Leading up to my birthday, I asked my mom if she still had all our wedding dresses in the house. On the night we had scheduled, all but one of my sisters and mom drove their minivans to my house with their wedding dresses stuffed into the driver's seat. AdvertisementOnce we arrived at the dinner table, we talked about all our wedding memories. Although our weddings and this "wedding dress dinner" were particularly memorable days together, my mom, sisters, and I make memories every week. Dressing up in our wedding dresses, remembering the best days of our lives, was especially sweet for my mom.

MINNEAPOLIS – Only a week ago, Alicia Sacramone Quinn fretted about the gut-wrenching decision she and her two colleagues would have to make in determining the 2024 Olympic team. Engineers in Japan are trying to get robots to imitate that particularly human expression — the smile. They have created a face mask from human skin cells and attached it to robots with a novel technique that conceals the binding and is flexible enough to turn down into a grimace or up into a squishy smile. The effect is something between Hannibal Lecter’s terrifying mask and the Claymation figure Gumby. But scientists say the prototypes pave the way for more sophisticated robots, with an outward layer both elastic and durable enough to protect the machine while making it appear more human. Beyond expressiveness, the “skin equivalent,” as the researchers call it, which is made from living skin cells in a lab, can scar and burn and also self-heal, according to a study published June 25 in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science.

Somehow, we are supposed to know what to do when our kids start dating. I had three kids in three and a half years, and now that they're all teens, we are in the thick of teen dating. One of the best things you can do is to show interest in learning about the people your teens are dating. Doing this shows your teen how much you love them and helps you get to know the person your teen is dating. There will likely be some disagreements when your teens are dating, but with good communication, you can get to the other side together.

I’m not sure I’d ever watched Donald Trump lie so incessantly, extravagantly and unabashedly, and that’s saying something. He lied about his relationship with the military, about his concern for the environment — about pretty much any and every subject that came up. But President Biden failed to take advantage of it. Biden, 81, came into his face-off with Trump knowing that many voters were concerned about his age and had doubts about his sharpness. And he and they spent much of the past week devoted to preparation, preparation, preparation, pausing occasionally to assure nervous Democrats that Biden had this thing under control.

Renowned psychologists John and Julie Gottman have interviewed 40,000 couples in quest to find out what makes love last. Through their research at The Gottman Institute, they've learned how successful relationships survive conflict and express affection. In an interview with psychotherapist and bestselling author Esther Perel, The Gottmans said one commonality most successful couples had was their ability to do "repairs." One of the Gottman's most concrete finding is that in successful couples, the ratio of positive to negative interactions during a conflict is five to one. And lo and behold: it was the couples who had maintained at least a five-to-one ratio (or more!)

While it might look like the stuff of nightmares, this tiny robot covered in living skin could mark a step forward in the quest to make robots more human-like. It’s the work of researchers in Japan, who say they have discovered a new way to bind living skin tissue to a mechanical robotic surface. Previously, he developed a “living” robot skin — using collagen, a fibrous protein in human skin, and human dermal fibroblasts, the main cell type in connective tissue — that could be applied to a robotic finger and bend without breaking. The new method uses V-shaped holes on the robot's surface to attach the living skin securely. However, ensuring the consistency and quality of the living skin might not be so easy, says Takeuchi.

The workplace drama I'm now highly invested in is from the Mohawk Chevrolet dealership in Ballston Spa, New York. The three-person marketing team in charge of posting on social media would sometimes try to jump on a TikTok trend or some other kind of lighthearted fare. So far, nothing out of the ordinary for a car dealership, this one founded in 1919 with the slogan "We go out of our way to please you." But then, somehow, they made a masterpiece — a mockumentary about the dealership in the style of "The Office." But is a viral video from a local car dealership actually good for sales?

Almost half, 44%, of workers report feeling burned out, according to a 2024 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management. The team said it was able to mimic human skin ligaments by bonding skin tissue to perforated 3D facial models and 2D robots. The team hopes the advancement will be useful "in the cosmetics industry and to help train plastic surgeons," according to a press release. While the development could prove helpful, some people online reacted to the robot's fleshy skin and facial movements with jokes or said they found it disturbing. Scientists reveal a smiling 2D facial robot covered with lab-grown living skin.

In what may seem like a small, everyday exchange, her friend’s reaction was an important indicator for their relationship: She had responded to Caribardi’s “bid for connection,” a term coined by relationship experts at the Gottman Institute in Seattle. Whether the bid is big or small doesn’t matter — what is important is the other person’s response, Schwartz Gottman said. How to recognize a ‘bid for connection’The basis of “bids for connection” stems from the Gottmans’ “Love Lab” research, which started in 1986 and tracked couples for six years. Schwartz Gottman said this test is a good example of the importance of “turning toward” a partner, one of the three responses someone can have to a bid. Schwartz Gottman recommends communicating those feelings directly and honestly to the partner, instead of lashing out with a “turning against” response.
