump, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., urged Trump to endorse Scott, a former Florida governor who cruised to re-election in the Senate on Tuesday night. “If you’ve got any influence with President Trump, ask President Trump to come out publicly and say he wants to work with somebody as accomplished as Rick Scott to accomplish his agenda. Cornyn joined Trump at a rally in Reno, Nevada, last month for Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown, whose race is currently too close to call, according to NBC News projections. "As I told President Trump, I'm interested in getting the band back together again," Cornyn told Fox News host Neil Cavuto on Monday.

Weeks after sticky black balls washed up on the famed beaches of Sydney, Australia, scientists say they have partly solved the mystery behind the “disgusting” blobs. Initially thought to be tar balls, the golf-ball-size debris turned out to be something much different — a combination of decomposed cooking oils, hair and food waste, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) said Wednesday. Balls collected for testing in a laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They said preliminary test results indicated that the blobs were tar balls formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water. Sydney Water confirmed there were no issues at the Bondi or Malabar water facilities, while Transport for NSW Maritime reviewed recent weather patterns but found no clear answers, according to the statement.

To lower housing costs, Trump has said he would allow homes to be built on federally protected land, something that could help increase the supply of homes in places like Nevada and Arizona. TaxesTrump has proposed a number of tax cuts, including a complete elimination of the federal income tax. Those cuts lowered the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35%, reduced individual income tax rates, and increased the standard deduction. That could create havoc for workers and consumers and reduce the amount of income taxes the federal government brings in. About 40% of Social Security recipients pay federal income taxes, typically because they have other sources of income that raise them above a certain threshold where they are required to pay income tax, according to the Social Security Administration.

Mr. Trump is widely regarded around the world as a transactional leader. Chinese officials do see a potential upside if Mr. Trump pulls the United States back from its role as a global leader. But the Kremlin seems skeptical that Mr. Trump would actually push for such a deal, especially because of his track record: There was jubilation in Moscow when Mr. Trump won in 2016, but over the next four years, U.S. sanctions against Russia only increased, and Mr. Trump sent antitank weapons to Ukraine. On Wednesday, he quickly made clear that he would seek to have Mr. Trump on his side, as one of the first world leaders to congratulate Mr. Trump in a post on X. Mr. Trump has been effective in demanding more military spending from fellow NATO members, said Mr. Heisbourg.

Gen Z voters who struggle with cursive could slow the vote count, Nevada's secretary of state said. He attributed higher numbers of problematic mail ballots to young voters without signatures. States in the US require a voter's signature on mail and absentee ballots, and several states require additional verifications, including comparing that signature to the voter's signature on file. As the state continues to process mail ballots this week, those figures — which are already higher than in 2020 and 2022 — are expected to increase. Hundreds of thousands of mail ballots, or about 1%, were rejected across the country during the 2022 midterm elections, NPR reported at the time.

Representatives from Trump’s team met with federal agency transition planners last week to discuss “post-election readiness,” according to a White House official. GSA “is prepared to provide services to the Trump transition team once an MOU is executed and services are accepted,” a GSA spokesperson said. The federal transition coordinator, a White House spokesperson told CNN, is “actively working” with the president-elect’s transition team to complete its MOU. Trump’s transition team also has not met that deadline.
