The tenure of Lynne Tracy, U.S. ambassador to Russia, comes at a time when relations between the U.S. and Moscow have rarely been as fraught as they are now. WSJ’s Russia Bureau Chief Ann Simmons talks with Tracy about the challenges. Photo: Valery Sharifulin/TASS via Zuma PressThe moment when ambassadors present their credentials to their hosts is usually a staid affair. When the U.S. ambassador presented herself at the Kremlin in April, Russian President Vladimir Putin railed at Washington during the televised ceremony, accusing it of sparking the war in Ukraine. With Putin set off behind a podium at the other end of the Alexander Hall, there was no way for Lynne Tracy or the other new ambassadors to respond.

Not when he was so ineffective in his return from back surgery that Simmons couldn't even protest much when he was bounced first from his normal position, then eventually from Nets coach Jacque Vaughn's rotation entirely. “It’s hard for a coach to really trust and believe in you when he’s not seeing it, right?” Simmons said. It gives the Nets hope that, no longer with Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving, at least they now have the old Ben Simmons. “Ben Simmons going downhill is a problem,” said Doc Rivers, who coached Simmons in Philadelphia and is now an ESPN analyst. Simmons, used to his game being scrutinized in both his NBA homes, won't say much beyond that he is finally healthy again.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza has the potential for grave consequences, including “absolutely unacceptable” civilian casualties, but said that Israel has the right to defend itself. Speaking at a summit in Kyrgyzstan with other former Soviet republics, the Kremlin leader called on both sides to stop the bloodshed and come to an agreement to stabilize the situation on the ground, Russia’s state news agency TASS said. Putin said that although Israel was subjected to “an attack unprecedented in its cruelty” and has the right to protection, a settlement is only possible through the creation of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem.

Other ingredients in Morton salt substitute include fumaric acid, monocalcium phosphate and silicon dioxide. MRNA NOT AN INGREDIENTThe claim that common salt is being replaced with a “mRNA chemical laced inorganic synthetic salt substitute” is misleading. “In terms of how chemists use the words ‘organic’ and ‘inorganic’, both table salt (sodium chloride) and potassium chloride would be inorganic compounds as they lack carbon atoms." The percentage of Black workers in the auto industry today is more than double their share of the workforce overall. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Hard-won gains disappearSoon after Black auto workers broke into better paying jobs, the US auto industry began its long decline, decimating Black communities in particular.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan judge is expected to decide Friday morning whether to drop charges against two defendants accused of participating in a fake elector scheme after the state attorney general said the group was “brainwashed” into believing former President Donald Trump won the 2020 election. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, however, may have derailed the case by saying during a virtual event last month that the electors "legit believe" Trump won the election. But it's the only state where the accused false electors face criminal charges. At a Sept. 18 virtual event organized by liberal groups, Nessel said the group would never plea guilty because they “genuinely believe” Trump won the election. Henry and several others, including former Michigan GOP co-chair Meshawn Maddock, are scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination hearing on Oct. 12.

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — James Harden skipped the Philadelphia 76ers’ media day and his status for training camp this week in Colorado is unclear because the franchise has yet to meet the disgruntled guard’s demand for a trade. Harden did picked up his $35.6 million contract option this season in June with the expectation the team would try to trade him. When no deal materialized for the seven-time All-NBA player, he blasted Morey at a promotional event in China. Harden’s play last season was a pivotal reason why the Sixers’ championship run stalled. NEW YORK (AP) — Ben Simmons is set to begin training camp next week with no restrictions after two injury-shortened seasons in Brooklyn. If he stays healthy, Simmons may even be able to return to his roots as a point guard. “But the things that I’m asking him to do going forward, I think he can physically do now,” Vaughn said. He played as a forward or backup center last season in Brooklyn, where Kyrie Irving was the point guard when Simmons arrived in a trade for James Harden in February 2022. “I think if Ben is able to play consistently in a certain way, there’s no doubt then that he should have the basketball in his hands,” Vaughn said.
