Philadelphia has Eagle eye on Super Bowl

PHOENIX, Feb 10 (Reuters) - The Eagles will bring Philly's fighting spirit to Super Bowl 57 as their fans fly in droves to watch Jalen Hurts and the NFC champions take on Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Defensive end Brandon Graham and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, holdovers from the Eagles' successful Super Bowl campaign five years ago, add to the veteran credentials of a group the New York Post has dubbed the "Birds of Prey". And, you know, hit the ground rolling, we hit the ground rolling. 'DIEHARD FANS'The title game will be the ultimate test for 41-year-old head coach Nick Sirianni, at the helm for a Super Bowl for the first time. Hurts' breakout season saw him rack up 3,701 passing yards after getting the Eagles off to an impressive 8-0 start to the season.
PHOENIX, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Patrick Mahomes will look to pull one more rabbit out of his hat on Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl 57. Mahomes overcame a high-ankle sprain in the divisional round to get the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl in four years, producing a heroic late-game sprint to help clinch the AFC Championship. Mahomes has helped his favorite target Travis Kelce become one of the greatest tight ends ever to play the game. Kelce is keen to banish memories of their last Super Bowl appearance two years ago, when Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccanneers humiliated them 31-9. "The last taste I had in my mouth of the Super Bowl, it wasn't too good," said Kelce, who will make history at State Farm Stadium with his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, as the first siblings to play each other in a Super Bowl.
A record 50 million Americans are expected to bet on the Super Bowl. Over 50 million Americans — or roughly one in five US adults — are projected to place a bet on the Super Bowl, per an American Gaming Association survey conducted last week of over 2,100 Americans. If you've ever participated in a Super Bowl squares contest, you might not have thought of it as gambling, but the AGA counted these people among the bettors. For the first time, however, the AGA said it's projecting the number of traditional Super Bowl bettors — through online or retail sportsbooks — to exceed the number who bet casually with friends or through a squares contest. That's 30 million projected traditional bettors to 28 million casual, with some people expected to participate in both formats.

PHOENIX—Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles aren’t exactly known for their restraint, and the only thing that stopped them from rioting when the team used a second-round pick on a quarterback named Jalen Hurts in 2020 may have been that it happened during the early pandemic lockdowns. When more than 12,000 fans graded Hurts’s selection in an online poll for an Eagles fan blog, 61% gave it a big fat F. The second most popular grade: D. Social media declared that the Eagles were clueless because they already had what was touted as a franchise quarterback, and using a prized pick on someone who looked like a backup was an utter waste.
If you live in one of the 36 states (or the District of Columbia) where betting on games is legal and underway, you’ve probably seen many ads for online sports books. (That’s thanks, in part, to the N.F.L. itself, which has had a tricky relationship with sports betting.) You can also set up a box pool — also known as squares — and then rue the money you flushed away by drawing a 2 and a 2. If you want to know just how lousy your chances are on winning at squares, here’s a site that looks at the probability of each number combination coming up (0 and 7 is your best spot, at about 3.5 percent — have fun with all that).
Familiar foe: No walk down Sentimental Street for Andy Reid

February 8 - Andy Reid will stare across the field against familiar uniforms on Sunday but he isn't going to set aside time to be sentimental. Reid is attempting to shoo away references to Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Ariz., as the "Reid Bowl." Those Eagles Reid is referring to are center Jason Kelce, right tackle Lane Johnson, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and defensive end Brandon Graham. Philadelphia then lost 24-21 to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. During the 2008 season, Reid's Eagles reached the NFC title contest but lost to the Arizona Cardinals.

REUTERS/Caitlin O'HaraPHOENIX, Feb 7 (Reuters) - A near-historic Philadelphia Eagles pass rush will face the ultimate test on Sunday in Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, an MVP favourite with no interest in ceding the Super Bowl spotlight. "I don't know if you can contain him - I just don't know, he's that good. He's so mentally tough," head coach Andy Reid told reporters at the Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday. Cornerback James Bradberry said that it would take everything in the Eagles arsenal to stop Mahomes from collecting his second Super Bowl ring.
After the Philadelphia Eagles advanced to this year's Super Bowl, head coach Nick Sirianni set a simple goal for his players over their next two weeks of practices — be a little bit better today than you were yesterday. "Our job is to get a little better each day, to climb," Sirianni said. "We don't need to think about getting way down the road here, but how do we get a little better today?" For Sirianni, who's in his second season as the Eagles' head coach, that's the key to achieving success. Small-scale focus adds up: Experts recommend breaking down ambitious goals — like winning the Super Bowl — into smaller, achievable tasks that can be sustained over a longer period of time.
Tom Brady Retires: The Revised Edition

Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is retiring from football. His seven Super Bowl titles are more than any single organization has won. He was twice foiled in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants. Brady racked up yardage but Tampa Bay fired its offensive coordinator, Byron Leftwich. Look again, though, at the piercing final play from that game: A 30-yard Rams field goal, the ball snapped from the Tampa Bay 12-yard line.
Feb 1 (Reuters) - Rookie offensive lineman Josh Sills of the Super Bowl-bound Philadelphia Eagles has been indicted on rape and kidnapping charges, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced on Wednesday. The 25-year-old Sills was indicted by a Guernsey County Common Pleas Court grand jury on one count of rape and one count of kidnapping, both first-degree felonies. The crime was immediately reported, and the Guernsey County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation. The Eagles did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the team or Sills. Sills has been issued a summons to appear in Guernsey County Common Pleas Court on Feb. 16, four days after the Eagles are scheduled to face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

He was ordered to appear in court Feb. 16, which would be four days after the Eagles play the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Sills played in just one game this season, getting into the Oct. 9 Eagles win against the Arizona Cardinals. The Philadelphia Eagles said in a statement Wednesday they were monitoring the case. Sills, a native of Sarahsville, Ohio, played collegiately at West Virginia and Oklahoma State before joining the Eagles as an undrafted free agent.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Patrick Mahomes didn’t expect to run on the play that would send the Kansas City Chiefs to the Super Bowl. “At some points in games, you’ve got to just put it all on the line,” he said afterward.
Now, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will be the first Black QBs to face off in a Super Bowl. Hurts aims to become the fourth Black QB to win the Super Bowl, joining Williams, Mahomes and Russell Wilson. Steve McNair, Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Wilson also started in the Super Bowl and lost. “I don’t think we have any cigars, but we’ll be ready to go at the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said, poking fun at Joe Burrow’s penchant for puffing those after big wins. Whether it’s Hurts or Mahomes, it’s another victory for the Black QBs who were overlooked throughout the years.
There are no shortage of storylines: Kansas City coach Andy Reid goes against his old team — which he led to Super Bowl 39 — in a game that’s also the first matchup of Black starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl with Mahomes and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts. This was their fifth straight trip to the AFC title game and will be their third Super Bowl appearance in that span. The Eagles clobbered the Niners 31-7 in the NFC title game earlier Sunday. Philadelphia is back in the Super Bowl five years after beating the New England Patriots 41-33 on Feb. 4, 2018. Now a mostly new generation of Eagles — led by coach Nick Sirianni and Hurts — will come to Arizona to try and win another title.
The Philadelphia Eagles Win the NFC Championship

PHILADELPHIA—The NFC Championship between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers was billed as a meeting of two of the best-built teams in the NFL, football machines that gain yards in a variety of ways and yield them hardly at all. Then the 49ers, after navigating a season in which one quarterback after another went down with injuries, lost the one who had somehow gotten them to the brink of the Super Bowl. The Eagles beat the 49ers 31-7 on the strength of an imposing defense and patient, ground-based offensive attack. They were unquestionably helped along by an injury to San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, the rookie who had risen from being the last player selected in last year’s draft to leading the 49ers’ title run.

It will mark the Chiefs' third Super Bowl appearance in four years after they broke a five-decade drought to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in 2020 and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following year. The Chiefs sacked Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow with less than a minute left before kicker Harrison Butker sent one through the uprights. "They're a great football team," said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Eagles.

"This is something you dream about as a kid," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said in televised remarks. The situation went from bad to worse for San Francisco as Purdy left the game with an elbow injury after a strip sack by Eagles' linebacker Haason Reddick in the 49ers' first possession. "This is a special city," said Hurts, 24, before leading the euphoric crowd at Lincoln Financial Field in singing the Eagles' fight song, "Fly, Eagles Fly".

[1/5] Dec 4, 2022; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) looks to throw during the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. Former MVP Patrick Mahomes, 27, expects to shake off an injury doubt to lead his Chiefs to revenge over the Bengals in their fifth straight conference championship appearance. Last year's overtime heartbreaker saw Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow off to the Super Bowl in only his second season. In the NFC Championship, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is looking to put the cherry on top of his improbable Cinderella story on the road in Philadelphia. The conditions get tougher, it gets a little steeper, gets a little harder to breathe.

MELBOURNE, Australia—The biggest player in this NFC Championship game is a 6-foot-8, 365-pound lineman who grew up playing the wrong sport. Long before he was dwarfing the NFL’s most menacing pass rushers, Jordan Mailata’s real dream was to play professional rugby league in his native Australia. The only problem was that even rugby league thought he was too huge.
