London CNN —In late September, as Israel’s nearly year-long war widened and its credit rating was downgraded yet again, the country’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said that, while Israel’s economy was under strain, it was resilient. Israel’s economy could shrink even more than that, based on a worst-case estimate by the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University. Before the October 7 attack and ensuing Israel-Hamas war, the International Monetary Fund forecast that Israel’s economy would grow by an enviable 3.4% this year. Smotrich, the finance minister, is confident that Israel’s economy will bounce back once the war ends, but economists are concerned the damage will far outlast the conflict. Housing is one of many issues Vance, the Republican nominee, believes are rooted in the arrival of undocumented migrants in America. But many economists caution that connecting rising numbers of immigrants to housing costs is no simple thing. Other economists have noted links between immigrants and increased housing costs. Vance later shared two studies on housing and immigration that showed a link between increased immigration and rising housing costs — though each offered various caveats, including noting that the impact changes over time. Indeed, Zillow data shows a clear upward trend in Springfield rents this year compared with 2023.

JPMorgan says this EV charging stock could surge nearly 80%

JPMorgan thinks EVgo's business model of both owning and operating its fast electric vehicle chargers can send the stock soaring. EVgo stock has climbed roughly 10% in 2024, but it's been a choppy ride higher. Electric vehicle-related stocks have been under pressure for most of the year thanks to dimming consumer demand for EVs. "Unlike hardware-software peers, EVgo's fast charging owner-operator model has been scaling well with higher utilization and charge rates in the current muted EV environment," Peterson said. LSEG data shows that, of the 12 analysts covering the stock, seven have a buy or strong buy rating, while the rest rate it as a hold.

Carlos Tavares, chief executive officer of Stellantis NV, speaks during a news conference at the Fiat automobile manufacturing plant in Kragujevac, Serbia, on Monday, July 22, 2024. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares on Thursday left the door open for possible cuts to its dividend and share buybacks next year and brushed off problems with its U.S. business that led to a major profit warning this week as a "small operational error". "When you are in a context which is brutal and more demanding, if you make a small operational error, well it is immediately visible," he said, adding he was taking it as a "wake up call" and very seriously. While Stellantis is committed to its 2024 dividend, Tavares said it was too early to confirm next year's plan. "The time for 2025 has not come, we will see what will happen at the end of 2024 for a discussion and a decision for 2025," he said.

President Biden said on Tuesday that his administration will be "monitoring for any price gouging activity" that benefits foreign ocean carriers, including those on the USMX board. He also said "foreign ocean carriers have made record profits since the pandemic, when Longshoremen put themselves at risk to keep ports open." UBS forecast that 20% of Maersk's total volume would touch a U.S. port that would be impacted by the strike. Acting Secretary Julie Su lashed out at the idea that labor wage increases would be passed onto U.S. exporters and importers. CNN —The NASA team overseeing the iconic Voyager 2 spacecraft made the decision to power down one of its science instruments in an effort to conserve energy. Despite the aging probe’s emptying power stores, NASA expects that Voyager 2 will keep operating with at least one science instrument into the 2030s. Voyager 2 has three radioisotope thermoelectric generators that power the spacecraft by converting heat emitted by the decaying plutonium into electricity. But turning off a piece of equipment on Voyager 2 or Voyager 1 — an identical spacecraft launched 16 days after its twin — is not ideal, NASA noted. After reaching beyond the heliosphere, or interstellar space, Voyager 2 has “collected limited data in recent years due to its orientation relative to the direction that plasma is flowing,” NASA said.

But the bond market seemed less convinced, with the 30-year government bond yield falling the next day to close to its lowest level since 2005. Angela Weiss | AFP | Getty ImagesAs she unveiled her most detailed economic plan yet this week, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris pledged to fight price gouging in order to rein in voters' grocery costs. Although Harris released more detail Wednesday as part of her 82-page economic plan, it's still unclear what price hikes her administration would see as illegal "price gouging." Generally, Republicans support fewer economic regulations, although Trump has suggested limiting food imports as a way to lower grocery prices. What is price gouging? Thirty-seven U.S. states already have laws that forbid price gouging in emergencies.

Russia would be in a recession by now if it weren't for the nation's hefty war budget, economists told BI. War spending is propping up the economy, which is becoming increasingly overheated, they added. AdvertisementWar may be the only thing keeping Russia's economy afloat. Russia's economy is also being plagued by currency problems, Gorodnichenko said, pointing to Russia's limited access to the dollar as the result of Western sanctions.
