But the figure of former President Jacob Zuma and his new political party uMkhonto – or simply “MK” – provoked more reaction. Jerome Delay/APMoreover, according to Herman, pro-Zuma conspiracy theories and propaganda, some with Russian fingerprints, had been flooding South African social media in the lead-up to the election. And even as Zuma takes pages from Trump’s playbook, South Africans may be telling a different narrative. Facing pressure, Zuma resigned as South African president in 2018. If Trump rants and vents his 2020 election lies on Thursday, he will play into Biden’s hands. That could avoid the mayhem of the first Trump v. Biden debate in 2020. Jamaal Bowman was roundly defeated in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th congressional district on Tuesday, making him the first member of the progressive "Squad" to lose reelection. AIPAC spent over $17 million on Bowman's primary. On the ground, AIPAC's offensive translated into TV ads attacking Bowman and praising Latimer, as well as a deluge of mailers at residents' doors. Congressman Jamaal Bowman won both primaries, upsetting former Congressman Eliot Engel in 2020, and beating two Westchester County legislators in 2022. CNN —An Italian animation company has agreed to pay the US Treasury Department $538,000 for “apparent violations” of US sanctions against North Korea by doing business with a North Korean state-owned animation studio, the department said Wednesday. The outsourcing contract made explicit reference to North Korea, the department said. Mondo’s use of the US financial system to send money to North Korea triggered the Treasury investigation and the threat of fines. Along with Russia, North Korea is among the most heavily sanctioned governments in the world. But the North Korean animation industry has provided an important source of revenue for Pyongyang, according to experts.

In American politics, there is a difference between being old and seeming old — especially when appearing on TV. On TV, he looks ready to burst through your screen — which I find unsettling, but his fans really seem to enjoy. Then there’s Joe Biden, whose urgent challenge in the high-stakes presidential debate on Thursday is precisely this: how to be old on TV without seeming old — or worse, elderly. Mr. Biden is an effective president, but most people don’t watch how someone looks, sounds and moves on TV and think purely about his policy record. Coming across like an old friend, an old hand or even a grumpy old man can have plenty of upside, conveying warmth, experience, humor or a self-deprecating touch.
