Since his disastrous debate performance last month, Biden has fallen further behind former President Donald Trump — even in states key to Biden's reelection. Last week, Sabato's Crystal Ball moved Michigan from "Lean Democratic" to "Toss Up" and Minnesota from "Likely Democratic" to "Lean Democratic." If accurate, the latest poll numbers would narrow Biden's path to victory, as he is already fighting in the swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Last year, a resale ticket to Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour cost an average of $2,183. I had never considered spending so much on live music before, but the Eras Tour featured songs spanning her entire career. I had been listening to Taylor Swift since I was about 14 years old and leaned on her music as I grew up. A few months later, Taylor Swift, now officially a billionaire, announced a European leg of her 2024 tour. For less money than Taylor Swift tickets were re-selling for in the U.S., I was able to eat tapas in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and dine on sugar-dusted crepes with a view of the Eiffel Tower.

On July 14, 1789 (exactly 235 years ago this Sunday), some idealistic Parisians stormed a not especially crowded prison. They set in train a three-pronged revolution: for individual liberty, for civil equality, and, last and rarest, for communal obligation. In the National Assembly of 1789 and the National Assembly of 2024, some questions never get a final answer. Guillaume Lethière (1760—1832) was a Neoclassical painter of mixed race who has never, until now, been the subject of a solo museum show. Born in the French Caribbean, almost certainly into slavery, he reached the summits of artistic achievement in Paris and Rome.

As a way to dissociate from political news, I’ve spent the past week mainlining stories about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders; it started when I binged the new Netflix docuseries “America’s Sweethearts,” which follows the women trying out and training for the 2023-2024 squad. I’m a New York Jew who got kicked out of ballet class when I was 4 because I lacked any discernible talent or interest. So I didn’t expect to fall in love with a show that is so steeped in Southern and dance culture. Because the newbies are competing for positions against veterans, the acceptance rate in any given year can be comparable to that of an Ivy League school. The seven episodes of the Netflix series weren’t enough for me.

CNN —Microsoft has ditched the board observer seat at OpenAI that has drawn regulatory scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic, saying it was not necessary after the AI start-up’s governance had improved significantly in the past eight months. Microsoft took a non-voting, observer position on OpenAI’s board in November last year after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took back the reins of the company, which operates the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT. The seat meant it could attend OpenAI’s board meetings and access confidential information but had no voting rights on matters including electing or choosing directors. The observer seat and Microsoft’s more than $10 billion investment in OpenAI have triggered unease among antitrust watchdogs in Europe, Britain and the US over how much control it exerts over OpenAI. Microsoft cited OpenAI’s new partnerships, innovation and growing customer base since Altman’s return to the startup for giving up its observer seat.

When Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm last week, it broke records and left a trail of damage across the Caribbean. The first named hurricane of the season, Beryl is the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, and also the first Category 4 hurricane to form in the Atlantic in the month of June — a portent of what experts say is a hurricane season that will be much more intense than usual. Hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with most storms developing between mid-August and mid-October. If you’re planning to travel during this hurricane season, here’s what you should know. How bad will hurricane season be this year?

Modi, who leads the world’s biggest democracy, has propped Putin up by making India one of a few loyal customers of Russian oil and gas throughout the two-year war in Ukraine. For all the controversies over nuclear power, it’s a zero-carbon form of energy when generated and it’s fast becoming part of many countries’ answer to the climate crisis. “Clearly the Kremlin has decided that would be a good idea, and some countries are keen to expand their own nuclear power production. It changed its tune in May, when it banned Russian uranium imports, and is on a quest to rapidly develop its own industry to produce HALEU to fuel its own next-generation reactors. It can only benefit India being part of closer collaboration in the Arctic.”She added that India was also benefiting from processing Russian crude oil.

Lifeguard Sebastian Gonzales watches over people at the beach as tides rise and clouds loom overhead just before hurricane Beryl is expected to make landfall on Sunday, July 7, 2024 in Galveston. "Life-threatening storm surge, heavy rainfall, and strong winds are ongoing across portions of Texas," the hurricane center said. A hurricane warning is in effect for the Texas coast from Mesquite Bay north to Port Bolivar, the center said. People on the Texas coast boarded up windows and left beach towns under evacuation order. Along the Texas coast, many residents and business owners took the typical storm precautions but also expressed uncertainty about the storm's intensity.

CNN —Restoring power to millions of Texans slammed by the deadly and destructive storm Beryl could take days or even weeks, posing a dangerous scenario for residents who will not have air conditioning as sweltering heat settles over the state. Beryl slammed into southern Texas as a Category 1 hurricane Monday, knocking out power to more than 2.5 million homes and leaving at least 8 people dead in Texas and Louisiana. As it hurtles northeastward, it is bringing flooding and the threat of tornadoes across eastern Texas, western Louisiana and Arkansas. “The lack of proper cooling combined with many people outdoors cleaning up after Beryl could produce dangerous heat conditions,” the National Weather Service in Houston said. Despite weakening, Beryl will still produce flooding and tornadoes in the US as it moves inland through mid-week.

Olive Rowe states, "everything is gone, everything is gone," as she stands in her home that was destroyed when Hurricane Beryl passed through the area on July 05, 2024 in Saint Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica. Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Mexico after passing through Caribbean islands, including Jamaica. Other parts were under tropical storm warnings. "We're expecting the storm to make landfall somewhere on the Texas coast sometime Monday, if the current forecast is correct," said Jack Beven, a senior hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. It then battered Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane, toppling trees but causing no injuries or deaths before weakening to a tropical storm as it moved across the Yucatan Peninsula.

As Tropical Storm Beryl makes its way up the Gulf of Mexico, Texas is bracing itself for the storm to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on its coast, with several counties issuing evacuation notices and over a million residents under a hurricane warning early Sunday morning. After making landfall in Mexico, Beryl weakened to a tropical storm. But it is expected to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall again on Texas’ shores on Monday morning. The center predicts that tropical storm conditions will begin Sunday night, with hurricane conditions possible by early Monday. Forecasters say the storm could dump five to 10 inches of rainfall across portions of the Gulf Coast and eastern Texas; some areas could get as much as 15 inches.

Beryl hit Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday, then weakened to a tropical storm. The hurricane center forecasts it will hit as a strong Category 1 storm, but wrote "this could be conservative if Beryl stays over water longer" than expected. "People in southern Texas now need to really keep an eye on the progress of Beryl," Beven said. Beryl set the record for the earliest Category 4 with winds of at least 130 mph (209 kilometers per hour) — the first-ever category 4 in June.

After 14 years in the shadows, Britain’s Labour Party has returned to governing. And the country’s first female chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, is faced with the tough job of restoring Britain’s economic growth prospects and ending a decade and a half of stagnation. For inspiration, she has turned to another glass-ceiling-shattering woman, on the other side of the Atlantic: the U.S. Treasury secretary, Janet L. Yellen. Ms. Reeves was named chancellor on Friday after the Labour Party won a majority in Thursday’s general election. Ms. Yellen’s “modern supply-side economics” aims to bolster economic growth by increasing the number of workers and raising productivity while reducing inequality.
