Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz conceded Tuesday night that he “misspoke” in the past when he claimed that he was in Hong Kong during the crackdown in Tiananmen Square in which China’s military attacked and killed pro-democracy demonstrators. The Minnesota governor said that he had been in Hong Kong during the summer of the Tiananmen Square protests, but not in June 1989, when the crackdown took place in and around the square in Beijing, the Chinese capital. The admission comes after news accounts contradicted Walz’s past contention that he was in Hong Kong as the deadly protests unfolded. Walz’s false claim that he was in Hong Kong during an epochal event in world history creates a vulnerability that Republicans will surely look to exploit. Walz first went to China after graduating from college in 1989, stopping first in what was then the British colony of Hong Kong.

I'm a teacher myself, and the possibility of my son failing an entire grade felt like a failure on my part. I'm simply asking my son why he's getting these grades and what he might do to raise them. While getting good grades is a reward for working hard, getting poor grades should also serve as a reflection opportunity on what you could have done differently.

The Quartz Corp facility near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, is seen during a CNN flyover of the area on Monday, September 30. And while quartz is abundant around the world, the kind of ultra-high-purity quartz mined in Spruce Pine is not. The Spruce Pine mines provide an estimated 80% to 90% of the world’s high-purity quartz — experts say the exact amount is proprietary and unknown — supplying semiconductor manufacturers like chipmaking giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Tim Walz took the stage in their first and only debate on Tuesday. Tim Walz in the pair's only debate of their vice presidential campaigns. AdvertisementAccording to polling, Vance has become one of the least-liked vice presidential candidates in history. The vice presidential debate is likely the last major debate of the campaign, as the presidential nominees haven't agreed to a second appearance after their September 10 face-off. "Vance's casual use of 'Tim' when addressing Walz subtly diminished Walz's authority, creating an impression of informality that worked in Vance's favor," Bui said.

Vice presidential nominees traditionally play the role of attack dog for the top of their tickets – in this case, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. Walz earned the Democratic vice presidential nod in part because of his branding of the GOP ticket as “weird” in television interviews that served as semi-auditions for the role. Vance and Trump, meanwhile, have at times struggled to get on the same page on the issue of abortion. Walz could play the part Biden once did in a debate against another rising young conservative, when the then-vice president stymied Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan in a crucial 2012 debate. When Trump brought up Springfield during the presidential debate last month, the moderators fact-checked him in real-time.
