Nikki Haley doesn’t defeat former President Donald Trump in New Hampshire’s primary on Tuesday, the fight may be over. Haley said Sunday she would “absolutely” remain in the Republican presidential race through South Carolina’s February 24 primary. Recent departures from the 2024 race have already shaped the New Hampshire Republican primary. Another 3% of likely GOP primary voters say they’d vote for someone else. For her part, Haley insisted Monday on Fox News that she’ll continue in the race, no matter the outcome of the New Hampshire primary.

Donald J. Trump’s victory in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday provided him the second of an opening pair of wins in the Republican nomination fight that accelerated his push for the party to coalesce behind him and deepened questions about the path forward for Nikki Haley, his lone remaining rival. The defeat of Ms. Haley in New Hampshire came eight days after the former president trounced Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida so thoroughly in Iowa that it drove Mr. DeSantis from the race. Mr. Trump and his allies have turned his twin early wins into a milestone — declaring, after just the first two contests, that the party needs to unite behind him now to prepare for a rematch in November between Mr. Trump and President Biden. No Republican candidate has ever won the first two states and then not ultimately secured the presidential nomination, a fact that Mr. Trump himself noted in his victory speech in Nashua, N.H.“When you win Iowa and you win New Hampshire, they’ve never had a loss — there’s never been — so we’re not going to be the first, I can tell you,” Mr. Trump told the crowd.

The first votes in the New Hampshire primary have been cast in the township of Dixville Notch. Nikki Haley took 100 percent of the vote, with 100 percent turnout. The polls — or poll, in this case — opened just after the clock struck midnight, as they have here for 64 years, to great fanfare. And 10 minutes later, the voting was done. Ms. Haley’s unanimous victory came as something of a surprise to a first-time Dixville Notch voter, Valerie Maxwell, 54, who works for the resort where the voting was held.

But she’ll be battling history: In modern presidential campaign history, no non-incumbent has won the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary without going on to win his party’s nomination. Here are five takeaways from the New Hampshire primaries:Trump wants Haley out — nowIn what were expected to be celebratory remarks Tuesday night in New Hampshire, Trump instead sounded annoyed that Haley had not yet dropped out of the Republican primary race. There are dozens of states left to go,” Haley told supporters in her election night speech Tuesday in New Hampshire. Haley waves to the audience as she speaks at a New Hampshire primary night rally, in Concord, New Hampshire, on Tuesday. (Trump skipped all five Republican primary debates, and has shown no indication he’d consider participating in one.)

Donald Trump is eyeing a win in New Hampshire’s Republican primary in his first one-on-one contest against Nikki Haley, while President Joe Biden is hoping to avoid embarrassment by prevailing in a Democratic primary where he isn’t even on the ballot. The former president is looking for his second straight victory in his quest for the 2024 GOP nomination after knocking out the rest of the field with a commanding win in Iowa. In the first results released early Tuesday, all six registered voters of tiny Dixville Notch cast their ballots for Haley over Trump. The resort town is the only one in New Hampshire this year that opted to vote at midnight. Biden's name isn't on the ballot as a result, but his allies are mounting a write-in campaign for him.

Some Democratic voters in New Hampshire received calls appearing to be from Biden. The deepfakes of the president pushed Democrats to skip Tuesday's primary election in New Hampshire. AdvertisementJust before the first (but unofficial) Democratic primary of the 2024 election, voters in New Hampshire said they've received phone calls telling them not to turn out from an unlikely source: President Joe Biden. "We know the value of voting Democratic on our votes count," an inauthentic recording of Biden said in the call. The message continued, adding that participating in the Democratic primary in New Hampshire "only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again.

Voters in New Hampshire received robocall messages over the weekend in a voice that was most likely artificially generated to impersonate President Biden’s, urging them not to vote in Tuesday’s primary election, according to the state attorney general’s office. The fake recordings, which told listeners that “your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday,” were manipulated to seem as if they had been sent by an officer of a Democratic committee, the office said. The attorney general’s office stressed that voting in the primary would not rule out voters from also casting ballots in the general election in November. “These messages appear to be an unlawful attempt to disrupt the New Hampshire presidential primary election and to suppress New Hampshire voters,” the office said in a statement. “New Hampshire voters should disregard the content of this message entirely.”

"A lot of people on Wall Street have been living in this pipe dream of Trump not getting the nomination. "It's painful for me to admit this, but Wall Street is basically nonchalant to this election," longtime Wall Street executive and former Trump communications director Anthony Scaramucci said in a recent interview with The Hill. An outside effort "will not work against Trump," one of DeSantis' Wall Street fundraisers said. "The next question is, 'will Wall Street work to stop him in the general by supporting Biden?'" In 2020, Wall Street executives combined to donate over $74 million to helping Biden defeat Trump.

The trial was delayed Monday for a juror COVID scare — and Tuesday is the New Hampshire primary. If the trial isn't delayed another day, as Trump's lawyers requested, he may lose his chance to take the stand. Well, that's the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary — and Trump made clear through his defense team Monday that he plans on being there. Now, that chain of events — a sick juror, and the New Hampshire primary — may well conspire to keep Trump off the witness stand entirely. With only about 48 hours left to campaign in the New Hampshire primary, Nikki Haley finally got the two-person race she wanted. For months, it has been an article of faith among Ms. Haley’s supporters and a coalition of anti-Trump Republicans that the only way to defeat Donald J. Trump was to winnow the field to a one-on-one contest and consolidate support among his opponents. That wishcasting became reality on Sunday afternoon, when Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida ended his White House bid. And yet, as the race reached the final day, there was little sign that Mr. DeSantis’s departure would transform Ms. Haley’s chances of winning.

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley takes the stage at a Get Out the Vote campaign rally ahead of the New Hampshire primary election in Exeter, New Hampshire, U.S., January 21, 2024. FRANKLIN, N.H. — Nikki Haley is throwing harder punches, hosting more events and appearing alongside the popular Republican governor, John Sununu. But with just hours left before 2024's first Republican presidential primary, Haley is falling behind on a crucial metric: enthusiasm. But that did not extend as far as voting for Haley in the Republican primary, said Bonnie, who declined to give her last name.

The New Hampshire attorney general's office on Monday said it was investigating reports of an apparent robocall that used artificial intelligence to mimic President Joe Biden's voice and discourage voters in the state from coming to the polls during Tuesday's primary election. Attorney General John Formella said the recorded message, which was sent to multiple voters on Sunday, appears to be an illegal attempt to disrupt and suppress voting. “Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday.”It is not true that voting in Tuesday's primary precludes voters from casting a ballot in November's general election. The attorney general's office said anyone who has received the call should email the state Justice Department's election law unit. “Any effort to discourage voters is disgraceful and an unacceptable affront to democracy,” Dolan said in a statement.

Let’s be blunt about the stakes of the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday. If Donald J. Trump wins decisively, as the polls suggest, he will be on track to win the Republican nomination without a serious contest. Ron DeSantis’s decision to suspend his campaign and endorse Mr. Trump is only the latest example. The polling by state isn’t much better for Nikki Haley, the only remaining opponent for Mr. Trump. He leads Ms. Haley by at least 30 points in all of the states after New Hampshire until Super Tuesday.

Ron DeSantis was the conservative policy wunderkind considered the GOP's solution for reuniting the Republican Party in a post-Trump world. The announcement came just two days before the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire , with DeSantis polling in the single digits in the Granite State. Yet, like all of Trump’s other presidential primary challengers, DeSantis had difficulty escaping Trump’s penumbra and failed to dent the support of his MAGA movement. He consistently polled some 40% to 50% behind Trump among likely Republican primary voters, despite his campaign and supporting political action committees raising more than $100 million to break through. Indeed, DeSantis placed a distant second in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15, nabbing just 21% of the votes compared with 51% for Trump.

If you want to understand the New Hampshire primary, stand at the corner of West Broadway and Valley Street in Derry, N.H. There are two huge yard signs — one for Nikki Haley and one for Donald Trump — on adjacent houses. Not exactly: When my colleague Michael Bender headed there recently, neighbors told him that the pro-Haley house had been vacant for years, and that political campaigns often planted their signs there. The race looks like a real contest, with yard signs and all the usual campaign events. Yet when you dig a little deeper, there’s far less going on than it may seem.

But she must still prove she can make a head-to-head duel with the ex-president last through Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary and beyond, after Florida Gov. But Haley faces an existential question for her own campaign Tuesday. “They’re all all coming with us,” Trump noted with satisfaction at a rally in Rochester, New Hampshire, on Sunday night. An unexpectedly high turnout of undeclared voters powered late Arizona Sen. John McCain to a shock victory in the 2000 GOP primary against George W. Bush. But Haley’s problem is that most Republican voters may not want what she’s offering.

And DeSantis himself is no longer around as a political deflector shield as Haley heads into Tuesday’s crucial New Hampshire primary. A CNN poll released Sunday, before DeSantis withdrew from the race, found he was the first choice of 6% of likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters. Another 3% of likely GOP primary voters said they’d vote for someone else. To them, DeSantis dropping out (and quickly endorsing Trump) wouldn’t make Haley look like the safer bet, but Trump. Previewing a central reelection argument in a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden, Harris said the likely Republican nominee relishes his role in new, restrictive abortion laws that have emerged in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling. Still, Biden and Harris have acknowledged that fully restoring the protections included in Roe will be impossible without congressional action. “President Joe Biden has been very clear, when Congress puts the protections of Roe back into the law, he will sign it,” Harris told Coates in Wisconsin. “Similarly, President Joe Biden has been very clear if these extremists achieve their other goal, which is to have a national ban, which means state by state by state.
