Major League Baseball and the Red Sox issued a two-game suspension to Boston outfielder Jarren Duran on Monday after he called a fan a homophobic slur in an outburst captured on a telecast of Sunday's game against the Houston Astros. The unpaid suspension begins immediately, excluding Duran from Monday night's game at Fenway Park against the Texas Rangers. “I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. The Red Sox will play the Rangers as part of a three-game series on back-to-back nights at Fenway Park, so Duran will also have to sit out Tuesday's matchup. Until Monday night, Duran, a 2024 All-Star, has started every game this season.

Crosses with the names of shooting victims outside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 26, 2022. “I think he’s shooting kids.”But the offer arrived too late, coming just around the time that the shooting had ended and law enforcement officers killed Salvador Ramos. Former Uvalde school Police Chief Pete Arredondo and former school officer Adrian Gonzales have pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of child abandonment and endangerment. A Texas state trooper in Uvalde who had been suspended was reinstated to his job earlier this month. In an interview this week with CNN, Arredondo said he thinks he’s been “scapegoated” as the one to blame for the botched law enforcement response.

They immediately ran into a problem finding a candidate to oppose the incumbent. There were only 16 practicing lawyers in the three counties that make up the deep-red district, including the present Democratic office-holder, Randy Reynolds, who some said was not an effective prosecutor. Desperate for a challenger, they turned to Sarah Stogner, an oil-and-gas lawyer who, on paper, would seem to be an unlikely candidate to boost the Republican Party in what ought to have been one of its strongholds. She has never tried a criminal case. And she’s made her mark in Texas oil law mainly for suing Chevron over environmental damage from abandoned oil wells.

I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

“Tim Walz gave his wife a nice, firm Midwestern handshake, and then tried to sort of awkwardly correct for it,” Vance said. Vance said “of course” he acknowledges the families of Harris and Buttigieg, and argued his comments were taken out of context. The Ohio senator said Republicans’ goal is to contrast the policies Trump stood for during his term in office with those of the Biden-Harris administration. “I think all President Trump was saying was that look, it’s kind of weird that you have so many bureaucrats making so many important decisions. “And I think that’s what President Trump was getting at.

Vice President Kamala Harris said on Saturday that she would seek to end federal income taxes on tips if she were elected president, mirroring a policy proposal that former President Donald J. Trump made earlier this year. The proposal from Ms. Harris — which she announced in Las Vegas, where thousands of casino employees depend on tipped wages — is a priority of Nevada’s influential Culinary Workers Union. Both Ms. Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, recognized the union in their remarks to a packed basketball arena on Saturday night. A renewed spotlight on protecting access to birth control may not help women who are already struggling to find affordable contraception in some states with the strictest abortion laws. Few community clinics have the amount of money needed to cover birth control each month, McCollum said. But over-the-counter birth control pills haven’t reached many women in rural areas. Because of the Texas policy change an estimated one-quarter of family planning clinics in the state closed by 2013. “If someone does not have insurance, we can pay for their visit and their birth control method,” McCollum said.

The report comes three years after the department launched a federal investigation into alleged widespread abuse and harsh practices within the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, which takes in hundreds of young people every year. Clarke also noted that about 80% of Texas children in the lockups are Black or Hispanic. Mental health concerns, such as suicidal ideation and self-harm, were ignored while children were routinely punished for their behavior, according to the federal report. But it hasn’t been enough.”In 2021, the Justice Department opened an investigation into Texas’ five juvenile facilities after advocates filed a complaint. Texas is not the only state facing federal investigations by the government, or lawsuits from former incarcerated children over harsh conditions in youth lockups.

The findings suggest some OB-GYN residents are receiving less training in abortion care, which could leave them unprepared for emergency situations. They’re based on conversations with leaders and educators from 20 OB-GYN residency programs conducted from February to June. The report also highlights how little education some OB-GYN residents are receiving in how to provide an abortion. In the past, residency programs often partnered with abortion clinics to provide that training, but in states with abortion bans, those clinics have shut down. Some patients, doctors and advocates have begun to seek that clarity in court.

Many people consume alcohol to relax and relieve stress, which are some of the top reasons people travel, too. How is sober travel discussed on TikTok? Sentiment in the past year shows that among social media interactions 32% is positive, 38% is neutral and 30% is negative. The ranking, however, isn't a list of countries where alcohol sales are banned — places like Brunei, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Costa Rica ranked high on the list of "sober travel" destinations, in part, because of its outdoor activities and national parks.

Behind the scenes, the conservative justice sought to put a thumb on the scale for states trying to restrict how social media companies filter content. The states enacted their laws in 2021 and, with variations, restricted the ability of social media platforms to filter third-party messages, videos and other content. Greg Abbott signed that state’s measure, he said, “there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas.” In Florida, Gov. Kagan added a footnote to her majority opinion buttressing that point and reinforcing Barrett’s view. But, despite Alito’s protest, Kagan had a majority signing her decision, which, at minimum, offers lower court judges a strong indication of the framework the high court majority would use in future online challenges.

Perplexity AI on Tuesday debuted a revenue-sharing model for publishers after more than a month of plagiarism accusations. Media outlets and content platforms including Fortune, Time, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, Der Spiegel and WordPress.com are the first to join the company's "Publishers Program." Under the new partner program, any time a user asks a question and Perplexity generates advertising revenue from citing one of the publisher's articles in its answer, Perplexity will share a flat percentage of that revenue. "Some of it grew out of conversations we were having with publishers about integrating Perplexity APIs and technology into their products," Shevelenko said. But not all news organizations are gearing up for a fight, and some are instead joining forces with AI startups like OpenAI, Perplexity and others.

More specifically, they're taking aim at a widespread rule that requires almost every new apartment building in the US to include at least two separate stairwells. This part of local codes, they say, is an outdated safety measure that really just makes apartment units smaller, more expensive, and darker (yes, darker). City planners there sometimes call these single-stair buildings "Seattle Specials" — they simply wouldn't be possible in pretty much any other city. Almost all of Europe, as well as Asia, Mexico and South America, allows single-stair buildings of six stories or higher. Germany allows single-stair buildings to stretch to about 20 stories, while Switzerland has no such limit.
