Read previewThe sheer scale of drone use in Ukraine has given rise to an increasing battle for the skies, and the rise of drone-on-drone dogfights. He described how a small commercial drone out on reconnaissance might notice an enemy drone in the sky, fly above it, and drop down to clip its rotors. Armed Forces of UkraineOne of the simplest attacks is using an FPV drone to crash into an enemy drone, with or without an explosive attached. Ukrainian drone footage shows a Russian drone with an explosive payload hanging from it. Drones can be sent to look for antenna peeking out of windows — "a tell-tale sign of an enemy drone pilot covertly operating," he said.

This week, two asteroids — one big enough to destroy a city, and the other so large it could end civilization — are set to fly near our planet. Both have a zero percent chance of impacting Earth. And, depending on where you are in the world, you may even be able to see one of them. It is a whopping 7,600 feet long, but it will be too far to spot easily without a strong telescope. On Saturday, at 9:46 a.m. Eastern time, it will zip by Earth at 75 percent of the distance to the moon.

The seatbelt light. Pete Syme/Business InsiderKeep your seatbelt onSpeaking of unbuckling seat belts, 47% of respondents said it is acceptable to do so when the seatbelt light is switched off. AdvertisementI think there's a fundamental disconnect between what switching off the seatbelt light means to the flying public and what it actually means. Switching off the light means passengers may now safely get up to use the lavatory or retrieve something from the overhead compartment. Even though aircraft are vacuumed in fairly frequent intervals, their carpets see a lot of passengers between more thorough cleanings.

On board the Russian warship visiting Cuba

CNN —When the sun unleashed an extreme solar storm and hit Mars in May, it engulfed the red planet with auroras and an influx of charged particles and radiation, according to NASA. Solar radiation hits MarsThe most extreme storm occurred on May 20 after an X12 flare released from the sun, according to data collected by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft currently studying the sun. The Curiosity rover, currently exploring Gale Crater just south of the Martian equator, took black-and-white images using its navigation cameras during the solar storm. But Mars lost its magnetic field billions of years ago, which means the planet has no shield from incoming energized solar particles. By tracing the data from multiple Martian missions, scientists were able to watch how the solar storm unfolded.

The rhythms of South Florida’s rainy season used to be somewhat predictable, with hot, humid days leading to midafternoon thunderstorms and then clear skies. Sometimes a downpour would ruin the evening commute; sometimes it would start and end in the few minutes it took to leave your desk and walk to the car. The pounding rain came weeks after the region experienced a stretch of rainless days that were extremely hot, with the heat index last month reaching a record high of 112 degrees. Florida’s sticky, bug-ridden storm season has always been more about endurance than enjoyment, even for those who savor the relative quiet. But staggering from oppressive heat to oppressive rain has robbed residents and businesses of a sense of routine that at least made this time of year a little more manageable.

New pterosaur species discovered by Australian farmer
  + stars: | 2024-06-13 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —An amateur paleontologist has discovered a new species of pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived alongside dinosaurs around 100 million years ago. Kevin Petersen, an avocado farmer and curator of the Kronosaurus Korner fossil museum in northwest Queensland, Australia, unearthed a number of fossilized bones in western Queensland in 2021. Fewer than 25 sets of pterosaur remains belonging to four species have been found in Australia since the 1980s, while more than 100 sets have been found in Brazil and Argentina. In finding Haliskia, Petersen found the most complete specimen of any pterosaur discovered in Australia to this day, Pentland said in the statement, praising Petersen for his “careful preparation” of the remains. “I’m thrilled that my discovery is a new species, as my passion lies in helping shape our modern knowledge of prehistoric species,” he said in the statement.

There is so much more space in LA. Alice JohnstonOne of the first things I noticed when driving to the city from the airport was how it feels like LA has way more space than London. In the UK, it can be hard to forget that you're living on a small island with millions of people. Plus, almost every house I passed here seemed to have its own garden and tons of space inside. Someone in LA told me they never even realized expensive homes sometimes share walls with neighbors, which blew my mind.

Members of the high school graduating class of 1974 in Moore, Okla., had taken their seats in the football stadium under darkening skies. The class president welcomed the crowd. Then the principal, looking out at the clouds, declared all the students graduates and told those in attendance to find shelter immediately. “The sky turned pea green, horrible clouds rolled in, and sirens started going off,” said Nuala Murray South, one of the graduates. The US's first electric vertical-takeoff and -landing aircraft are expected to fly commercial passengers as soon as 2025. Veterans and world leaders gathered in Normandy on Thursday to mark the 80th anniversary of the June 6, 1944 D-Day landings, when more than 150,000 Allied soldiers arrived in France by sea and air to drive out the forces of Nazi Germany. With war raging in Ukraine, on Europe's borders, this year's commemoration of this major turning point in World War Two will carry special resonance. Leaders are set to draw parallels with World War Two and warn of the dangers of isolationism and the far-right. Under glorious blue skies, they were joined by a collection of Second World War jeeps. But Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, touching off Europe's biggest armed conflict since World War Two, was not invited.

D-Day is more than the largest amphibious invasion in history. The US Navy now aims for enough amphibious capacity to land just two Marine brigades on a hostile shore.
