Eventually he found a ride, but he and the driver were terrified while driving from central Gaza on the enclave’s empty streets. Family members of those who could evacuate were sometimes barred from leaving, because they did not have foreign citizenship or the necessary documents, forcing people into difficult decisions. “We just want one thing: Help us to leave Gaza,” Ms. Abu Middain said. Mkhaimar Abu Sada, 58, an associate professor of political science at Al-Azhar University in Gaza, was accompanying his two sons, both in their 20s, at the Rafah crossing on Thursday. He said they had American citizenship, but that he was not allowed to leave because he has only an American green card.

Pakistan's Fakhar has no regrets over missed hundred

Fakhar led Pakistan's chase with a freewheeling 81, which earned him player-of-the-match award, but fell short of a hundred trying to wrap up their chase early. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands can also join them in a mid-table logjam should both win their next games. Fakhar said the mood was upbeat in the dressing room despite the uncertainty around the 1992 champions making the last four in the showpiece 50-overs tournament. "In the World Cup, each win gives you confidence and we were waiting for this win. "We are in the ifs-and-buts (zone) right now - but we will try to win both the remaining matches with good run rates.

LUCKNOW, India, Oct 28 (Reuters) - England's World Cup title defence may be in tatters after four defeats in five matches but assistant coach Marcus Trescothick said on Saturday their sagging fortunes won't stop them from relishing their blockbuster clash with hosts India. England won the title on home soil in 2019 and came into the showpiece as favourites after also capturing the Twenty20 World Cup last year, but defeats by New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka have left them on the brink of elimination. "Playing against India in a World Cup in their own country is a special part of the game. You get these opportunities that come around - you know there'll be a big crowd, there'll be a wonderful occasion," Trescothick told reporters. Trescothick said England had not lost faith in the 50-overs format having lifted the title at the last World Cup.

The only team below them is the Netherlands, the sole non-test playing nation at the 10-team World Cup. Mott did not want to say if it was the end of an era for their ODI team but he admitted it was a missed opportunity after winning the T20 World Cup last year. "For us, every time you play a World Cup you know it could be your last ... they don't come along very often," Mott added. "In the last 12 to 18 months we've done well in the T20 World Cup and we've bombed out here. "A T20 World Cup is the next thing on the agenda (in June 2024), from an ICC events point of view.

"We're a really good team, done a lot of good things in the recent past in white-ball cricket and 50-over cricket," Buttler told reporters. "I think you're always questioning as captain how you can get the best out of players, how you can get the team moving in the right direction," Buttler said. England face the daunting task of playing unbeaten hosts India on Sunday and Buttler said they were determined to get back to playing good cricket. "It looks like it could need a few miracles that we'd have to win every game and things go our way to progress further in this tournament," Buttler said. Oct 26 (Reuters) - Pakistan have underperformed at the World Cup having lost three matches in a row but they are eyeing a winning streak starting with their group match against South Africa, all-rounder Shadab Khan said on Thursday. Pakistan began the tournament with wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka before losing to India, Australia and Afghanistan. We know that we are not playing good cricket," Shadab told reporters ahead of Friday's game against second-placed South Africa in Chennai. Our team was playing well before the World Cup. Pakistan also have a negative run rate to contend with as they fight for a top-four spot and Shadab said the clash against South Africa is the first of many "do-or-die matches".

BENGALURU, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana praised all-rounder Angelo Mathews for adding discipline to their bowling attack after the veteran claimed two wickets in miserly spells during Thursday's thumping victory over defending world champions England. Theekshana credited Mathews and player of the match Lahiru Kumara (3-35) for getting them back on track after England made a good start with 59 runs in the first 10 powerplay overs on a dry wicket in Bengaluru. "In the initial four or five overs, we conceded a few runs due to our inability to find the right length," Theekshana told reporters. So, we had a chance to take wickets, that's what we planned here." "I think they underestimated our team, because we also lost three games and we only won against the Netherlands," he said.

BENGALURU, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka restricted England to a below-par 156 all out in 33.2 overs in a must-win clash between the World Cup's stragglers on Thursday, with only Ben Stokes offering some resistance in a dismal batting display by the defending champions. Stokes (43) took the attack to Sri Lanka on a dry wicket at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after England's middle-order collapsed in the face of some incisive bowling, but he holed out to Dushan Hemantha in the deep off Lahiru Kumara (3-35) in the 31st over. Sri Lanka earlier put the brakes on England's scoring as returning veteran Angelo Mathews (2-14) removed opener Dawid Malan (28) and helped run out Joe Root, before Kumara struck twice to leave the holders in trouble at 85-5. Sri Lanka, who came into the contest with the same record as England with three defeats in four matches, ran through the tail to lay the platform for a big upset. "I think it goes without saying you obviously do need wickets in hand but we haven't spoken about a blueprint as a (batting) unit," Markram told reporters. "No definitive roles given, but everyone kind of knows what they need to do to help this batting unit peak at their best. South Africa have batted first in four of their five matches and won them all. On the one occasion they had to chase, it went horribly wrong in a shock 38-run loss to the Netherlands. "I think it's quite easy to get that mantra of ‘they're a bat-first team’," Markram says.

The all-rounder produced a blistering 106 off 44 balls and opener David Warner made 104 as Australia racked up 399-8 after electing to bat. The Netherlands began with spin from both ends and Warner smashed Aryan Dutt for four fours in a row to signal his intention early. The Dutch bowlers briefly stemmed the run flow but the ground had been laid for Maxwell to explode with the bat. With Maxwell playing some outrageous shots on either side of the wicket, Australia plundered 131 runs in the final 10 overs. IMF seeks strong budget, narrower deficit from Sri Lanka

NEW DELHI, Oct 20 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is looking for a strong budget and narrower deficit from Sri Lanka as it seeks funding to bridge the gap between government revenue and expenditure, the IMF mission chief for the country said on Friday. But the country has struggled to increase public revenue, with the IMF projecting a 15% shortfall this year. An improved performance for next year is necessary for Sri Lanka to get past the first review of its programme with the global lender. Sri Lanka reached a staff level agreement with the IMF late on Thursday to release the second tranche of about $330 million but still needs approval from the IMF management and Executive Board. Sri Lanka typically uses borrowings from state banks, taxes and government securities to fund its budget.

"Even if the fighting spreads beyond Israel and the Palestinian territories, it is unlikely to result in a prolonged oil price spike" they predicted. "There are tangible signs that high oil prices amplified by surging borrowing costs and depreciating EM currencies began to erode fuel consumption." In addition, oil prices rarely experienced long-term turmoil during most of Israel's past conflicts, JPMorgan said. "Eventually, oil prices tended to gradually stabilize and decline, resulting in Brent actually trading at a discount to its fundamentally-derived fair value.
