As a result, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Bank of America (BAC) to pay more than $100 million to customers and $90 million in penalties. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency also ordered Bank of America (BAC) to pay $60 million in fines. “Bank of America wrongfully withheld credit card rewards, double-dipped on fees, and opened accounts without consent,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said in a statement. Bank of America noted in an email to CNN that those fees were eliminated last year. In 2014, it was ordered by the CFPB to pay $727 million in redress to consumers for illegal credit card practices.

The fire started early Friday on the Nohoch-A link platform of the company's Cantarell Field and later moved to a compression complex, killing two people. "Today, 700,000 barrels of losses have been reflected (...) because we closed practically all the wells in the area," Romero said via the company's Twitter account. As of Saturday afternoon, 600,000 barrels of production had resumed, the executive added. Most of Mexico's crude production, approximately 1.6 million bpd, comes from the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

It’s Toxic Slime Time on Florida’s Lake Okeechobee

David Tesher: Before we were forecasting a short and shallow recession, but we no longer think there’s going to be a recession. Hard decisions are being made, and that’s going to feed back into corporate growth prospects. As economic conditions slow, credit is becoming tighter and companies are defaulting at a faster pace than they have. So yes, some corporations are distressed, but this isn’t something affecting the entire market, which is what you’d associate with a broad credit crunch. Big Tech is back with a vengeanceLast year was rough for tech companies: Tech stocks fell more than 30% in 2022, while the overall market dropped 20%.

Fourth of July gas prices take almost unprecedented plunge

During the week ending June 26, the average gas price was $3.57 a gallon, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Although pump prices have retreated from last year’s record highs, gas prices were cheaper in the summer of 2021 and certainly in 2020 when Covid-19 shut down large swaths of the economy. Pump prices plunge in Ohio, CaliforniaStill, over the past 12 months, gas prices are down in all 50 states, according to AAA. Washington recently replaced California with the unwanted distinction of having America’s most expensive gas prices. Why gas prices are downThe tumble in gas prices is an undeniable positive for consumers.

So what does the rest of the year have in store for Wall Street? Unfortunately, Wall Street is unlikely to receive the clarity it seeks anytime soon. Still, economists at the Federal Reserve believe that a recession seems more likely by the end of 2023 than not. AI boom: Wall Street has a lot to worry about, but there’s at least one source of market euphoria: artificial intelligence. CNN —“Play big.”For the last decade, American golfer Wyndham Clark has carried a two-word rule into every competition. It’s an instruction left by his mother, Lise Clark, who died of breast cancer in 2013 while he was learning his trade at Oklahoma State University. “When she was sick and I was in college, she told me, ‘Hey, play big,’” Clark told reporters after his second round on Friday. So far, Clark's best-ever major finish was a top-75 finish at the PGA Championship in 2021. Having missed the cut on both previous starts at the major, the Denver-born golfer is comfortably on course to beat his best-ever major finish, a top-75 finish at the PGA Championship in 2021.

When I’m out there playing, I want to do that for her.”Clark conjured the memory in the wake of two consecutive stellar rounds at the national golf championship at Los Angeles Country Club. He has steadily been climbing the world golf rankings with six top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour during the 2022-23 season. Last month, he earned his first tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C., a milestone that Clark, now ranked 32nd in the world, said significantly bolstered his belief in himself. In the months after the death of his mother, who had introduced him to golf as a toddler, Clark struggled on and off the course. When he competed poorly, Clark would storm off the golf course and, he said, “just drive away as fast as I could, I didn’t even know where I was going.”

Our four industrial-focused stocks — Caterpillar (CAT), Emerson Electric (EMR), Honeywell (HON) and Linde (LIN) — have all been gaining steam over the past three months. There are positive short-term catalysts for our industrial holdings including the U.S. government's commitment to infrastructure spending, global decarbonization initiatives, and industrial automation. For all these reasons, Jim said EMR stock has been "stuck in the mud." EMR stock also pays a healthy 2.5% annual dividend yield and is a real dividend aristocrat. The Club's take: Jim expects Honeywell's stock to go higher from here as the market broadens beyond a handful of tech stocks.

There's a risk that stocks will go downhill from here, according to Wells Fargo's Paul Christopher, as he warned investors not to chase the current rally. "Even if the Fed stays on hold next week, we don't think the Fed stays on hold for very long — inflation is just too sticky." Christopher added that he does not believe the Fed will cut rates this year. History shows the S & P 500 doesn't bottom until, on average, six months after the first Fed rate cut, Christopher said. The rally has been a narrow-focused one, however, with gains driven by just a few major tech stocks.

Why it matters: The count of publicly listed companies traded on US exchanges has fallen substantially from its peak in 1996. It’s not that America has half as many companies as 30 years ago – it’s that companies are increasingly staying private, largely outside the scrutiny of the public eye. Publicly listed companies are subject to regulatory oversight and disclosure requirements, which help ensure transparency and maintain investor confidence. “I think it’s natural that companies would delay going public when valuations get halved and investors are not enthusiastic about investing in new companies,” said Kennedy. Some private equity funds have even taken advantage of the bear market to buy up publicly traded companies.

If completed, the Mountain Valley Pipeline will be a very large and long-lived methane delivery device. At the end of the line, the methane will be burned in power plants and furnaces, producing carbon dioxide. But now that wind, solar and battery storage are indeed quite ready and, in many places, cheaper than gas, the jig is up. Though the assertions that the pipeline is necessary and good for the climate defy logic, the political calculus is clear enough. Mr. Manchin was also a supporter of another large gas pipeline that would have originated in his state: the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which I have been reporting on since 2019.

(Nordstrom does offer another credit card, the Nordstrom Retail Credit Card, which offers similar rewards but can only be used to make store purchases.) While Nordstrom’s rewards aren’t top of the market, especially when compared to flat cash back credit card options, the card does come with a big fringe benefit for devotees of the department store: early access to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which begins each year in July. The Nordstrom Visa credit card also rewards your spending at Nordstrom—or wherever else you shop. No foreign transaction feesIt is worth noting that not all of these perks are exclusive to credit card users, including early sale access. Investors worried about potential losses among banks from office real estate loans after comments from executives, including Wells Fargo & Co's (WFC.N) Chief Executive Officer Charlie Scharf and Blackstone President Jonathan Gray at a Sanford C Bernstein investor conference. Meanwhile, Blackstone's Gray talked about "unprecedented weakness" in older office buildings while noting that this segment currently makes up less than 2% of company's equity portfolio in real estate. Rick Meckler, partner, Cherry Lane Investments, a family investment office in New Vernon, New Jersey said "continued concern over loans made to the office market," was hurting bank stocks broadly on Wednesday, citing the Wells Fargo comments. "The implication is that there are those that will suffer even if Wells Fargo is diversified enough," Meckler said. KeyCorp, down 5.5%, was the biggest decliner in the S&P bank index, and Zions was next, down 4.9%.

Opinion | The Case for Obligation

The roots of these mammoth trees, stretching some 200 feet into the air above us, run only six to 12 feet deep. Instead of growing down, they grow out, extending dozens of feet to each side, enmeshing themselves with the roots of their neighbors. This is why we never see a lone redwood: They can survive only in a grove, bound together in obligation. But in our age of autonomy, efficiency, boundaries and self-care, we too often deprioritize, if not overlook altogether, the wellspring of strength and meaning that comes from obligation. If we commit to certain people and activities, if we feel an obligation to show up for them, then it’s likely that we will, indeed, show up.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — About six weeks ago — that is, a missed Masters Tournament cut, a self-imposed hiatus and a tie for 47th at the Wells Fargo Championship ago — Rory McIlroy talked about pies. “It’s just putting all those ingredients in and setting the oven to the right temperature and letting it all sort of come to fruition.”This week’s P.G.A. But a victory or a strong showing would quiet the doubts that have arisen around McIlroy, who is No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking but perpetually shadowed by his failure to capture a major championship since 2014. Despite his membership at Oak Hill, McIlroy has been reluctant to declare some sort of home-course advantage since he, after all, lives in Florida.
