With minor exceptions, the major categories were filled in the expected ways when the 2023 Primetime Emmys nominations were announced on Wednesday. Some surprises cropped up further down the page, where the members of the Television Academy apparently started checking off every name they saw from favored shows like “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus.”Snub: Taylor SheridanHe may be the most successful maker of television currently working, but Sheridan gets no respect at the Emmys. But it was a mild shock to see a second Disney+ “Star Wars” show (along with “Andor”) break through in the limited-series category. Ewan McGregor, who reprised his Obi-Wan role from the prequel films, apparently draws a lot of good will. The merger of TV comedy into satirical drama is just about complete.

But in this stew of adulterated meanings, “white nationalist” gets conflated with being a white patriot and allows any suggestion of racism to become an aspersion cast at white nationalists without cause. They did this for this reason.’ But to say it was inherent because of their skin is where I say that is critical race theory. You’re saying that race defines a person.”Be clear: White racists attacked and destroyed the Black community in Tulsa called the Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street. I guess Walters’s argument, as flimsy as it is, hangs on the word “inherent.” And no, white people are not inherently terrorists or racists. But, there have been white people who were terrorists and racists and wreaked havoc and destruction in this country.

It’s Gen X’s moment, that generation most known for being crowded out of sweeping cultural age analyses by millennials on one end and boomers on the other. Or as Patton Oswalt, a Gen X comedian, put it: “Gen X is trending, which probably means that, uh … eh, whatever. People are far more complicated than the year they were born — in Gen X’s case, some time between 1965 and 1980. Take Darby Equipment, a manufacturing company in Tulsa, where remote flexibility for years seemed like an alien concept. The former chief executive, Bob Darby, reigned the company, a family business, with a commitment to an in-person regimen.

Half of wedding vendors say higher costs of goods, from food to flowers to gas, are driving them to increase their service prices. A growing share of couples are adding cash funds to their wedding registries — some even earmarked specifically to help pay for the wedding itself. But with their surprise wedding winnings, Moore estimates their wedding day will be valued at more than $16,500. Usually, couples who win the free services are asked to promote the businesses on social media, or to appear in their marketing materials online and elsewhere. A Reuters journalist explores his ancestors’ ties to slavery

It took me a few minutes of research to figure out why I was losing track of the descendants of the people George Julian enslaved. If the racial cleansing of Forsyth County was mentioned, I didn’t notice. Still hopeful that I might be able to somehow identify and locate living descendants of the people my family enslaved, I flew to Georgia last November. Her father was also a butler for a wealthy white family, her mother a cook. In 1860, Osby’s ancestors were enslaved and working the fields of Forsyth County.

Then the war came, and according to the family history, Union soldiers plundered Sessions’ 27-room house. Heat Wave Baking Texas Extends to the Southeast
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( David Montgomery | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A scorching early-summer heat wave that has baked much of Texas and Oklahoma for the past week was spreading across the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, with dangerous heat forecasts reaching all the way to the Florida Keys. In Austin, Texas, where the heat index climbed to 118 degrees Fahrenheit last week — the highest on record in the city — officials were preparing for daily high temperatures to remain above 100 “for the foreseeable future,” said Kevin Snipes, the city’s emergency management director. Ambulance calls and emergency-room visits for heat exhaustion have risen in Austin and other cities, including Tulsa, Okla., where electricity was out for tens of thousands of people for several days last week after heavy storms that were followed by triple-digit heat. The high temperatures have already proven fatal for some. A teenage boy from Florida and his stepfather, who were hiking in Big Bend National Park in southern Texas on Friday, died as temperatures there rose to 119 degrees Fahrenheit — the second-highest mark ever recorded in the state.

The distance hurdle to abortion without Roe v. Wade

Battered by severe storms that killed at least two people and left thousands without electricity, Oklahoma faced more relentless heat and severe storms on Wednesday as crews worked furiously to restore power in the hard-hit northeast part of the state. Ambulance crews in the Tulsa region were struggling to keep up with calls related to the storm and power disruptions, according to Adam Paluka, a spokesman for the Emergency Medical Services Authority in Tulsa. Many of the calls were related to heat exhaustion or to people falling ill because they had no power for medical equipment in their homes. Storms, possibly with hail, were expected to continue battering Tulsa and others parts of the state on Wednesday and the next few days. But officials were more worried about the relentless heat, which is expected to reach triple digits by the weekend.

Johnson leads LIV charge at U.S. Open, two back of leaders

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - LIV Golf players have made their presence felt at the majors this year and on Thursday it was Dustin Johnson who led the charge with a solid start to the U.S. Open. Two months ago at the Masters, three LIV members finished in the top six, including joint runners-up Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. "The game has been trending in the right direction, and obviously I feel really comfortable over the golf ball rightnow," said Johnson, who won the LIV Golf event in Tulsa last month. There are 15 LIV Golf members in the 156-player U.S. Open field, down from the 18 who teed it up at Augusta National Golf Club and the 16 who played at Oak Hill. But the U.S. Open marks the first major since the bombshell announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which controls LIV Golf.

Henriette Borgund knows attackers can find weaknesses in the defences of a big renewables power company - she's found them herself. She joined Norway's Hydro (NHY.OL) as an "ethical hacker" last April, bringing years of experience in military cyberdefence to bear at a time of war in Europe and chaos in energy markets. They're nervously monitoring a hybrid war where physical energy infrastructure has already been targeted, from the Nord Stream gas pipelines to the Kakhovka dam. It said Russia had tried to destroy digital networks and cause power cuts, and that missile attacks on facilities were often accompanied by cyberattacks. At the North Carolina State GOP Convention on Saturday, on his first campaign swing since news of the federal indictment, Trump escalated his assault on America’s system of justice. They’re trying to win the classified documents case in a court of public opinion – in a way that may influence a future jury – long before the ex-president faces a trial. Oklahoma approved what would be the nation’s first religious charter school on Monday, handing a victory to Christian conservatives but opening the door to a constitutional battle over whether taxpayer dollars can directly fund religious schools. The online school, St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, is to be run by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and the Diocese of Tulsa, with religious teachings embedded in the curriculum. But as a charter school — a type of public school that is independently managed — it would be funded by taxpayer dollars. After a nearly three-hour meeting, and despite concerns raised by its legal counsel, the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board approved the school in a 3-to-2 vote, including a yes vote from a member who was appointed on Friday.
